What this file actually does
MineSweeper.dll is an application library, not a general Windows runtime such as DirectX or the Visual C++ redistributable. The name is associated with more than one historical Minesweeper product, so the correct fix depends on the program that displays the error.
The legacy Windows 7 Minesweeper game used these files together:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMinesweeper
That folder included Minesweeper.exe, Minesweeper.exe.mui, and MineSweeper.dll. Copying only the DLL can still leave the game without its language resources, manifests, or other required files.

Modern Microsoft Minesweeper is a Microsoft Store application published through Xbox Game Studios. It is not the same standalone Windows 7 game, and you should not assume that the current Store app uses the old MineSweeper.dll.
There was also an unrelated historical MSN Messenger web-game ActiveX control with the same filename. It is obsolete and should not be restored or registered merely because its name matches.
No reliable universal file version, size, hash, or 32-bit/64-bit pairing should be assumed for minesweeper.dll. The file must match the product and installation that requests it.

First: identify the Minesweeper edition
Check the launching program
Look at the exact shortcut or executable that produces the error.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- If it launches
Minesweeper.exefromMicrosoft GamesMinesweeper, you have the legacy desktop game. - If it launches from the Start menu and appears under Installed apps, it is probably the Microsoft Store edition.
- If another old program, game collection, or web component names the DLL, repair that owning product instead.
- If the file is inside
Downloaded Program Filesor an old MSN Messenger installation, do not treat it as the Windows 7 game DLL.
Also check when the problem began. A missing file after disk cleanup, antivirus quarantine, copying only part of an old folder, or migrating from Windows 7 points to different repairs than a Store app that stopped launching after an update.
Check the file location
If a copy of minesweeper.dll exists, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect Location, Digital Signatures, and Details.
A legacy game DLL should be beside the executable that loads it, not arbitrarily placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not trust a file solely because its filename is correct. A file from another Windows release, a modified “classic games” package, or an unrelated old ActiveX control can create a different error.

- Close the error and any running copy of Minesweeper.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
text
C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMinesweeper
- Confirm whether
Minesweeper.exeandMinesweeper.exe.muiare present with the DLL. - If files are missing, remove the incomplete copy or move it to a backup folder.
- Restore the complete Minesweeper folder from the same legally obtained Windows installation or original installation media.
- Keep the files together in the application folder.
- Right-click
Minesweeper.exe, select Properties, open Compatibility, and use compatibility settings only if the program still refuses to run on the current Windows release. - Start the game again.
Success means the executable opens without a DLL error and the game interface displays normally. If another file is then reported missing, the copy is still incomplete. Restore the complete game component instead of collecting individual DLLs.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not treat the old Windows 7 game as a current built-in component. If you do not have matching original files, the supported practical route is the modern Microsoft Minesweeper Store app.
Fix 2: repair or reinstall Microsoft Minesweeper
Use this path when the error appears from the current Start menu app rather than an old Minesweeper.exe.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Minesweeper.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch Minesweeper again.
Repair keeps the app’s data where possible. If it does not help, return to the same page and select Reset. Reset can remove the app’s local data, so use it only after Repair fails.
If Reset does not work:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the three-dot menu beside Microsoft Minesweeper.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Search for Microsoft Minesweeper.
- Select the official listing and choose Get or Install.
- Start the app from the Start menu.
If Microsoft Store cannot find or install the app, press Windows key + R, enter:
wsreset.exe
and press Enter. Wait for the Store window to reopen, then search again. Store availability can also depend on region, account, compatibility, or Store cache state.
A clean reinstall is successful when the official app launches without the old standalone DLL error. If the same error is shown by a separate executable, you are repairing the wrong edition.

Use Windows repair commands when the legacy file was part of a Windows component, or when several protected Windows files are failing. These commands do not guarantee that SFC will restore a Windows 7 game copied onto Windows 10 or 11.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run SFC separately:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected system files. Running DISM first gives SFC a healthier source for repairs.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If it says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, review the result in an administrator Command Prompt and use matching Windows installation media or a matching component source. Never substitute a DLL from another Windows release.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can turn troubleshooting into guesswork. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the owning Minesweeper product remains the definitive fix when the application itself is incomplete.

Security software may have removed or isolated a file after an update, cleanup, or false detection.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
minesweeper.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect its original path and detection details.
- Do not restore it automatically.
- Restore a file only if you can confirm that it came from the correct official installation and that its path belongs beside the legitimate program.
- If uncertain, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete application instead.
Restoring a modified or malicious DLL can expose the computer. If the file repeatedly disappears after reinstalling, investigate the detection, update security definitions, and scan the complete system.
Fix 5: rule out a wrong architecture or incompatible file
A 32-bit or 64-bit mismatch can produce errors that look like missing-DLL problems. The file also may be damaged even when it exists.
Check the application rather than guessing from the DLL filename:
- Right-click the program’s executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check the product information available for that executable.
- Compare the file with the matching installation source.
- Replace the complete application package if the files came from different Windows editions or third-party “classic games” bundles.
Do not mix Vista files, Windows 7 files, modified game packs, and current Store packages. A file that loads in one installation is not automatically suitable for another.
If the error says the program is “not designed to run on Windows,” suspect corruption, tampering, incompatibility, or the wrong architecture before assuming that a runtime package is missing.

A display driver normally does not own minesweeper.dll, so updating a graphics driver is not the first repair. It becomes relevant only if the game began failing after a system change or other graphics applications also crash.
To update a driver manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test Minesweeper again.
For a recent driver problem, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if that option is available.

Finding the right driver manually can mean hunting through hardware versions and checking which package actually changed. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies, while installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the Minesweeper application that owns the DLL.
If the failure began immediately after a Windows or installer change and a suitable restore point exists:
- Open Start.
- Search for Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore normally changes system files, settings, and installed programs without changing personal files.
Why downloading the DLL or using regsvr32 is usually wrong
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, a modified file, the wrong architecture, or a file from a different product. Even a clean replacement may not fix missing language files, manifests, dependencies, permissions, or a damaged Store package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNever place an arbitrary file in System32, SysWOW64, or a program directory based only on its name.
regsvr32 is also generally inappropriate for the Windows Minesweeper game DLL. It is an application library, not a documented COM or ActiveX registration target. Registering it will not rebuild a missing desktop game installation. The historical MSN Messenger control was a different ActiveX component, and registering that old file will not repair Windows Minesweeper.
FAQ
Is minesweeper.dll a Windows system DLL?
It is associated primarily with the legacy Windows Minesweeper application, not with a general Windows runtime. Its correct location is beside the program that loads it.
Does Microsoft Minesweeper on Windows 10 or 11 need this file?
Do not assume so. The current Microsoft Minesweeper is a Store app, while the old standalone DLL belonged to the legacy desktop game.
Should I download minesweeper.dll from the internet?
No. Repair or reinstall the complete owning application from its official source or matching original Windows media.
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the DLL exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL. The message does not prove that the named file itself is missing.
Can SFC restore the game?
SFC can repair protected Windows files when the matching component is present in Windows. It is not a guaranteed way to restore a Windows 7 Minesweeper folder copied onto a newer Windows installation.
What if the error returns after a clean reinstall?
Check antivirus protection history, permissions, disk health, malware, and whether the restored files genuinely belong to the same product and Windows installation. A recurring failure usually indicates an underlying installation or system problem, not a need for another random DLL.
