Choose MP4 for a video you need to play or deliver across a wide range of devices and browsers, after checking that the destination supports the codecs inside it. Choose MKV when you want a flexible file that can bundle selectable audio and subtitle tracks, chapters, and metadata. Neither container guarantees compatibility or determines picture quality on its own.
MKV and MP4 are containers, not codecs
A video container packages encoded video and audio tracks, and may carry subtitles and other information. A codec is what encodes or decodes the media itself. That distinction matters: an .mkv or .mp4 extension does not reveal whether a particular player can decode the file’s video and audio streams.
Matroska’s technical introduction describes MKV as a container for multiple audio, video, and subtitle streams, with features such as selectable tracks, chapters, metadata, and seeking. The IETF’s RFC 9559, published in October 2024, specifies Matroska’s tracks, chapters, tags, and streaming modes. MP4 is also a container; the extension alone does not specify the codecs or their profile and level.
MKV vs. MP4 at a glance
| Decision | MKV / Matroska | MP4 |
|---|---|---|
| Best-known use | A flexible bundled media file with selectable tracks and associated features. | A common choice for device, browser, and publishing workflows. |
| Playback compatibility | Depends on the player’s Matroska support and the codecs and features used. | Broadly used, but actual support still depends on the contained codecs, profiles, levels, and target. |
| Multiple audio and subtitle tracks | Supports selectable audio, video, and subtitle streams. | Supports timed text, but subtitle and metadata capabilities differ; check the file and target player. |
| Chapters and metadata | Supports chapters and extensive metadata. | Has chapter-marker constructs, with different representations and metadata provisions. |
| Image quality or file size | The container name does not set quality or size; encoding and settings matter. | Same: MP4 does not inherently improve, reduce, or worsen quality or size. |
Which format works on more devices?
MP4 is often the safer starting point for broad distribution, but it is not a guarantee. A destination must support both the container and the specific video and audio streams within it, including relevant codec profile and level. For browser playback, support varies by browser and platform, so identify the codecs rather than relying on the extension alone.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the documentation for the actual device, app, browser, or upload destination. Confirm its accepted container, video and audio codecs, profile and level, resolution and frame rate, subtitle format, and any features you use, such as HDR. The Microsoft Media Foundation MKV documentation illustrates that Windows playback depends on supported codecs and that particular handling limits apply in that framework. Its notes about captions, attached fonts or images, menus, and chapter-referenced supplemental files should not be generalized to every Windows player.
When MKV is the better choice
Use MKV when the file is meant for an archive or a playback setup that can handle Matroska and you want several media choices together. For example, a game walkthrough archive might keep commentary and clean gameplay as separate selectable audio tracks, include subtitles in more than one language, and preserve chapters and descriptive metadata in one file.

Test the target player if your file depends on styled subtitles, attached fonts, menus, or other specialized features. Support for Matroska does not mean every player will expose or render every track and feature as you expect.
When MP4 is the better choice
Choose MP4 for general-purpose playback or delivery when the destination calls for it or its documentation supports the codecs and settings in your file. MP4 is widely used, but a supported extension is not enough: the destination still has to decode the encoded streams.

For a publishing workflow, follow its current specification rather than assuming a local player’s preferences apply online. For example, Apple’s HLS authoring guidance specifies fragmented MP4 for HEVC and permits fragmented MP4 or MPEG transport streams for H.264 in that context. That is an HLS-specific requirement, not a universal rule for all MP4 files or all streaming services.
Can MKV and MP4 contain subtitles?
Yes, but the details matter. Matroska supports selectable subtitle streams alongside audio and video. MP4 supports MPEG-4 Timed Text and has chapter-marker constructs, but the available subtitle and metadata features differ. Check the subtitle encoding and confirm that your target application supports the specific track and any styling it relies on. Apple’s archived technical note on MP4 describes format-specific differences in chapter markers and metadata; consult current platform documentation for present-day delivery decisions.

Does converting MKV to MP4 reduce quality?
It depends on what the conversion does. Changing the container is different from re-encoding the video or audio. If compatible encoded streams can be copied into a new container without re-encoding, the encoded video data need not change. But not every stream, subtitle, or metadata item is necessarily transferable in a given workflow. If the conversion re-encodes media, the chosen settings can change quality and file size.
- Inspect the input file’s video, audio, subtitle, and metadata tracks.
- Check that the destination accepts those codecs and the relevant profile, level, and settings.
- Choose a workflow that copies compatible streams if preserving encoded video data is the goal; verify which tracks and metadata it can retain.
- Keep the original file and test the converted copy in the intended player or service.
A practical format decision
- Use MP4 for broad playback or a delivery specification that asks for it, after confirming codec and setting support.
- Use MKV when you need its bundled tracks, chapters, or metadata and your player supports the features and codecs you use.
- For an upload or stream, follow the platform’s current container-and-codec requirements; do not infer them from desktop playback.
- If compatibility is uncertain, inspect the file’s streams and compare them with the destination’s official support list. Neither extension alone settles the question.
