mng.dll is the MNG PlugIn for IrfanView, not a Windows system file. If IrfanView reports that mng.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, reinstall the official MNG plugin package that matches your IrfanView installation.
The file enables IrfanView to read and play MNG and JNG images. It normally belongs in IrfanView’s Plugins folder, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Identify your IrfanView installation first
Before downloading anything, establish which IrfanView installation is producing the error.

Check the IrfanView version
- Open IrfanView.
- Select Help.
- Select About IrfanView.
- Note the version and any indication that the application is the 64-bit build.
If IrfanView will not open normally:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select the Details tab.
- Find the IrfanView executable.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.
- Note which installation is being launched.
A 64-bit IrfanView installation requires the 64-bit plugin package. A 32-bit IrfanView installation requires the 32-bit package, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not mix the two plugin sets.
If you have both IrfanView editions installed, repair the installation associated with the shortcut or file association that produces the error.
Fix 1: Reinstall the official IrfanView plugin package
This is the most likely solution for mng.dll errors.
- Close every IrfanView window.
- Open the official IrfanView Plugins page in your browser.
- Download the plugin installer or ZIP package matching your IrfanView architecture.
- Run the installer.
- If Windows displays a permission prompt, approve it only when the installer came from the official IrfanView website.
- Accept the installation location for the IrfanView copy you use.
- If you downloaded a ZIP instead, extract its contents into that IrfanView installation’s
Pluginsfolder. - Start IrfanView again.
- Select Help > Installed Plugins.
- Confirm that the MNG plugin is listed and enabled.
The exact folder depends on how IrfanView was installed. The important point is that mng.dll must be placed with the application’s plugins, not in a Windows system directory.
How to tell whether this worked
Open an MNG or JNG file in IrfanView. You can also return to Help > Installed Plugins and verify that the MNG entry appears without an error.
If the installer reports that IrfanView is still running, close it from Task Manager:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Processes or Details.
- Select the IrfanView process.
- Choose End task.
- Run the plugin installer again.
Do not install a 64-bit plugin package into a 32-bit IrfanView directory or the reverse. A mismatch can produce plugin-load errors, “not designed to run on Windows” messages, or failures that look like a missing DLL.
Fix 2: Check whether the MNG plugin is disabled
The DLL can be present but disabled inside IrfanView.
- Open IrfanView.
- Select Help.
- Select Installed Plugins.
- Locate the MNG plugin.
- If it is disabled or unchecked, enable it.
- Close and restart IrfanView.
- Try opening the MNG or JNG file again.
IrfanView’s installed-plugin screen is also useful for distinguishing a missing plugin from a disabled one. If the MNG entry is absent entirely, reinstall the matching official package rather than copying a standalone file.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine or remove a plugin after installation. Do not immediately turn off antivirus protection.
In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving IrfanView or
mng.dll.
If the file was quarantined:
- Confirm that the file came from the official IrfanView installer or official ZIP.
- Review the detection name and details.
- Scan the downloaded installer again.
- Prefer downloading a fresh copy from the official IrfanView source.
- Restore the file only when its provenance is clear and the detection has been assessed as a false positive.
If the file returns to quarantine immediately, do not repeatedly disable antivirus protection. Keep the file quarantined, obtain a fresh official package, and run a complete malware scan or consult your organization’s security administrator.
Fix 4: Remove a damaged or partial plugin installation
An interrupted update, incomplete extraction, disk problem, or cleanup utility can leave IrfanView with only part of the plugin set.

- Close IrfanView.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find IrfanView.
- Select the menu beside it and choose Uninstall, if available.
- Restart Windows.
- Install IrfanView from the official IrfanView source.
- Install the matching official plugin package.
- Start IrfanView and check Help > Installed Plugins.
If your organization uses a managed installation, contact the administrator before removing the application. A centrally deployed copy may be restored automatically or may use a custom plugin directory.
Fix 5: Check for the wrong IrfanView executable or plugin path
It is possible to repair one IrfanView installation while Windows continues launching another.
Check the shortcut:
- Right-click the IrfanView shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Compare that path with the folder where you installed the plugins.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Confirm that the executable and its
Pluginsfolder belong to the same installation.
Also check how the file is being opened:
- Right-click an MNG or JNG file.
- Select Open with.
- Choose Choose another app.
- Select the intended IrfanView installation.
- Enable the option to always use that app, if appropriate.
Custom plugin paths, portable copies, and multiple application folders can all cause IrfanView to look in a different location from the one you repaired.

Fix 6: Run IrfanView with appropriate permissions
Permissions are not normally the root cause of a missing application plugin, but they can prevent an installer from writing to a protected application directory.
For a diagnostic test:
- Close IrfanView.
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Test the MNG or JNG file.
If the plugin works only when IrfanView is elevated, check the folder permissions and installation method rather than permanently running the program as administrator. Reinstalling into a location managed by the official installer is usually safer than granting broad permissions to the plugin folder.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for registering DLLs that expose the appropriate COM or ActiveX registration entry points.
mng.dll is an IrfanView image plugin. It is not documented as a self-registering Windows component. Running a command such as this is not the correct repair:

It can produce an error about a missing entry point without fixing IrfanView. The correct procedure is to install the official plugin package into the matching IrfanView Plugins directory.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
mng.dll is an application plugin, so Windows component repair tools do not normally reinstall it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself shows broader corruption symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, update failures, or multiple unrelated system errors.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test IrfanView again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows components; they do not normally restore a third-party IrfanView plugin. If the commands report that they could not repair files, resolve that Windows issue separately and then reinstall the official IrfanView plugins.

A graphics driver is not the normal cause of a missing mng.dll plugin. Consider driver work only if IrfanView has broader display failures, crashes with many image formats, or other applications also show graphics problems.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean reinstall:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Follow the prompt, then restart Windows.
- Install the driver supplied by the computer or graphics-card manufacturer.

System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after an installation, update, cleanup operation, or other system change and the earlier configuration was known to work.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select an appropriate restore point.
- Choose Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm the restore only if the selected point is suitable.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the official matching IrfanView plugin if necessary.
System Restore is not the first choice for a missing application plugin. Reinstalling the official package is more targeted and usually easier to reverse.

What not to do
Do not copy mng.dll into System32
Do not place the file in:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those directories are for Windows and shared system components, not for ordinary IrfanView plugins. Windows uses defined DLL search behavior, including the application directory, when loading components. Putting an application DLL in a system directory can create version conflicts and security problems.
Do not download a random standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites websites may provide malware, an incorrect build, the wrong architecture, or an incomplete set of related files. A copied DLL may also fail because the actual problem is a disabled plugin, a wrong IrfanView installation, quarantine, or a damaged package.
Use the official IrfanView application and plugin downloads instead. The only manual copying that is appropriate here is extracting the official IrfanView ZIP into the matching IrfanView Plugins directory.
Do not install both architectures into one folder
A 32-bit IrfanView installation and a 64-bit IrfanView installation can coexist, but each needs its own matching plugin directory. Keep the application and plugin architecture paired.
