2024 was a split year for mobile games. Casual and hybrid-casual titles reached the widest audiences; 4X strategy and survival games converted smaller but highly engaged communities into exceptional spending; live-service games won attention through constant events; and premium-looking RPGs competed across mobile, PC and sometimes console. There was no single “hottest” game because downloads, revenue, engagement, breakout growth and cultural visibility measure different things.
“Hot” depends on what you measure
A download chart measures acquisition. A revenue chart measures consumer spending. Neither one, by itself, tells you which game retained the most players, generated the most play time or offered the best experience.
| Measure | What it captures | Representative 2024 examples |
|---|---|---|
| Downloads | New installs and broad reach | Roblox, Block Blast!, Subway Surfers and other casual games |
| Consumer spending | In-app-purchase monetization | Honor of Kings, MONOPOLY GO!, Royal Match, PUBG Mobile and Last War |
| Active users or time played | Continuing engagement | Roblox and major evergreen live-service games |
| Breakout growth | Momentum versus the previous year | Last War, Whiteout Survival and Brawl Stars |
| New-release impact | Ability to attract attention quickly | Wuthering Waves, AFK Journey and Dungeon & Fighter Mobile |
| Enthusiast buzz | Influence among dedicated players | Wuthering Waves, AFK Journey, Zenless Zone Zero and Pokémon TCG Pocket |
Store rankings also vary by country, platform and chart type. Apple’s year-end lists are regional, while Google Play does not represent the entire Android market, particularly in China.
The games that defined the year
Mass-market leaders
MONOPOLY GO!, Royal Match, Roblox, Honor of Kings, PUBG Mobile, Candy Crush Saga, Coin Master, Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Last War: Survival Game and Whiteout Survival were among the names repeatedly visible in global revenue, download or engagement reporting.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
A PocketGamer.biz year-end estimate put player spending at approximately $2.2 billion for MONOPOLY GO!, about $2 billion for Royal Match, nearly $1.7 billion for PUBG Mobile and roughly $1.6 billion for Roblox. These are third-party estimates, not audited publisher revenue (PocketGamer.biz).
Sensor Tower’s December worldwide snapshot placed Last War: Survival at the top of that month’s revenue ranking, with MONOPOLY GO!, Royal Match and Roblox also among the leaders (Sensor Tower).
The U.S. iPhone snapshot
Apple’s U.S. iPhone App Store chart included Block Blast!, MONOPOLY GO!, Roblox, Township, Last War: Survival, Royal Match, Brawl Stars, Subway Surfers, My Perfect Hotel, Whiteout Survival, Call of Duty: Mobile, Squad Busters, Match Factory! and Wordscapes (Apple’s U.S. chart). This is evidence about U.S. free-game downloads, not a worldwide popularity ranking. Apple explains the country-by-country nature of its year-end charts in its newsroom summary (Apple).
MONOPOLY GO! made casual gaming look like a service
MONOPOLY GO! is the clearest example of 2024’s central formula: familiar rules on the surface, sophisticated live operations underneath. Scopely converted a recognizable board-game brand into short dice-rolling sessions, collection, progression, events and social competition.
Its success was not simply a licensing victory. The game lowered the barrier to entry, gave players frequent reasons to return, and layered timed events, leaderboards, multiplayer interaction and purchase offers over an accessible core loop. It demonstrates that “casual” describes the entry experience, not necessarily the depth of the economy.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Sensor Tower identified strong intellectual property, market momentum and live operations as recurring traits among successful breakout games (Sensor Tower’s 2024 Gaming Spotlight). Royal Match followed a related path with instantly readable match gameplay, polished presentation and a deep progression and event structure.
Why 4X and survival strategy surged
Last War: Survival Game and Whiteout Survival made 4X and survival strategy unusually visible. Their loops combine base construction, resource accumulation, upgrades, alliances, rankings and recurring competitive events.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Long-term progression gives players a reason to return for weeks or months.
- Alliance systems turn individual spending and activity into group goals.
- Speed-ups, bundles, limited offers and event rewards create recurring monetization opportunities.
- Advertising often presents a simple puzzle or survival crisis rather than the full strategy game, widening initial appeal.
This is a useful distinction between reach and commercial power. Sensor Tower’s taxonomy estimated that strategy represented about 21.4% of mobile-game revenue but roughly 4% of downloads in 2024; those figures are provider-specific estimates, not a universal industry census (Sensor Tower report).
Sensor Tower also reported revenue share shifting toward 4X strategy, coin-looter or casino-style games and MOBA, with Last War, MONOPOLY GO! and Brawl Stars as representative performers (Sensor Tower).
Hypercasual did not disappear; it evolved
Hypercasual remained prominent in download charts, but its leading subgenres were no longer the uncontested growth engine of the early 2020s. Sensor Tower’s 2024 outlook found declining performance among leading download subgenres while identifying faster growth in simulation sports, simulation racing, 4X March Battle, luck-based party games, match-3, merge and idle RPG (Sensor Tower).

The strategic direction was hybridcasual: immediately understandable controls combined with a longer progression curve, meta-systems, live events and both advertising and optional purchases. Sensor Tower later described hybridcasual in-app-purchase revenue as a major 2024 growth area (Sensor Tower).

Premium-looking RPGs raised the ceiling
High-production RPGs occupied a different market lane from mass-market puzzle and board games, but they remained culturally and commercially important.
- Wuthering Waves paired open-world action with cross-platform ambitions.
- AFK Journey made an attractive fantasy RPG accessible through automated or semi-automated progression and live-service systems.
- Zenless Zone Zero extended HoYoverse’s anime action-RPG model.
- Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail showed how a mobile game can operate as a global entertainment franchise.
- Pokémon TCG Pocket used major intellectual property, collecting and social exchange to make a late-2024 launch broadly approachable.
These games are not direct replacements for casual hits. They compete for longer sessions, storage space, device performance and cross-platform attention. Players should expect substantial downloads, battery use, account requirements and monetization systems such as gacha or battle passes.
Market totals also depend on methodology. Newzoo estimated mobile at approximately $92.6 billion, or 49% of global games revenue, in 2024 (Newzoo). Sensor Tower and IDC projected about $83 billion, while Sensor Tower later reported approximately $82 billion in mobile IAP revenue; those figures use different definitions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Roblox showed that mobile gaming is also a platform
Roblox is not one fixed game loop. It is a user-generated-content platform, social space and distribution ecosystem where creators supply a constantly changing catalog of experiences.

Its appeal combines discovery, avatars, identity, persistent communities and creator participation. PocketGamer.biz estimated approximately 211.9 million worldwide App Store and Google Play downloads in 2024 (PocketGamer.biz). Downloads are not monthly active users, play time or revenue, but the figure illustrates Roblox’s exceptional acquisition reach.
Brawl Stars and the comeback effect
Brawl Stars demonstrated that a game does not need to launch in 2024 to become one of the year’s hottest titles. Frequent updates, new characters and modes, themed collaborations, social competition and stronger promotion helped revive attention around its short-session multiplayer format.
Third-party reporting estimated a dramatic year-over-year revenue increase, while Sensor Tower’s H1 report listed Brawl Stars among leading mobile titles. Exact growth percentages depend on the provider and comparison period (MobileGamer.biz; Sensor Tower).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Advertising became discovery as well as monetization
Mobile advertising shaped what players found and how games paid for continued development.
- Rewarded video: an optional ad viewed for currency, energy or another benefit.
- Interstitials: full-screen ads inserted between play sessions.
- Playable ads: interactive mini-demos designed to communicate a game in seconds.
- Short-form social creatives: videos optimized for TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and similar feeds.
Some advertisements simplify or exaggerate the underlying game. Sensor Tower’s 2024 analysis emphasized that rewards, genre relevance and engaging creative influenced responses to in-game advertising (Sensor Tower). Advertising therefore became part of user acquisition and product positioning, not merely a revenue line.

Live operations were the common denominator
The leading games behaved as ongoing services rather than finished products. Daily missions, seasonal passes, limited-time events, new characters, anniversary campaigns, collaborations, leaderboards, alliance competitions and balance patches repeatedly brought players back.
That model has trade-offs. Fresh content can become fatigue; generous rewards can sit beside purchase pressure; competitive events can raise pay-to-win concerns; and maintaining a daily routine can feel like a second job. A game’s update cadence is evidence of an operating model, not proof of a good player experience.
What was hot for different players?
| Player need | 2024 examples | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Short sessions | Block Blast!, Royal Match, Brawl Stars | Ads, energy limits and event timers |
| Social competition | Brawl Stars, Roblox, MONOPOLY GO! | Leaderboards, chat, age settings and recurring events |
| Strategy | Last War: Survival Game, Whiteout Survival | Alliance commitments, speed-ups and spending pressure |
| Anime or story RPGs | Wuthering Waves, Honkai: Star Rail, Zenless Zone Zero | Storage, battery, device performance and gacha |
| Collecting and major IP | Pokémon TCG Pocket, MONOPOLY GO!, Roblox | Timed offers and randomized or repeatable collections |
Free-to-download is not the same as free. Battle passes, gacha, energy systems, timed bundles and rewarded ads can all shape progression. Players seeking less advertising or purchase friction may prefer subscription catalogs, but availability varies by country and those services do not necessarily include the biggest free-to-play games.

How to read 2024 mobile-game rankings
- Check whether the list measures downloads, gross consumer spending, estimated IAP revenue, active users or time played.
- Check geography and storefront coverage. A U.S. iPhone chart is not a worldwide Android ranking.
- Separate mobile-only results from cross-platform revenue; PC and console spending may be excluded.
- Treat Sensor Tower, Newzoo, PocketGamer.biz and other figures as estimates with different taxonomies and methodologies.
- Separate commercial heat from critical acclaim, cultural visibility and personal fit.
Newzoo’s 2024 consumer research covered more than 73,000 consumers across 36 markets and found that mobile offered much broader reach, while PC and console players spent more on average (Newzoo Global Gamer Study). Players also overlap platforms, so “mobile gamer” is not a mutually exclusive identity. Sensor Tower associated younger audiences more strongly with sandbox, racing and RPG games, while older audiences showed stronger preferences for solitaire, match-3 and slots (Sensor Tower).
What 2024 ultimately rewarded
The strongest mobile games of 2024 were easy to enter, difficult to exhaust, socially connected, regularly updated and capable of monetizing a smaller group of highly engaged players. Casual games delivered reach; 4X strategy delivered revenue intensity; RPGs delivered production spectacle; Roblox delivered a platform; and live operations connected all of them.
