Short answer: Mobox can still deliver impressive Windows-game performance on a compatible Snapdragon phone, especially for older DirectX 9 titles. But calling it “the fastest emulator” without qualification is no longer accurate. Mobox is a Termux/Wine/Box64 compatibility stack, its original repository has been archived read-only since June 20, 2025, and results vary dramatically by phone, driver, game and thermal conditions. For easier setup, a current Winlator build is usually the safer first choice; for demanding games, streaming or a handheld PC is often better.
What Mobox actually is
Mobox is not a conventional console-style emulator or a virtual Windows machine. It combines several translation layers to run Windows x86 software on an ARM Android phone:
- Termux supplies a Linux-like terminal environment on Android.
- Wine translates Windows API calls without requiring a complete Windows installation.
- Box64, and where needed Box86, translates x86 and x86_64 Linux binaries for ARM64 hardware.
- DXVK converts Direct3D 8/9/10/11 calls to Vulkan.
- Mesa, VirGL and Turnip provide alternative graphics-driver paths, depending on the phone’s GPU.
- Termux-X11 provides the graphical display, while Input Bridge maps touch controls to keyboard and mouse input.
The components and their roles are documented in the Mobox repository. Calling the result an “emulator” is convenient, but “Windows compatibility and translation environment” is more precise.
The important 2026 caveat: Mobox is archived
The original Mobox GitHub repository was archived and made read-only on June 20, 2025. That means it should not be treated as an actively maintained project receiving normal upstream fixes. Community forks, driver bundles and unofficial guides may continue, but they are separate projects and can differ substantially.

Mobox may still be worthwhile for an experienced Snapdragon user who wants low-level control. It is a poor default recommendation for someone expecting current bug fixes, a polished installer or predictable compatibility.
Who should try it?

Phone requirements and realistic expectations
Mobox recommends Android 10 or newer and does not require root. Its documentation specifically favors Snapdragon phones with Adreno 6xx or Adreno 725–740 GPUs because Turnip and DXVK support is generally strongest there. That is guidance, not a frame-rate guarantee.
Minimum plausible target
- A recent 64-bit Android device with Vulkan support.
- Several gigabytes of free internal storage for the game, Wine prefix, shader cache and temporary files.
- A title known to work with Wine and DXVK.
- An external controller, keyboard or mouse for practical input.
Better target
- A recent Snapdragon flagship or upper-midrange chip with a well-supported Adreno GPU.
- 8 GB or more of RAM for heavier games, although Mobox does not establish a universal RAM minimum.
- Fast internal storage and active cooling for sustained sessions.
Poor candidates
Low-end phones, older or inconsistently supported Mali GPUs, devices with little free storage and phones that aggressively terminate background processes are much less attractive. Termux also documents Android 12-and-newer process restrictions: phantom-process and excessive-CPU controls can kill long-running workloads, especially under aggressive vendor battery management.
Installation: the archived project’s documented route
Because upstream is frozen, these steps may fail as dependencies change. Use the archived repository as the reference point, avoid random APK mirrors, and install only games and installers you legitimately own.

- Install Termux, Termux-X11 and Input Bridge from compatible, reputable sources linked by the project.
- In Termux, run the documented installer:

moboxDo not mix Termux packages signed by different sources. The Termux project warns that F-Droid, GitHub and other builds use different signing keys; all Termux components on a device should come from the same source. Back up important Termux data before changing sources.
First display and graphics configuration
In Termux-X11 preferences, Mobox documents this sensible starting profile:
- Display resolution mode: Exact
- Display resolution: 1280×720
- Reseed screen while soft keyboard is open: Off
- Fullscreen on device display: On
- Force landscape orientation: On
- Hide display cutout: On
- Show additional keyboard: Off
- Prefer scancodes when possible: On
1280×720 is only a starting point. Lower resolutions can reduce GPU load; higher resolutions increase image quality but may expose scaling, input and performance problems.
Graphics choices are game- and device-specific:
- VirGL is a broad fallback, but is generally less attractive for demanding 3D games.
- Turnip is often the preferred route on supported Adreno devices; driver version matters.
- DXVK is useful for Direct3D 8/9/10/11 games where Vulkan translation works. See the DXVK project.
- Other paths such as VKD3D or D8VK may help particular APIs, but are not universal solutions.
Mobox exposes Mesa, Turnip, DXVK HUD, Wine-container, Box86/Box64 and compatibility settings. It also documents an Adreno flickering fix for some Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, 8+ Gen 1 and 7+ Gen 2 phones. There is no single “best driver” setting for every game.

Which games are realistic?
Do not confuse reaching a title screen with being playable. A meaningful test also checks saves, audio, cutscenes, input, frame-time stability, thermal throttling and recovery after Android suspends the app.

If you publish performance figures, identify the exact phone and chip, Android version, Wine and DXVK builds, driver, resolution, graphics preset, test duration and whether performance throttled. Without controlled testing, “fastest” is an opinion, not a benchmark result.
Controls are a major limitation
Mobox’s documented touch-control route uses Input Bridge. Touch mapping can work for simple keyboard layouts, but mouse-heavy games remain awkward. Cursor capture, simultaneous mouse movement and keyboard input, Android gesture conflicts and landscape orientation all need attention.

A Bluetooth or USB-C gamepad is strongly preferable for controller-native games. A telescopic pad such as the Backbone One or Razer Kishi V2 can improve streamed games and gamepad-compatible titles, but it cannot fix Wine, driver or launcher failures. Check your phone’s connector, case clearance and the exact controller model before buying.

Troubleshooting without changing everything at once
Work through this order: does Mobox open; does Termux-X11 display; does the Wine prefix finish; does the launcher open; does the game reach its menu; does 3D rendering work; does input work; does it throttle after several minutes?
Common documented fixes
- Termux crashes when opening Mobox: remove custom Termux theme scripts with
rm -rf $PREFIX/glibc/opt/termux-style. - Prefix creation freezes during PhysX installation: change options in the Compatibility settings menu.
- Snapdragon 845 problems: disable dri3 in Compatibility settings.
- Android kills Termux: review battery optimization, phantom-process restrictions and vendor background-process controls.
- Need a log: open
Mobox → Settings → Debug settings; the documented log path is/sdcard/mobox_log.txt.
Keep separate notes for each change. A driver swap, Wine rebuild and Box64 tweak made simultaneously leaves no way to identify the cause of a failure.

The Winlator project also uses Wine and Box86/Box64 and exposes per-game compatibility, driver and performance settings. Neither project is a universal winner without testing the same phone, game, resolution, driver and thermal conditions.

If you own a capable computer, Steam Remote Play or Moonlight usually provides better compatibility and image quality for modern games. Streaming needs a powered host PC and a reliable network, and it does not help with offline play or local execution.

A Steam Deck or similar handheld PC is a different category, not an Android replacement. It is the better fit when you want physical controls, x86 hardware and dependable local PC gaming rather than driver experimentation.
Bottom line
Mobox remains one of the more configurable ways to experiment with older Windows games on a suitable Snapdragon/Adreno phone. It is not defensibly “the fastest emulator” for everyone in 2026: the project is archived, compatibility is highly variable, and controls and Android process management can undermine an otherwise successful launch. Choose Mobox for tinkering and tuning; choose a current Winlator build for a friendlier local setup, streaming for demanding games you already own on PC, and a handheld PC when reliability matters most.
