Activision moved the 2022 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (MWII) and 2023 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (MWIII) out of the shared Call of Duty HQ installation and made them standalone game entries. Both remain available across platforms, and the change was completed in 2025.
What was removed from Call of Duty HQ?
Activision said older MWII and MWIII files in the shared Call of Duty experience would be automatically removed on August 7, 2025, to help free storage space. That cleanup removed legacy files from the shared installation; it did not remove the games themselves or cancel access for players who own them. Activision’s MWII installation guidance and MWIII installation guidance continue to list the titles as available.
The practical change is where the games are installed and launched: they now have their own game entries outside the shared Call of Duty install. Activision says they can be launched from a platform’s dashboard or library, and also documents launching them through the main Call of Duty install.
How to install or reinstall MW2 or MW3
Digital copies
- Open your platform’s game library or store and find the owned title: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.
- Install the game from its individual listing. Activision also says you can use the All Games tab in Call of Duty to reach the platform store.
- After installation, launch the game from its platform dashboard or library. Activision documents cross-launching from the main Call of Duty install as an additional option.
Activision lists console libraries and PC storefronts including Battle.net, Steam, and Microsoft Store. The exact menu labels can vary by platform, so use the title’s store or library entry if the route through Call of Duty is not visible.

Console disc copies
There is an installation exception for console discs: Activision says the Call of Duty experience must be installed to install MWII or MWIII from disc. The games are standalone after installation, but disc setup still depends on the shared experience being present.
For MWIII, Activision warns that some physical-disc installs may temporarily display the MWII name and icon until the game completes its update after the Day One patch.

What changed on Steam?
Steam users received individual MWII and MWIII library entries instead of relying on the Call of Duty HQ launcher entry for those games. Steam’s support notice says content that remained in the existing HQ installation needed to be downloaded again through the new game entries after August 7, 2025. This separate-entry and redownload detail applies to Steam; it should not be assumed to describe how every other platform handles its library.

Call of Duty described HQ in a November 8, 2023 explainer as a shared “front door” for console and PC, bringing MWIII, Warzone, and MWII content into one place while managing title-specific files separately. The publisher said the setup supported Carry Forward, file management, and switching among its games; it also noted that file sizes vary by platform and region. This explains the original shared-launcher approach, not the specific reason for the later separation. Call of Duty’s HQ explainer provides that historical context.

A 2024 Activision roadmap likewise described the shared install as a way to manage content, with the then-planned interface prioritizing the newest annual title and Warzone while older titles remained accessible through the library or Last Played. That roadmap is historical interface context, not a guide to every platform’s current menus. The roadmap announcement outlines that earlier plan.
