As of August 18, 2026, Activision’s known-issues page does not list a general Season 02 crash affecting all players; it does list specific DLC-message and disc-installation problems. Start with game and console updates, check the installed MWII content, then try license restoration and Safe Mode repair before reinstalling anything.
Activision’s Season 02 overview gives the launch date. Its known-issues list can change; the status described here was checked August 18, 2026.
Was Season 02 a known cause of MWII crashes?
Historically, crashes were a recognized problem during the Season 02 update period. Activision’s February 2023 Season 02 patch notes included known crashes, and the later Season 02 Reloaded notes described fixes intended to reduce known crashes and improve stability. Infinity Ward also identified crashes, particularly in DMZ, as a priority before the season: Season 02 DMZ update.
That history does not establish that every PS5 or PS4 crash after Season 02 had the same cause, or that the old season update is responsible for a crash now. Activision’s current list instead names particular installation and DLC issues, including a PS4 message that one or more DLC packs are out of date and a disc-installation issue affecting some PS4 and PS5 users. Check the current MWII known issues and PlayStation service status before troubleshooting an online-only failure.

First identify what is failing
A game closing to the dashboard, a frozen screen, a missing-content prompt, and a console powering off are different problems. Note the exact message and where it happens before changing files or reinstalling.
- MWII closes to the dashboard or shows CE-34878-0: treat it first as an application, update, installation, or console-software problem. Activision’s crash and freeze guidance covers this PlayStation crash message.
- The game freezes but stays open: close it from the console menu and restart; record whether the freeze occurs at startup, in a particular mode, or while matchmaking.
- The game returns to a menu or asks to install content: check MWII packs and licenses before treating it as a conventional crash.
- The console itself shuts down or reports overheating: check ventilation and console condition. A full power loss is not just an MWII application crash.
Try these fixes in order
1. Close MWII and restart
- Press the PS button, highlight Call of Duty, press Options, and select Close Game.
- Restart the console and launch MWII again.
Activision recommends closing and restarting the application, and rebooting the console after a crash when needed. See its crash and freeze troubleshooting.
2. Update MWII and the console
Install available game updates first, then check for PlayStation system software updates.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
- PS5: highlight Call of Duty on the home screen or in Game Library, press Options, and choose Check for Update. Then open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- PS4: highlight Call of Duty, press Options, and choose Check for Update. Then open Settings > System Software Update.
Activision lists current console software among its initial checks for crashes in its MWII crash guidance.
3. Check installed MWII content
If only Multiplayer, Warzone, DMZ, or another particular mode fails—or the game says a pack is missing or outdated—open the game’s Manage Files or File Management screen and check that the required MWII components are installed. Menu wording can vary by game build and platform. The base application does not necessarily include every mode’s separately managed content.
For a disc copy, check that the game has finished installing and that its add-ons correspond to the disc’s region. A mismatch between disc and PlayStation Store regions can interfere with add-on recognition; verify the edition and region before removing content. Activision’s known-issues page also lists a disc-installation issue affecting some PS4 and PS5 users.

4. Restore licenses if content is unavailable
Try this when a purchased game or add-on appears unavailable, a padlock appears, installed DLC is not recognized, or the game was acquired through another account’s console sharing. Restoring licenses refreshes entitlement data; it does not repair corrupted game files and is not a guaranteed crash fix.
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
PlayStation describes license restoration in its downloaded-game troubleshooting.
5. Restart fully and check ventilation
Turn the console off completely rather than leaving it in Rest Mode. Once its power indicator is off, wait briefly, turn it back on, and test MWII before opening other apps. If the console is hot, unusually loud, or enclosed in a cabinet, move it to a cool, well-ventilated space. Activision also advises checking console condition and ventilation in its crash troubleshooting.

6. Clear cache or rebuild the database in Safe Mode
- PS5: turn the console off. Hold the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB, and press PS. Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database; clear the cache first if that option is offered, and rebuild the database if the problem continues.
- PS4: turn the console off. Hold the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB, press PS, then choose Rebuild Database.
PlayStation includes cache clearing and database rebuilding in its download troubleshooting and game-launch troubleshooting. Rebuilding the database reorganizes the console’s content index; it is not the same as deleting saved games. Avoid destructive Safe Mode choices unless your data is backed up.
7. Reinstall the affected pack before the whole game
- Open MWII’s Manage Game Content or the console’s add-on management screen.
- Remove only the mode or pack that appears to be failing, then restart the console.
- Download that pack again and test the affected mode.
- If selective removal is unavailable or fails, back up important saved data, delete MWII, reinstall the base game, let its update finish, and add the required MWII packs. Test modes one at a time.
PlayStation recommends deleting and redownloading a problematic game or download when other steps fail: game and download troubleshooting. Reinstallation is not guaranteed to solve a crash caused by damaged storage, inadequate free space, an entitlement problem, overheating, or an unresolved online-service issue.

Once updates and content checks are complete, test more than one mode if available: Campaign, Multiplayer, Warzone, DMZ, or local/offline content. Compare solo play with party play, and note whether the failure happens at a particular map, menu, or matchmaking step.

- Only one mode fails: investigate that mode’s pack, configuration, or online service first.
- All modes fail: installation corruption, console software, storage, overheating, or hardware becomes more plausible.
- Only online matchmaking fails: check Activision and PlayStation service status and your connection; an online-only problem does not explain an offline dashboard crash.
- Only a disc copy fails: check disc condition, region compatibility, and installation status, and compare the symptom with Activision’s disc-installation notice.
- PS4 repeatedly reports outdated DLC: prioritize pack management and support escalation. Activision lists this as a PS4 issue; buying a PS5 is not an established general fix.
Using another profile or PSN account can be a diagnostic comparison, not a universal remedy. Do not delete saved data or create a new account as a first-line fix.
What to record before asking for help
Useful details help support staff distinguish an MWII defect from a system, content, or entitlement issue. Record:
- Exact error code, including whether it is CE-34878-0, and whether the game closes, freezes, or returns to a menu.
- Console model (PS4, PS4 Slim, PS4 Pro, PS5, or PS5 Digital Edition), and whether the copy is digital or disc.
- Disc region and PlayStation account region, if relevant; game version and when the problem began.
- Mode, map, weapon, operator, or menu at the point of failure, plus whether solo play differs from parties or matchmaking.
- Which content packs are installed, whether other games crash, whether the console overheats or powers off, and whether reinstalling a particular pack changed anything.
When to contact Activision or PlayStation
Contact Activision
Use Activision’s MWII support hub when the failure is tied to MWII content or an online mode, began after a MWII update, or involves repeated DLC-out-of-date messages despite the required packs appearing installed. Include the reproducible mode and any matching known issue.
Contact PlayStation
Use PlayStation support if other games also crash, system-software errors recur, the console overheats or shuts down, it cannot read other games, or the problem persists after Safe Mode repair and a clean reinstall. PlayStation’s game-launch guidance asks for the error code, what happens, and the steps that reproduce it.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If crashes occur only while using nonstandard third-party PlayStation hardware, include that detail; Activision says it cannot guarantee functionality with third-party accessories such as memory cards, controllers, chips, or cables. That qualification is not a reason to assume ordinary controller or HDMI problems without evidence.
