ModRetro Chromatic is a premium handheld built to play original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges—not a general-purpose emulator or a Game Boy Advance system. Palmer Luckey’s company introduced it on June 3, 2024; it later returned in a broader retail push. Its defining choices are a native 160×144 display, FPGA-based hardware, a metal shell and a focus on physical games. Those choices make it appealing to cartridge collectors, but its narrow scope and price are hard to justify if you simply want an inexpensive way to play retro games.
As of the official U.S. listings checked for this article on August 16, 2026, Chromatic starts at $199.99 with a Tetris bundle. Price, stock and screen-cover options can change.
What is the ModRetro Chromatic?
ModRetro, founded by Palmer Luckey, describes Chromatic as a modern evolution of the Game Boy experience. It is a dedicated, cartridge-based handheld designed for original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, alongside new physical releases for the platform. The June 3, 2024 announcement was a product and platform reveal, not just a concept announcement: ModRetro presented a production device and a plan for games on physical cartridges. GamesBeat covered the original unveiling, while ModRetro outlined its platform vision.
That distinction matters. Chromatic is not simply a new shell for an old Game Boy, nor is it primarily a digital library machine. Its appeal is a focused combination of cartridge playback, a Game Boy-style control layout and modern display and construction choices. Luckey’s association is part of the story, but ModRetro’s product and engineering claims should be judged on their own rather than treated as proof of quality.

These specifications come from ModRetro’s product listing. They describe the company’s product; they are not independent durability or compatibility test results.
Why the 160×144 display is central to the pitch
Game Boy and Game Boy Color games were designed around a 160×144-pixel image. A higher-resolution modern screen has to scale that image, which can make pixels uneven or introduce interpolation. Chromatic’s panel uses the original resolution, so each game pixel can map directly to a display pixel. ModRetro also describes a color-correction layer intended to evoke Game Boy Color artwork. Its explanation of the screen and design trade-offs is in “Display – The Hard Way.”
This is a deliberate specialization, not a claim that native resolution is best for every retro system. A 160×144 screen suits Game Boy-era games, but it offers less flexibility for other platforms or modern content than a high-resolution handheld such as the Analogue Pocket. And although Chromatic is meant to reproduce the original image format, its backlit IPS panel is not the same screen technology as Nintendo’s original hardware.

ModRetro markets Chromatic as FPGA-based hardware rather than a conventional software-emulation handheld. FPGA describes a reconfigurable hardware approach; it does not, by itself, establish every detail of how a particular game is implemented. The careful takeaway is that ModRetro positions Chromatic as hardware-focused, not that every possible distinction between hardware and emulation has been independently demonstrated.

ModRetro says Chromatic supports original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges and its own Chromatic cartridges. That makes it a practical option for someone who already owns games, and the launch bundle pairs the handheld with a physical Tetris cartridge—a deliberate echo of the original North American Game Boy bundle. The included Tetris game is not the same thing as owning a wider library of ModRetro releases.
Cartridge format alone should not be treated as a guarantee for every unusual case. A dirty connector, damaged cartridge, failing save battery, modified board, flash cartridge or special accessory can affect results. Before buying specifically for an uncommon cartridge or peripheral, check with ModRetro or a reliable compatibility report for that exact item. ModRetro’s broad compatibility claims are its own; no single claim should be read as a promise that every third-party modification will work.
ModRetro is also building a physical-game library of new releases and re-releases. The company lists games through its Chromatic Quickstart page. Physical cartridges offer a simple, offline way to play and collect, but they also mean buying, storing and maintaining individual games. Chromatic does not replace that cost with a large digital storefront.

Chromatic can run from three AA batteries, USB-C external power or the optional Rechargeable Power Core. ModRetro’s power-options support page gives battery-orientation instructions and says the three AA cells should be of similar voltage. USB-C can power the system without draining the installed battery source.

The Power Core is a 2,250mAh lithium-ion pack that ModRetro rates for up to 16 hours of gameplay, with a stated recharge time of roughly two to five hours. Treat the runtime as a company maximum estimate, not a guaranteed result: brightness, volume, game and usage affect battery life. The pack is optional, not included automatically with the console. On the official pages checked for this article, it was listed at $29.99 and marked sold out.
There is a particularly important caveat for First Edition owners: ModRetro warns that a depleted Power Core left inside a First Edition Chromatic for several weeks may become unrecoverable. If you own that combination, do not leave a discharged pack installed for extended storage; follow ModRetro’s current care guidance. The company has also described a charging station intended to revive or maintain depleted packs, but a product plan is not the same as confirmed current availability. Price, editions and what comes in the box
The current official U.S. console listings showed Chromatic from $199.99 on August 16, 2026. The relevant listing is a Tetris bundle, and the product page says the console includes three AA batteries. Screen-cover choice—Gorilla Glass or sapphire—and shell variant affect which SKU a buyer selects and may affect price. Confirm the exact listing and package contents before ordering; do not assume the optional Power Core is included.

The timeline is easy to blur. ModRetro unveiled Chromatic in June 2024, and the first edition was marketed as limited. A later retail push was described in July 2025, so the device should not be framed as a new 2026 announcement. The currently listed product and stock status are more useful to a buyer than old first-edition scarcity language. Check ModRetro’s Chromatic collection for live U.S. variants and pricing.

ModRetro promotes magnesium alloy, PBT buttons and a choice of Gorilla Glass or sapphire as premium materials. Sapphire is positioned as the more scratch-resistant option; Gorilla Glass is the alternative intended to balance scratch and impact resistance. The company’s “heirloom” and decades-long durability language is a design aspiration, not an independently verified lifespan guarantee.

For an original system, inspect the screen, buttons, cartridge contacts and battery compartment, and budget for repair if needed. With a modded console, ask who performed the work, which parts were used and what support is available. For Analogue Pocket, verify current price, availability and adapters directly with Analogue; those details can change.
Who should buy Chromatic?
- Good fit: You own Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridges and want a dedicated way to play them with a backlit native-resolution display.
- Good fit: You value physical games, a premium metal-bodied device and a focused, offline experience more than broad system support.
- Good fit: You are interested in ModRetro’s new physical releases and accept that building a library means buying cartridges.
- Probably not a fit: You need Game Boy Advance support or want one handheld for many console and handheld systems.
- Probably not a fit: You want ROM menus, save states, shaders, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a large high-resolution screen or a broad digital storefront.
- Probably not a fit: Your priority is the cheapest possible way to play Game Boy games, or you do not want to collect physical cartridges.
- Consider carefully: You require a rechargeable battery pack. The Power Core is optional and was listed as sold out in the official pages checked here; AA batteries and USB-C remain alternatives.
Verdict
Chromatic is best understood as a luxury, focused Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridge handheld. Its strongest reasons to buy are the native-resolution backlit display, premium materials and straightforward use of physical games. Its main costs are equally clear: a $199.99 starting price, a narrow system target, continued spending on cartridges and no assurance that the optional rechargeable pack is available when you want it. For an existing cartridge owner who wants a polished dedicated player, those priorities may make sense. For a casual player seeking breadth or value, an original system, a carefully chosen modded Game Boy, an Analogue Pocket or general-purpose emulation is likely a better match.
