There are two different Mohg boss fights in Elden Ring. Mohg, Lord of Blood waits at the end of Mohgwyn Palace, while Mohg, the Omen is found in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. For the Lord of Blood encounter, the most important preparation is the Purifying Crystal Tear for Nihil, with Mohg’s Shackle available for temporary control in phase one.
Which Mohg are you looking for?
The name refers to two separate encounters, so the location depends on the boss you intend to fight.

This guide focuses on Mohg, Lord of Blood, because he is the encounter associated with the Blood Lord remembrance, Mohg’s Great Rune and entry to the Realm of Shadow.
What is Mohg, Lord of Blood weak to?
The available boss information does not establish one universal damage-type weakness that makes the fight easy. Preparation is more important than chasing a single element. Mohg’s attacks combine physical trident damage with bloodflame, and the bloodflame effects can inflict both fire damage and blood loss.

Prioritize survival tools
- Put the Purifying Crystal Tear in your Flask of Wondrous Physick. It is the named countermeasure for Mohg’s Nihil ritual.
- Use Mohg’s Shackle if you want a short stun and extra hits during phase one.
- Fire and hemorrhage resistance are sensible defensive priorities because of the fight’s bloodflame damage and blood-loss pressure.
- Carry enough healing to recover from unavoidable chip damage and mistakes during the ritual.
Do not rely on damage alone
Mohg’s trident swings have long delays and broad arcs. The reliable approach is to watch the wind-up, roll through the committed attack, take a short punish and reset your spacing before the next bloodflame pattern. Panic-rolling away often leaves you in a worse position or in a burning pool.
Preparation before entering the arena
- Equip the Flask of Wondrous Physick containing the Purifying Crystal Tear and place it where you can activate it without searching through menus.
- Decide whether Mohg’s Shackle fits your build. It offers control only in phase one, so use it to create safe punish windows rather than treating it as a complete strategy.
- Add fire and hemorrhage resistance where you can do so without abandoning the damage, stamina or poise your build needs.
- Enter with a plan for the arena: leave room to see the trident, avoid corners and keep burning bloodflame pools from cutting off your retreat.
How to beat Mohg, Lord of Blood
Phase one: read the delayed trident attacks
Mohg can use wide trident swings, thrusts, Bloodboon throws and showers, Bloodflame Talons and explosive bloodflame attacks. Many of his motions are deliberately delayed, so rolling as soon as the animation begins is usually too early.

- Stay close enough to read the attack and punish, but not so close that the trident’s broad arc catches you before you can react.
- Roll through the committed hit rather than repeatedly rolling backward.
- After one or two attacks, stop and re-establish spacing. Bloodflame on the floor can turn an otherwise successful punish into a trade.
- Use Mohg’s Shackle only when the opening is safe; its temporary stun can create a few additional hits, but it does not remove the need to manage the arena.
The Nihil transition: survive the blood ritual
When Mohg begins the ritual, stop trying to trade damage. Activate the Flask of Wondrous Physick containing the Purifying Crystal Tear as the transition begins. Be prepared to heal through any remaining damage rather than standing in a dangerous position to force an attack.
The tear is the specific preparation item listed for Nihil. Without a clean mitigation window, the ritual can consume a large part of your health and leave you poorly positioned for the second phase.

Phase two: control the floor and the camera
After the ritual, Mohg gains wings, covers more space and leaves more fire on the ground. The same delayed attacks are harder to read when his movement and area coverage expand.
- Keep the camera on Mohg while checking the arena edges so a winged movement does not pin you against a wall.
- Do not stand in burning pools to finish a low-risk-looking punish.
- Wait for a clearly completed attack before committing to damage; the wider phase-two patterns make greedy trades more expensive.
- Move deliberately toward open ground instead of rolling repeatedly and losing track of where the next bloodflame hazard will appear.
Choosing a safer strategy
Your main choices are not separate “correct” builds; they are ways to manage the fight’s three recurring risks: Nihil, limited control and hazardous ground.
