There is no evidence-based winner yet. Tokyo Game Show 2026 previews show several Ascendance weapon actions with aerial roles, but published damage values, motion values, and comparative hunt results are not available. The footage supports comparing how weapons get airborne and reconnect with a monster—not ranking their aerial damage.
What the previews show about aerial play
The following comparison reflects action descriptions in a September 2026 editorial preview of Capcom’s Tokyo Game Show footage. These are preview observations, not damage tests or proof of a repeatable aerial strategy.

How to read the comparison
“Works best in the air” can mean several different things: getting airborne, landing an attack while airborne, evading in the air, or getting back to the monster to continue attacking. The previewed actions demonstrate different pieces of that puzzle, so they do not form a like-for-like strength ranking.
- Air access: Hammer and Insect Glaive are shown launching the hunter; Dual Blades has an airborne evade.
- Contact and re-engagement: Switch Axe has the clearest described return-to-monster action. Gunlance has an aerial follow-up in a shown sequence.
- Boost use: These actions appear in the context of Ascendance’s Boost system, but the available descriptions do not establish every move’s activation conditions or how long an aerial sequence can be sustained.
- Performance: The action roundup reports that motion values and damage multipliers had not been announced as of its September 21, 2026 update. It provides no tested hunt results with which to score damage, uptime, or overall aerial strength. (RPG Site’s preview)
On the available evidence, Hammer has the clearest previewed launch-into-plunge attack; Dual Blades has an airborne evade; Switch Axe has a re-engagement move; Gunlance has an aerial follow-up; and Insect Glaive remains an obvious aerial specialist to watch. Those are differences in demonstrated action roles—not proof that one weapon performs best overall in the air.

How Ascendance’s Boost system fits in
Capcom’s TGS preview describes Boost Action as weapon-specific attacks and empowered actions available for a limited time. The Boost gauge fills over time and with landed strikes, while Focus Strikes that destroy wounds during Boost recharge the draining gauge. PlayStation Blog Japan’s Sachie Kobari explained: “The Boost gauge fills gradually over time and with every strike landed. Crucially, destroying wounds with Focus Strike while in the Boost state recharges the draining gauge, enabling high-level tactics such as shattering a wound just before Boost wears off to keep the momentum going.” These are previewed mechanics and may change before release. Capcom has announced Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance as paid expansion content for Monster Hunter Wilds, scheduled for 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is not available now. (Capcom’s June 8, 2026 announcement)

The base game is required. In its preview, Capcom USA-authored PlayStation Blog says players need Hunter Rank 40 and must complete “Awaking From a Dream” to start the story and enter Master Rank at launch. The post describes the Boost Bracer as enabling abilities through the Hunter’s Slinger and temporarily enhancing combat capabilities across all 14 weapon types. (PlayStation Blog)
