In Monster Hunter Wilds, your first decorations become available after you defeat The Black Flame in Chapter 2-4. From there, you can earn them as quest rewards, get them from High Rank investigation bonuses, or use the Melding Pot in Suja. To equip one, open the decorations menu at Gemma’s Smithy or in a camp, then choose a jewel that matches the equipment slot’s type and level.
When do decorations unlock?
PC Gamer reports that decorations first arrive after you defeat The Black Flame in Chapter 2-4. Your initial rewards appear as Mystery Orbs, which are appraised automatically at the end of the hunt. The resulting decorations are divided between weapon and armor equipment.

The guide also reports that the Melding Pot becomes available in Chapter 3-3, after you speak to Vio in Suja. Melding lets you spend collected decorations or certain equipment materials to obtain orbs or specific decorations. The exact current progression requirements for every melding tier are not established here; check the options shown at the Melding Pot in your game rather than relying on older tier milestones.

Quest rewards
Decorations and Mystery Orbs can come from hunt quest rewards. Orbs are appraised at the end of the hunt, so check the resulting decorations after the reward sequence.

High Rank investigation bonuses
High Rank investigations can list decoration orbs among their bonus rewards. To set one up, select a monster you encounter on the map and save it as an investigation using Guild Points. You can attempt a saved investigation up to three times for its listed bonus rewards, according to PC Gamer’s guide. Check the reward list before starting: the orb rewards are listed bonuses, not a guaranteed drop from every investigation.
Melding at Suja
After the Melding Pot unlocks in Chapter 3-3, speak with Vio in Suja and use the pot’s available options to exchange eligible decorations or equipment materials for orbs or specific decorations. Available choices and unlocks can depend on progression; the exact requirements for later melding tiers are not established by the cited guide.

Choose the right decoration for the slot
Weapon and armor decorations use separate pools: a weapon decoration cannot go into an armor slot, and an armor decoration cannot go into a weapon slot. Slot level also matters. A jewel can go into a slot of its own level or higher, so a level 1 decoration can use a level 2 or 3 slot, but a level 3 decoration needs a level 3 slot.
Choose based on three things: whether the slot belongs to a weapon or armor piece, whether its level is high enough, and which skill or skills the jewel grants. Some decorations grant two skills, so compare both effects with your build rather than choosing by rarity alone.

For scale, the unofficial MHWILDSbuild.com decoration database reported 361 decorations across 117 skills—295 weapon decorations and 66 armor decorations—verified September 9, 2026 for Ver. 1.042. Those figures describe that version’s catalog and may change in later updates.

- Speak to Gemma at the Smithy, or enter a tent at a Base Camp or Pop-up Camp.
- Open Equipment Menu, then select Change Equipment.
- Open the decorations menu and choose a weapon or armor slot.
- Select a compatible jewel from the list. The available choices should match the slot’s equipment type and level.
PC Gamer reports that moving decorations on or off equipment is free, so you can rearrange them as your gear and build change.
