Monster Hunter Wilds’ Switch 2 Optimization Was “Painstaking,” Producer Says

Producer Genki Sunano says the Switch 2 version required painstaking, element-by-element optimization. The reported 30 FPS handheld figure is a target, not a retail performance test.

Bringing Monster Hunter Wilds to Nintendo Switch 2 required more than simply lowering graphics settings, producer Genki Sunano says. The team evaluated the game’s assets and underlying processing one by one to decide what to preserve and what to adjust while aiming to keep the experience recognizably Wilds. The reported 30 frames-per-second handheld figure is a development target—including during four-player hunts—not a measurement of the final retail game.

Why did the Switch 2 version take so much optimization?

In a report published October 2, 2026, GamingBolt attributed the comments to Sunano in an interview with Kotaku. He described the work as “painstaking, and at times seemingly endless.” GamingBolt’s report

Sunano said the team wanted the Switch 2 version to deliver a natural Monster Hunter Wilds experience, rather than feel like a straightforward port with graphics or performance merely scaled down. The challenge, as described in the report, was deciding which elements could be adjusted without changing the overall experience. Kotaku interview

What did the team change?

The reported process involved assessing assets and the processing behind individual elements, then making decisions about what to retain and what to modify. GamingBolt also says the team identified opportunities to optimize the game and rebuilt systems with more efficient implementations. The report does not name those systems or quantify the resulting gains, and it does not describe a complete rebuild of the game. GamingBolt’s report

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

That distinction matters: this account describes targeted evaluation and system-level work, not a list of specific visual cuts, technical methods, or measured improvements. Sunano framed the objective as preserving what makes Wilds feel like Wilds while making a comfortable handheld experience possible.

Is 30 FPS in handheld mode confirmed?

GamingBolt reports a 30 FPS target for handheld play, including four-player hunts. That is an attributed development target, not a verified result from testing a final retail build. The report does not provide measured frame-rate stability, resolution, or comparable figures for docked play or other multiplayer conditions. GamingBolt’s report

Rank #2
Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

So the careful answer is: the reported goal is 30 FPS in handheld mode, even during four-player hunts; the available reporting does not establish whether the released game consistently meets that target.

  • What remains unspecified: which particular systems were rebuilt or what gains each optimization delivered.
