Monster Hunter: Wilds was the best-selling game in the United States in February 2025, according to Circana—but the wider video game market was still shrinking. U.S. spending on hardware, content and accessories totaled a projected $4.5 billion, down 6% from February 2024. The game’s chart-topping result was a monthly U.S. dollar-sales ranking, not a measure of its worldwide unit sales.
How did Monster Hunter: Wilds do in February?
Monster Hunter: Wilds ranked first on Circana’s February 2025 U.S. best-selling games chart, ahead of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II in second place and Sid Meier’s Civilization VII in third. The top four games on the chart were new releases. GamesBeat reported that Wilds led sales on PlayStation, Xbox and Steam; Steam accounted for more than half of the game’s total dollar sales, according to that report. GamesBeat’s Circana chart coverage describes the game’s market performance.

Why were video game sales still down?
Circana projected total U.S. spending on video game hardware, content and accessories at $4.5 billion for February 2025, 6% below February 2024. All three categories declined, with hardware falling most sharply.
#1 Best Overall
- Wild New Adventure – Monster Hunter Wilds follows the story of a special Research Commission investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colorful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata. Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
- A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
- New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.
- Players can also now ride atop the Seikret, an agile new mount enabling hunters to traverse difficult terrain, perform actions like sharpening weapons on the move, and switch between two weapons while out on hunts!
- Evolved Hunting Action – The series’ acclaimed action-packed gameplay is back and more exciting than ever! Hunters can look forward to tracking down monsters with an array of new moves, special abilities, equipment, and more. The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.
| U.S. category, February 2025 | Spending | Change year over year |
|---|---|---|
| Total hardware, content and accessories | $4.5 billion | Down 6% |
| Content | $4.0 billion | Down 4% |
| Hardware | $256 million | Down 25% |
| Accessories | $220 million | Down 8% |
Figures are Circana’s projected U.S. spending totals for February 2025 and year-over-year comparisons, as presented in Mat Piscatella’s Circana February 2025 highlights. The category declines explain how a major new release could lead the games chart while the broader market contracted: a top-selling game’s result is not the same measure as total spending across games, devices and accessories.
Hardware was the steepest decline
Hardware spending fell 25% year over year to $256 million. Circana executive producer Mat Piscatella said that was the lowest February hardware-spending total since $184 million in February 2020. Despite the spending decline, PS5 was the month’s best-selling hardware platform in the United States by both units and dollars, according to Circana’s highlights.
Rank #2
- Hunt giant nature-infused bests – Survive their attacks, learn from their behaviors, and use your Karakuri and your weapons in combination to cut these creatures down to size.
- Craft your hunting grounds – You are the only one in Azuma able to wield the Karakuri technology.
- Hunt in a pack, or be a lone wolf – In WILD HEARTS you can face the Kemono alone or unite with up to two friends (or other players) to stalk and hunt your prey.
- Gear up to hunt, hunt to gear up – Create your character, then gather materials from each hunt and build an array of armor and weapons.
What do the later worldwide sales figures show?
Capcom’s global unit milestones provide later context, but they are not comparable one-for-one with Circana’s February U.S. dollar-sales chart. Capcom reported worldwide unit totals; the Circana ranking covers a U.S. month and uses dollar sales. The figures also cover different periods and do not establish identical sales-channel coverage.
| Date or period | Reported result | Source and measure |
|---|---|---|
| Three days after launch | More than 8 million units worldwide | Capcom company announcement; cumulative units |
| By March 31, 2025 | More than 10 million units worldwide | Capcom company announcement; cumulative units |
| April–June 2025 quarter | 477,000 units | GamesRadar+ report based on Capcom quarterly information; quarterly units |
| By March 31, 2026 | 11.4 million units | PC Gamer report; cumulative units |
Capcom said Wilds reached 8 million worldwide units in three days, which it described at the time as the fastest any game in the company’s history had reached that milestone. The company later announced more than 10 million units by March 31, 2025, calling it a record for first-month sales in its history. The company’s announcements cover the three-day milestone and the March 31 milestone.

- Enter the stadium and take part of one of the biggest competitions across 34 sports: from swimming, soccer, extreme bike, weightlifting, trampoline and much more!
- Defend your own country and visit the World: United States, Australia, Japan, France…
- Train yourself alone or compete with your friends!
- An enhanced version of “30 Sport Games in 1”, with revamped design, new games and more customisation!
The later 477,000-unit result belongs to the April–June 2025 quarter, not February’s U.S. chart period. GamesRadar+ reported the quarterly figure from Capcom information and described the company’s sales outlook as soft. Separately, PC Gamer reported 11.4 million units through March 31, 2026, and said Capcom still aimed for Wilds to surpass Monster Hunter: World over the medium to long term. That is a stated objective, not an achieved result.

What the February chart does—and does not—tell you
- It shows a strong U.S. launch-month result: Wilds led Circana’s February 2025 games chart by dollar sales.
- It does not mean the overall market grew: U.S. spending across hardware, content and accessories was down year over year.
- It is not a global unit-sales ranking: Capcom’s worldwide unit announcements use a different geography, metric and time span.
- It does not establish platform-by-platform unit totals: the available chart coverage identifies platform sales leadership but not a complete breakdown of units sold per platform.
