That equipment opens the way to tougher hunts. Iceborne is a separate, paid expansion that continues the game with new quest ranks, locations, monsters, moves, equipment, and story content.
What is Monster Hunter: World?
World is built around a repeating progression loop rather than a traditional level-based power climb. You investigate a target, prepare for the hunt, fight it, gather the materials it drops or leaves behind, and use those materials to craft or improve equipment. Better equipment lets you take on more dangerous monsters, whose materials support the next upgrade.
The result is an action RPG in which learning a monster and improving your gear matter more than simply accumulating experience levels. The base game provides the initial campaign and hunting progression; Iceborne extends that progression after the base-game content.
How the hunting and crafting loop works
- Track a monster: Locate the target and follow the investigation toward a hunt.
- Prepare: Choose equipment and supplies suited to the quest and the monster you intend to fight.
- Hunt: Read the monster’s behavior, create openings, and survive the encounter long enough to complete the quest.
- Gather materials: Collect the rewards and other materials associated with the hunt.
- Craft and upgrade: Spend those materials on weapons and armor that improve your ability to handle stronger targets.
- Advance: Use the new equipment to pursue the next tier of monsters and quests.
This loop is the core of both World and its expansion. If you enjoy preparation, pattern recognition, and gradual equipment improvement, it is the system the game asks you to engage with repeatedly.

- Contains both Monster Hunter: World and the Iceborne expansion
- Explore sprawling locales teeming with undiscovered creatures and thriving ecosystems
- Battle fearsome monsters not only to craft new weapons & armor, but also to drive the story forward and uncover the mysteries of the New World and Hoarfrost Reach
- Extensive single-player campaign that also allows drop-in multiplayer; use the SOS Flare to summon other hunters for an assist!
- Use monster materials, as well as items found growing in the wild, to craft new items and gear
What does Iceborne add?
Iceborne is a substantial paid expansion, not a cosmetic add-on. It adds new quest ranks, locales, monsters, weapon moves, gear, and a continuing story. Its content is designed to follow the base game’s progression, so it functions as the next stage of the same hunt-and-craft journey.
Do you need World before Iceborne?
Yes, unless you buy a package that already contains both products. A standalone Iceborne purchase is intended for players who already own Monster Hunter: World. The Iceborne Master Edition bundles the base game and the expansion for new buyers who want the complete package.

Which edition should you buy?
| Listing | Includes | Best for | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monster Hunter: World base game | World only | Players who want to start with the original campaign | Iceborne is not included |
| Standalone Iceborne | Iceborne expansion only | Players who already own World on the same platform | Requires the base game |
| Iceborne Master Edition | Monster Hunter: World plus Iceborne | New players seeking the complete package | Confirm platform, region, and current listing contents |
A practical buying checklist
- Confirm the platform: PlayStation, Xbox, or PC.
- Read the contents line to see whether the base game is included.
- Check that a standalone Iceborne listing matches an account that already owns World.
- Verify region compatibility for physical copies and downloadable content.
- Check current stock and the store’s edition name, since listings can change.
For someone starting from nothing, Master Edition is the clearest complete-package choice because it combines World and Iceborne. If you already own World, the standalone expansion is the relevant upgrade.
How large is the game’s audience?
Capcom reported more than 10 million Monster Hunter: World units shipped by September 30, 2018. The company reported 15 million World units shipped as of January 2, 2020, and 4 million Monster Hunter World: Iceborne units shipped in 2020. These are Capcom shipment figures, not a live player count or a guarantee of current online activity.
