Monster Train 2 is a single-player deckbuilding roguelike about defending your Pyre Heart across three vertical train floors. For a first run, focus on how units, spells, rooms, and equipment work together—not on finding a supposedly perfect build. You can start with Monster Train 2 even if you have never played the original.
12 beginner tips for Monster Train 2
1. Learn the three-floor objective before chasing upgrades
Your goal is to defend the Pyre Heart while enemies move through the train’s three floors. When considering a card or upgrade, ask how it helps protect the heart: does it strengthen a floor, help units contribute elsewhere, or address a threat your current setup struggles with?
2. Use the Deployment Phase to plan ahead
During the Deployment Phase, you can play unit cards one turn before enemies spawn on the first floor. It also gives you bonus Ember. Shiny Shoe says the phase was added to support multi-floor strategies and unit synergy. Use the extra time to consider where units will contribute and how their abilities might work together, rather than spending resources without a plan.
3. Read a clan’s strengths before drafting around it
Monster Train 2 launched with five new clans: Banished, Pyreborne, Lazarus League, Luna Coven, and Underlegion. The official game listing describes clans as having unique strengths, but does not establish an overall strongest clan. Read the cards and mechanics available to you, then choose options that make sense for that run.

4. Choose cards that support a clear plan, then adapt
A useful beginner approach is to notice what your deck is already doing well and look for cards that support it. If a new card offers a different direction, weigh that against the units and spells you already have. This is a decision-making aid, not a fixed drafting rule: the right choice depends on your current deck and the defense your run needs.
5. Know whether a card improves a room or a unit
Room Cards boost the train, while Equipment Cards apply bonuses to units. Before choosing one, identify what you want to improve: the space where a fight happens or a particular unit. The distinction helps you compare unlike effects without assuming that one card type is always better.

6. Use turn undo to learn sequencing
The battle undo feature returns the battle to the beginning of the current turn. If you want to understand how the order of your actions affects a fight, try undoing and making a different sequence. Shiny Shoe’s FAQ describes the feature as a way to use your turn wisely.
7. Restart a battle for a clean attempt
If you want to replay the battle rather than revise actions within the current turn, use the full battle restart option in the gear menu during battle. This is separate from undo, which only resets to the start of the current turn.

8. Check the Logbook for enemy information
The Logbook includes enemy information and collection objectives. Use it to review what you have encountered and build familiarity with enemy types between fights, instead of relying on memory alone.
9. Start with Monster Train 2 even if you missed the original
You do not need to play the first Monster Train to begin the sequel. ShinyCami, a Shiny Shoe community manager, says in the developer FAQ: “Monster Train 2 can be played without ever having played the first game.”

10. Try alternate modes once you understand a normal run
The game offers Endless Mode, Daily Challenges, and handcrafted Dimensional Challenges. A standard run can help you get used to the core loop before you explore these alternatives; that order is a beginner-friendly suggestion, not a required progression path.
11. Evaluate event choices in the context of your run
Celestial Alcoves are random events. Consider what an option offers and whether it helps your current setup before choosing it. Treating every event as an automatic reward can obscure the trade-offs in the choices presented.

12. Review what worked instead of chasing a universal build
Use each run to notice which choices helped your defense and which left a gap. The Logbook’s enemy information and collection objectives give you a place to track discoveries. Official materials describe clan strengths, but do not rank clans or establish a universally strongest build.

When two options compete, compare them using the details that matter to your current situation:
- Mechanic: What does the card or clan ability actually do?
- Fit: Does it work with the units and cards already in your deck?
- Target: Does it boost the train or a unit?
- Defense: How could it help protect the Pyre Heart across the three floors?
For a specific example, Underlegion mechanics include Spawn, which can create a unit in response to a trigger such as using a spell. The clan’s developer introduction also describes Decay as dealing 3 damage per stack at the end of the turn, and Propagate as increasing effects including Valor, Troop, and Decay. These are Underlegion-specific examples, not rules that apply to every clan.
