Monster Train 2 keeps the original’s three-floor train defense at its core, then builds on it with five clans, room and equipment cards, and a phase for positioning units before enemies arrive. It is a standalone roguelike deckbuilder, so newcomers do not need to play the first game. The additions give players more ways to shape a run, though whether that added complexity improves the experience—and whether the game suits you—depends on how clearly its systems and difficulty work for you.
What is Monster Train 2?
Developed by Shiny Shoe and published by Big Fan Games, Monster Train 2 launched on May 21, 2025. It is a single-player roguelike deckbuilder in which you defend a Pyre Heart across three floors of a train. Each run asks you to assemble a deck and use it to answer incoming enemy threats across those levels. Steam’s listing describes the core premise and identifies single-player support.
The sequel retains that recognizable structure rather than replacing it with a different genre or format. Its new systems broaden the decisions players can make around the fight: the timing of unit placement, the rooms enemies encounter, and the equipment available to your forces.
What’s new in Monster Train 2?
Five clans offer new combinations
The five launch clans are Banished, Pyreborne, Lazarus League, Luna Coven, and Underlegion, according to Shiny Shoe’s Steam FAQ and the launch announcement. Clans shape the tools available to a run, so the new options expand the combinations players can explore. The available information establishes the added clans, not a guaranteed level of balance or replayability.

Deployment Phase changes when you position units
The developer lists a Deployment Phase before enemies arrive. That gives players a dedicated pre-combat opportunity to position their forces across the train’s floors, making setup an explicit part of the sequence rather than simply reacting once a wave is underway.
Equipment and Train Room cards add deck-building choices
Equipment and Train Room cards are among the sequel’s additions. They extend the decisions around how a run is configured, complementing the existing unit and spell choices. Whether these options feel meaningfully distinct in play is a matter for hands-on evaluation; their presence alone does not establish how often a particular strategy will work.
More ways to play beyond a standard run
Shiny Shoe identifies Endless Mode, Daily Challenges, handcrafted Dimensional Challenges, unlockable Pyrehearts, and character dialogue among the sequel’s features. These provide different ways to engage with the game, from challenge-focused play to longer or more varied runs. “Eternally replayable,” by contrast, is promotional language from the developer, not a measured finding.

Do you need to play the first Monster Train?
No. Shiny Shoe explicitly says in its June 5, 2025 Steam FAQ that the sequel can be played without having played the original. The returning three-floor defense concept gives the game continuity with its predecessor, but the developer does not list prior knowledge as a requirement.

At the time of the cited Steam snapshot, the store showed 95% positive from 5,030 English-language reviews and an 87 Metacritic score. The figures appear on the Steam store page; the Steam percentage and review count are volatile and should be checked there for the current totals. Devolver Digital’s FY25 investor presentation also reported 95% Overwhelmingly Positive Steam user reviews and reproduced IGN’s short description, “A fantastic upgrade.”
Those reception signals indicate a positive snapshot, not whether the game’s difficulty, pacing, balance, interface, or performance will suit a particular player. They cannot substitute for a hands-on judgment of those qualities.
Best Value
Is Monster Train 2 worth it?
It is a natural choice for players who want a single-player deckbuilder built around tactical decisions on multiple combat floors, and it is accessible as a starting point for people who missed the original. The sequel’s new clans, pre-enemy deployment, and room and equipment cards expand the range of systems to engage with; its challenge modes and post-launch content add further options. The cited sources do not establish how well those additions are balanced or how clear and accessible they feel in practice, so weigh that uncertainty against your own interest in learning a layered roguelike.
For current pricing, bundles, and digital add-ons, use the store for your platform and region. The publisher’s $24.99 figure was the historical launch price, not a current quote. The Steam catalog currently lists Destiny of the Railforged, a soundtrack, and a Digital Compendium as digital add-ons; the publisher described the soundtrack and compendium as digital contents in its supporter bundle. Check Steam for its current catalog and price, or consult your platform’s store for regional availability.
