What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The monthly electricity cost depends on the Wyse model’s actual average power draw at the wall and your electricity rate. For a 30-day month, calculate it as average watts × 720 ÷ 1,000 × your price per kWh. As an illustration—not a measured streaming result—Dell’s 3.3 W idle figure for the Wyse 3040 would equal about 2.376 kWh and $0.41 at the 2025 U.S. residential average rate of 17.30 cents/kWh.
Calculate the electricity cost for your setup
Use these two steps:
- Monthly energy (kWh) = average power (watts) × hours per day × days ÷ 1,000.
- Monthly electricity cost = monthly energy (kWh) × your electricity price per kWh.
For continuous operation over 30 days, the computer runs for 720 hours, so monthly energy is average watts × 720 ÷ 1,000. Use the price per kWh from your own bill or tariff; a national average is only an illustration.
Example: Dell Wyse 3040 idle figure
Dell Technologies says the Wyse 3040 consumes 3.3 W in idle state. If—and only if—that were the system’s actual average wall draw during the stream, it would use 3.3 × 720 ÷ 1,000 = 2.376 kWh in 30 days. At the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2025 annual residential average of 17.30 cents/kWh, that energy would cost about $0.41. EIA marks its 2025 values preliminary. This is arithmetic using an idle specification, not a Dell or independent measurement of YouTube playback.
Your bill may also reflect taxes, fixed charges, time-of-use rates, or other tariff details. Apply the variable energy rate that fits your billing structure, and include fixed charges only if you want to attribute them to this device.

Why the Wyse model and workload matter
“Dell Wyse” covers different thin clients and configurations. The available published figures are not a controlled comparison of models running the same YouTube workload, so they cannot establish a typical 24/7 streaming cost.
Wyse 5070 figures are not a streaming benchmark
Dell’s Wyse 5070 PCF datasheet lists 41.84 kWh yearly TEC. The datasheet’s modeled figure assumes a two-year product lifetime and EU use location; the year of the datasheet is not stated in the available excerpt. TEC is not a direct measurement of an always-on YouTube stream, nor a substitute for measuring your particular unit at the wall.

Adapter capacity is not power consumption
Dell’s Wyse 5070 guide specifies a 130 W AC adapter. That is the adapter’s rated capacity, not the computer’s constant draw. Multiplying 130 W by 720 hours would treat the maximum adapter rating as measured use and substantially misstate the calculation.
Measure the actual always-on setup
- Connect the Wyse system to a plug-in electricity meter or watt meter, following the meter’s instructions. This tool is optional, but it can provide a better estimate than an idle specification.
- Measure the computer at the wall while it is doing the work you intend to leave running, including the YouTube playback or streaming setup. Let the reading settle and observe it over a representative period rather than relying on a brief peak or a single moment.
- Use the measured average watts in the monthly formula, then multiply by your local electricity price per kWh.
- Decide what belongs in the estimate. Measure or calculate displays, speakers, network equipment, and other always-on devices separately if they are part of the setup. Keep internet charges and paid services separate from electricity cost.
For a fair comparison between estimates, keep four things consistent: exact Wyse model and configuration, average wall draw under the intended workload, local all-in energy price and billing structure, and which other devices or services are included.

Or let the YouTube stream run in the cloud
A Wyse setup keeps hardware and its internet connection running locally; StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. StreamNeo plays the uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera, and streams to YouTube only.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; uploads stream as made, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required; one free day per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. That is a service price, not an electricity estimate; compare it with your measured hardware costs and the value of not keeping a local computer running. See StreamNeo or its pricing page. To try it, start the free first day.
