To estimate the electricity cost, multiply the PC’s average power draw at the wall by the hours it runs, then by your applicable electricity rate. For a 30-day month, every sustained watt uses 0.72 kWh: at an illustrative 65 W, that is 46.8 kWh. Using the Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 comparison endpoints gives an energy-charge illustration of about ₹55–₹416 for those 46.8 kWh—but it is not a quote for your household or a measured gaming-PC result.
Calculate the monthly energy use
Use the average wall draw of the equipment you intend to leave running—not the wattage printed on the PC’s power supply. For a 30-day month:
Monthly kWh = average watts × 24 hours × 30 days ÷ 1,000
Equivalently, multiply average watts by 0.72. Each additional 10 W sustained around the clock adds 7.2 kWh in a 30-day month.

These are arithmetic examples using assumed inputs, not readings from specific computers. For a different billing period, replace 30 days with the actual number of days. If you measure average watts over time, use that average in the formula.
Turn kWh into an India electricity-cost estimate
Multiply the calculated kWh by the applicable rate for the additional units. India does not have one household electricity price that applies to every consumer. The Ministry of Power says, “Electricity tariffs in India are determined by the Appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions under the Electricity Act, 2003.” State commissions set retail tariffs, and state governments may subsidize domestic consumers. The Ministry of Power’s 10 August 2026 release explains the tariff-setting and subsidy framework.

The Central Electricity Authority’s Electricity Tariff & Duty and Average Rates of Electricity Supply in India (2025) reports effective domestic rates from 118 paise/kWh in Tamil Nadu to 888 paise/kWh for Maharashtra–Mumbai (TATA), under a comparison assumption of 1 kW sanctioned load and 100 units per month. Applied to the illustrative 46.8 kWh, those endpoints produce energy charges of ₹55.22 and ₹415.58, or roughly ₹55–₹416 when rounded. They are a calculation from that example and those comparison rates—not a national bill range, a personalized quote, or a published measurement of streaming-PC costs.
For your estimate, check your latest bill or your state utility’s applicable tariff order. Consider the marginal slab rate for the extra units: a PC’s use may move total household consumption into a higher slab, so multiplying by an average bill rate can misstate the incremental cost. The energy calculation also excludes any fixed charges, taxes, subsidies, duties, or bill adjustments not specifically included in the rate you use.

Why 65 W is only an illustration
The 65 W example is not a contemporary gaming-PC benchmark. The International Energy Agency’s 2009 report, Gadgets and Gigawatts: Policies for Energy-Efficient Electronics, lists 65 W for a desktop PC at idle and 32 W for an idle monitor in an illustrative mode table (97 W combined). That historical, generalized example does not establish how much a modern gaming desktop uses while a YouTube stream is running.
Actual draw depends on the particular PC and what is running. A stream may involve encoding, browser playback, network upload, background services, a display and peripherals. The available evidence does not establish a single wattage for those factors. Measure your own setup rather than treating 65 W—or the combined PC-and-monitor figure—as a dependable prediction.

Measure the setup you will actually leave running
- Choose what you are estimating. To estimate the tower alone, measure the PC alone. To estimate the whole setup, include the monitor and the peripherals you plan to leave on, and note what is included.
- Re-create the intended operating state. Run the apps and stream as you expect to use them; set the display and peripherals to the state they will actually remain in. A reading taken with a different workload or display state may not represent the 24/7 setup.
- Measure at the wall over time. A plug-in electricity usage monitor or watt meter can provide whole-system AC input readings. If the draw fluctuates, average a measurement over a representative period. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program advises that fluctuating power consumption should be measured over a period and divided by that period to determine average power; see “Measuring Standby Power.”
- Calculate energy and cost. Put the measured average watts into the monthly kWh formula, then multiply by the applicable marginal electricity rate. A meter helps establish the input for the calculation; it does not itself reduce consumption.
Power management and continuous streaming
ENERGY STAR’s computer guidance covers efficiency in modes such as Off, Sleep and Idle and the use of power-management features. A PC entering sleep will interrupt a stream that depends on it. If uninterrupted streaming is unnecessary during planned downtime, consider whether the computer can be off or use power management then; no specific savings amount can be promised for an individual gaming setup.
