Hay Day launched globally on June 21, 2012, and Supercell says it has continued to attract millions of daily players and generate more than $2 billion in lifetime revenue. Those figures came from the company’s 2023 account of the game’s tenth anniversary—not a current player count. In June 2026, Supercell described a larger team rebuilding parts of the game, including its onboarding, after a period it called “basically maintenance mode.”
When did Hay Day come out?
Supercell says Hay Day began as a farming game codenamed Soil. Its beta went live in Canada in May 2012, followed by a global launch on June 21, 2012. It was the company’s first mobile game released globally, not its first game ever: Supercell identifies Gunshine.net as its first game. The company says Hay Day was designed for touch and mobile, with particular attention to its interface and real-time player trading. Supercell’s company history outlines that early development.
Is Hay Day still popular?
Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen wrote in 2023 that Hay Day and Clash of Clans had marked their tenth anniversaries in 2022 and that millions of people still played them every day. He also said Hay Day had exceeded $2 billion in lifetime revenue. These are company-reported figures tied to the anniversary period, not independently verified measurements or a current 2026 player count. Supercell’s 2023 account does not provide a newer Hay Day player figure.
The distinction matters: the company’s 2026 account focuses on development and staffing, not a fresh audience statistic. It says the game’s team grew from a few people during what it described as “basically maintenance mode” to more than 60. Team size indicates renewed investment, but it is not a measure of how many people play. Supercell’s June 18, 2026 feature describes that shift.

What keeps Hay Day engaging beyond the farm?
The basic appeal remains farming, but Hay Day’s official descriptions present it as a broader social game. Players grow crops, care for animals, make goods, and buy and sell items; the game also includes player trading, neighborhoods, Derby competition, Global Community Events, Town, Fishing, and Valley play. The additional activities give players options beyond tending fields and waiting for production. Supercell’s game page and the official Hay Day site describe these features.
Its gentle framing is part of the design: Supercell says crops do not die and animals do not die. That makes the farming loop less punishing than a simulation where missed check-ins can permanently cost players crops or livestock. It is a stated design promise, not a claim that every task or production timer is instant.

What has changed in the game’s development?
In its 2026 feature, Supercell said the Hay Day team had grown to more than 60 after a period with only a few people working on the game. The company said the team rebuilt onboarding and made more changes across the game than it had expected. This is Supercell’s account of its own staffing and development work; it does not establish how those changes affected retention or player numbers.
The stated changes suggest the game is being actively revisited rather than simply left in its earlier state. The available company account identifies onboarding and broader rebuilding, but does not enumerate every change or give a before-and-after engagement result.
