moricons.dll Not Found: Trace the Windows Icon Library

moricons.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows system file, not a game-specific runtime that you should download from a DLL archive. If Windows or an older program reports that moricons.dll is missing, repair the Windows component first, then investigate the application making the request.

What this file actually does

The full description of moricons.dll is Windows NT Setup Icon Resources Library. It belongs to Microsoft Windows and is published by Microsoft Corporation.

Despite the .dll extension, this is primarily a resource library. It supplies icons and related resources used by Windows components, historically including Windows Setup and MS-DOS application icons. A resource-only DLL can contain icons, strings, dialogs, and other packaged resources without functioning like a normal application-code library.

Microsoft’s current Windows Shell Accessories package documentation lists the file here:

%windir%System32moricons.dll

The same package also includes the related modern resource file:

%windir%SystemResourcesmoricons.dll.mun

You can verify the expected location by opening File Explorer, entering %windir%System32 in the address bar, and looking for moricons.dll. On a typical installation, %windir% resolves to the Windows folder, usually C:Windows.

Do not assume that every Windows release or customized Windows image contains identical copies. Historical inventories include versions such as 10.0.14393.0, 10.0.10586.0, 6.3.9600.16384, 6.2.9200.16384, 6.1.7600.16385, and 6.0.6000.16386, in 32-bit and 64-bit variants depending on the release. Those values are historical references, not a universal version rule.

Causes and symptoms at a glance

What you see Most likely explanation Best first action
Windows reports the file is missing after an update or cleanup A protected Windows component was removed or damaged Run Windows Update, DISM, then SFC
Defender or another security product detected the file The file may be quarantined, modified, or falsely identified Check Protection history and verify the file before restoring it
One old application fails but Windows works normally The application may be obsolete or requesting the resource incorrectly Repair or reinstall that application
The message says the file was not found, but the file exists Search-path, permissions, corruption, or application-loader problem Check the file location, signature, event logs, and application
“Not designed to run on Windows” appears The file may be corrupt, incompatible, or replaced with a bad copy Remove the untrusted copy and repair Windows
The file repeatedly disappears Malware, antivirus action, disk problems, or unauthorized modification may be involved Scan the system and check storage health
regsvr32 moricons.dll fails This resource DLL normally has no registration entry point Do not register it; use Windows component repair instead

The error text does not prove that the file is simply absent. Windows loaders can produce similar messages when a file is damaged, incompatible, in the wrong location, inaccessible, or requested incorrectly by an application.

Common messages include:

  • “The program can’t start because moricons.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because moricons.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting moricons.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “moricons.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

Note that the last message can refer to corruption or an incompatible binary. It does not automatically mean another runtime, graphics driver, or Visual C++ package is missing.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Windows servicing is the safest first repair because Microsoft distributes this file as part of Windows rather than as a standalone application dependency.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. On Windows 10, open Update & Security > Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  7. Try the affected program again.

If the error began after an interrupted update, restart once before running repair commands. A pending reboot can leave system components in an incomplete servicing state.

How to tell whether this worked

The fix worked if the program starts without the error and the file remains present at %windir%System32moricons.dll. If the same message returns, continue with DISM and SFC rather than copying a replacement file from the internet.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected files. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a usable repair source is available. Run DISM first.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
  2. When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application again.

The commands operate on the currently running Windows installation. They do not target a separate recovery partition or another disk.

What the results mean

SFC may report one of several useful outcomes:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files were not detected as damaged. The problem may be application-specific, a search-path issue, or a file that is present but incompatible.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the program again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, confirm it completed successfully, and then rerun SFC. If it still fails, inspect the CBS log and use a matching Windows repair source.
  • DISM cannot use Windows Update as the repair source: provide installation media or another repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and build.

For a matching repair source located at C:RepairSourceWindows, Microsoft documents this form:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Do not substitute an arbitrary Windows folder from another computer. A repair source must correspond to the installed edition and build. Using the wrong source can leave the component store in a worse state or simply fail to repair the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you are repeatedly hunting through Windows versions and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing the problems it identifies; the repair is performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this Windows repair.

How to tell whether this worked

Check %windir%System32 again and confirm that moricons.dll is present. Right-click it, select Properties, and review the Digital Signatures tab if it is available. The signer should be Microsoft-related, and the location should be inside the Windows directory.

A successful SFC result does not guarantee that every application will immediately work. If Windows repairs the file but one old program still fails, move to the application-specific checks below.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything

Security software can quarantine or remove a system file. It can also report a modified or suspicious copy. Do not restore a file merely because its filename looks familiar.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Select Windows Security.
  4. Open Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections and quarantined items.
  7. Expand an item only if it clearly corresponds to moricons.dll.
  8. Compare its path with the expected Windows location and check the file’s signature when possible.

If Defender identifies a quarantined file and you have independently verified that it is the genuine Windows file, the available action may include Restore. Depending on the detection, Windows Security may also offer Allow on device. Do not use that option for a copy outside the Windows directory, an unsigned file, or a file that has not been verified.

After a legitimate restoration:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Run the DISM and SFC sequence.
  3. Run a full security scan.
  4. Test the original program.

If the file is repeatedly quarantined, stop restoring it blindly. The copy may be modified, or the system may have a broader malware or disk-integrity problem.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the program that reports the error

If Windows itself operates normally and only one old program shows the error, the application may be the real problem. moricons.dll ships with Windows; there is no verified basis for treating it as a game’s private redistributable.

First identify the exact caller:

  1. Write down the application name and complete error text.
  2. Check whether the error appears only when launching that application.
  3. Open Event Viewer by searching for it from Start.
  4. Review Windows Logs > Application for an error at the same time.
  5. Check the application’s own logs or launcher diagnostics if available.

Then repair the program:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select the affected application.
  3. Choose Advanced options if available.
  4. Select Repair or Reset when offered.
  5. If those options are unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the program.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Reinstall it using the original installer, its official launcher, or the publisher’s supported installation method.

For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function if available. This repairs the game’s own files without treating moricons.dll as a game-owned DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application is very old, compatibility may be the issue. Right-click its executable, choose Properties > Compatibility, and test an appropriate compatibility setting only if the program’s documentation or behavior supports it. Do not copy moricons.dll into the game directory as a workaround.

How to tell whether this worked

The application should launch without the error while other Windows programs continue to work normally. If reinstalling the program changes nothing, record the exact executable named in Event Viewer and check whether the application is designed for the Windows version you are running.

Fix 5: Verify the file’s location, signature, and architecture

A file named moricons.dll is not automatically trustworthy. The location and signature matter.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Enter %windir%System32 in the address bar.
  3. Find moricons.dll.
  4. Right-click it and select Properties.
  5. Review the Details tab for the description and publisher.
  6. Review Digital Signatures if present.
  7. Use Signature Details to check whether Windows considers the signature valid.

The expected Microsoft package location documented for this component is %windir%System32moricons.dll. Do not assume that every Windows release has a matching copy in SysWOW64; the specific build must be checked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the normal location for 64-bit system files, despite the historical name. A 32-bit application has its own Windows compatibility and redirection rules. Do not replace a system file with a random 32-bit or 64-bit copy based only on the application that displays the error.

If the file exists but the error remains

An existing file can still be damaged or incompatible. Check:

  • Whether the application is loading a different copy from another directory.
  • Whether the file is signed and located under the Windows directory.
  • Whether the application is old and making an invalid request.
  • Whether Windows reports broader integrity problems.
  • Whether Event Viewer names a different module than moricons.dll.

Do not choose the highest-numbered DLL version simply because it appears newer. Windows files are tied to the installed build.

Fix 6: Check Windows Features only when the application needs one

No standard Windows Feature is established as the normal installation source for moricons.dll. Do not turn random features on or off while troubleshooting this file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Features can still matter if the affected application separately requires an optional Windows component. To check:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Features.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Review the feature named by the application’s documentation or error log.
  5. Apply only a relevant change.
  6. Restart if Windows requests it.
  7. Test the application again.

Enabling legacy components will not normally restore a missing Windows system file. DISM and SFC are the appropriate tools for protected component repair.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the symptoms point to drivers

A graphics-driver reinstall is not the normal fix for moricons.dll. This file is a Windows icon/resource library, and there is no evidence that it belongs to a graphics runtime.

Driver work becomes reasonable when you also have display corruption, device errors, crashes, or a problem that began immediately after a driver change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters and inspect the graphics device.
  4. Also check any category showing a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
  6. Review the General tab and Device status.
  7. Open the Driver tab to see the available update, rollback, and uninstall options.

Use Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates when a suitable driver is offered. For graphics hardware, use the official hardware manufacturer’s support channel when Windows Update does not provide the correct package.

If a driver update clearly caused the problem, open Device Manager, select the device, choose Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when available, and restart. Do not remove unrelated drivers just because a DLL error appears.

When manually identifying stale hardware drivers is taking time, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the drivers it identifies; installation is handled by the full version, but updating a driver is not a substitute for repairing Windows when moricons.dll itself is damaged.

How to tell whether this worked

The device should have no warning icon, the related hardware symptoms should stop, and the original application should still be tested separately. If only the DLL message remains, return to Windows component repair and application diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Use Windows 11 repair reinstall or System Restore

If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, Windows 11 offers a repair reinstall on eligible systems:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Recovery.
  3. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  4. Select Reinstall now.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. Keep the computer connected to power and connected to the internet while the process runs.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings, subject to Microsoft’s eligibility requirements.

System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a known update, driver, application installation, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists:

  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  6. Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files. It does not replace a backup, and it cannot help if no suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For severe corruption or suspected malware, back up personal data and use Microsoft’s supported Windows installation-media recovery route. This is more disruptive than DISM, SFC, or System Restore, so reserve it for cases where ordinary repair does not work.

Do not download or register moricons.dll

Avoid DLL download sites sites and random file mirrors. A downloaded copy can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, language, or digital signature. It may also be modified, and placing it beside a game executable can cause the program to load the wrong file. Even a genuine file may not fix the underlying component-store corruption or application bug.

Do not use:

regsvr32 moricons.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLL components that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A resource-only icon library is not normally registered that way. The command will not restore a missing Windows file and may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found.

Manual replacement is justified only as a controlled last resort after identifying the exact damaged file and obtaining a known-good copy that matches the installed Windows build and architecture. In most cases, DISM, SFC, a repair reinstall, or System Restore is safer.

FAQ

Is moricons.dll a legitimate file?

Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component named Windows NT Setup Icon Resources Library. Its expected documented location is %windir%System32moricons.dll.

Does it belong to a particular game?

No verified evidence identifies it as a game-owned DLL. A game or older application may reference or load the Windows resource, but the file itself ships with Windows.

Should I copy it into the game folder?

No. That can make the application load a mismatched or tampered copy and does not repair Windows. Verify or reinstall the game through its official launcher instead.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Those packages are not the normal repair for moricons.dll. Install another runtime only when the application’s own documentation or a separate error specifically identifies that runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is moricons.dll always in SysWOW64 too?

Do not assume that. Microsoft’s current package documentation confirms the System32 location, while the available evidence does not establish a universal SysWOW64 copy for every Windows version.

What if SFC says it repaired the file but the error remains?

Restart first, then check the file’s location and signature. If only one application still fails, repair or reinstall that application and inspect Event Viewer to identify the actual calling executable or module.

What if the file keeps disappearing?

Review antivirus Protection history, run a full security scan, and check for disk or filesystem problems. Repeated disappearance can indicate quarantine, malware, unauthorized modification, or storage failure.

Can I use a historical version number to choose a replacement?

No. Historical inventories can help identify that multiple builds exist, but the correct file is tied to the installed Windows build and architecture. Let Windows repair its own protected component whenever possible.
