The studio said balance adjustments and fixes would continue as it shifted its focus to its next project. A claim that poor sales of the Khaos Reigns expansion prompted the change had been reported months earlier, attributed to an online leaker; the studio has not publicly confirmed that explanation.
What NetherRealm confirmed
In a statement reported by GamesRadar on May 23, 2025, NetherRealm said it would continue supporting the game with balance adjustments and fixes, but would release no additional DLC characters or story chapters. The studio said its team needed to shift focus to its next project.

This confirms the end of new character and story content. It does not say that all support for the game has ended, nor does it give poor sales as the reason for ending DLC.
Why reports linked the decision to Khaos Reigns sales
In November 2024, Nintendo Life reported that online leaker Fate Unknown claimed NetherRealm had dropped plans for a second story expansion and a third Kombat Pack, citing poor sales of Khaos Reigns as a factor.

That was an attributed report, not an official announcement. The reporting cited here does not provide a public sales figure for Khaos Reigns or confirmation from Warner Bros. Games or NetherRealm that sales caused the plans to change. The later studio statement confirmed what content would stop, but did not validate the earlier explanation.
How the announcements fit together
| Date | What was announced or reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| July 26, 2024 | Warner Bros. Games announced Khaos Reigns, a cinematic story expansion with Kombat Pack 2 and six playable fighters. The launch-era suggested retail prices were $49.99 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and $39.99 for Nintendo Switch. | The expansion’s announced contents and original suggested prices—not its sales performance or current price. |
| November 2024 | Nintendo Life reported Fate Unknown’s claim that a second story expansion and third Kombat Pack had been dropped, with poor Khaos Reigns sales cited as a factor. | An attributed leak report, not official confirmation of the plans or the stated cause. |
| May 14, 2025 | Warner Bros. Games announced Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, bundling the base game with released content including Khaos Reigns, Kombat Pack and Kombat Pack 2. | The contents bundled in that edition; it does not establish why future DLC ended. |
| May 23, 2025 | NetherRealm confirmed no further DLC characters or story chapters, while saying balance adjustments and fixes would continue. | The official end of new character and story DLC, and the studio’s stated plan to keep making fixes and balance changes. |
What is known about sales—and what is not
Warner Bros. Games said in its Definitive Edition announcement that the Mortal Kombat franchise had sold more than 100 million units worldwide. That is a franchise-wide total, not a sales figure for Mortal Kombat 1 or Khaos Reigns, and it cannot establish the expansion’s performance.

The studio’s public statement gives a different explanation for its next step: NetherRealm needed to shift focus to its next project. It does not say that sales played no role; it simply does not identify them as the cause. The sales-based explanation therefore remains an attributed report rather than a confirmed fact.

The announced launch suggested retail prices were $49.99 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and $39.99 on Nintendo Switch. These are 2024 announcement-era prices, not a statement of current offers. Warner Bros. later listed Khaos Reigns among the previously released content included in Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition; the announcement confirms that bundle’s contents, not the reason new DLC stopped.
