Mortal Kombat Trilogy: The 1996 Home Release That United MK1, MK2 and MK3

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy was Midway’s 1996 home-game update to Mortal Kombat 3, bringing back characters and stages from the first two Mortal Kombat games. It was not three complete arcade games bundled together: it built on the MK3/Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 foundation, adding a broad series roster, the Aggressor bar and new finishing moves. The exact roster and release timing varied by platform.

What was Mortal Kombat Trilogy?

Midway released Mortal Kombat Trilogy in 1996 as the second and final update to Mortal Kombat 3, according to GOG’s August 15, 2022 announcement. It carried forward the later game’s core while restoring characters and stages from Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II. The result gathered material from the series’ early arcade era into one home release; it did not present the three original arcade games as separate complete titles.

A series retrospective describes Trilogy as building on Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and as the franchise’s first title to skip an arcade release. That distinction matters: Trilogy’s name points to its cross-series content, not an arcade compilation format.

What did Trilogy add?

Returning characters and stages

The main draw was the return of fighters and stages from the first two games alongside the MK3-era foundation. This made the home game a wider meeting point for early-series characters than its immediate predecessor.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The Aggressor bar and finishing moves

Trilogy also introduced the Aggressor bar and new finishing moves. These additions gave the update mechanics and end-of-match content of its own, rather than making it only a roster-and-stage restoration.

How did the platform versions differ?

Trilogy appeared on several home platforms, but the editions were not identical. A specialist platform reference reports these standard playable roster counts and platform dates; dates here reflect that reference and should not be treated as a single worldwide launch schedule.

Platform Standard playable roster reported Platform date reported Edition note
PlayStation 32 characters December 1996 Hidden-character details vary by edition; see the platform reference.
PC 32 characters 1997 Hidden-character details vary by edition; see the platform reference.
Sega Saturn 32 characters August 31, 1997 Hidden-character details vary by edition; see the platform reference.
Nintendo 64 26 characters October 31, 1996 Had a smaller standard roster and different hidden characters; the broader version overview documents further omissions and version-specific content.

These counts and dates are reference-specific. Another overview gives a different North American PlayStation day and distinguishes regional and platform launches, so December 1996 is a safer summary than treating one exact PlayStation date as universal. The available accounts establish meaningful edition differences, but they do not make every version interchangeable.

  • For roster size: The cited platform reference lists 32 standard playable characters on PlayStation, PC and Saturn, compared with 26 on Nintendo 64. Treat this as a reported version detail, not proof that every other feature is the same across those editions.

Why the “30 years ago” framing needs a date check

The game’s original release year was 1996, so its 30th anniversary falls in 2026. The platform chronology is less tidy: the cited reference places Nintendo 64 in October 1996, PlayStation in December 1996, PC in 1997 and Saturn in August 1997. Regional launches and competing reference dates complicate any single day claim. Calling Trilogy a 1996 release is accurate at the broad level; naming a platform and date requires that qualification.
