Mortal Shell is a compact, demanding action RPG for players who want a Soulslike built around deliberate combat and a ruined world to explore. It remains worth considering if that is what you want—but edition names and included content vary by platform, so check what you are buying before you pay.

Its basic premise is distinctive: you take control of a vulnerable, nameless figure and inhabit the bodies, or “Shells,” of fallen warriors. That framework gives the game its identity, while its combat asks for patience rather than constant aggression. The appeal is strongest for players who enjoy learning enemy behavior, exploring hostile environments and making careful choices under pressure.
Is Mortal Shell worth playing?
If you want a focused Soulslike rather than a huge role-playing game, Mortal Shell is worth a look. Its defining draw is the Shell system, which ties character identity to different combat approaches, alongside the need to manage timing and risk in fights. Its scale is more modest than the genre’s sprawling flagships; that can be a benefit if you want a shorter-feeling, concentrated experience, but less appealing if you expect a vast world or extensive character customization.

- Intense Challenges: Solve environmental riddles, physics puzzles and other similar challenges in an interconnected vertical world. Even while being chased and hunted.

| Option | What the cited listing confirms | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Enhanced Edition | The US PlayStation listing offers PS4 and PS5 versions. It advertises 60fps gameplay, 4K resolution and high-quality textures on PS5. | PlayStation players, especially those who want the PS5-specific features. |
| Nintendo Switch Complete Edition | Nintendo UK says it combines content updates and DLC, including The Virtuous Cycle, Hadern as a fifth Shell and Rotten Autumn content. | Switch players who want the listed additional content in one edition. |
The names are not interchangeable: PlayStation calls its product Enhanced Edition, while Nintendo’s UK listing calls its package Complete Edition. The official pages establish these platform-specific descriptions, not that all platforms receive identical editions or bundles.
PlayStation: Enhanced Edition and the PS5 upgrade
The US PlayStation listing supports PS4 and PS5. It says eligible owners of the digital PS4 game, and owners of the PS4 disc version with a PS5 that has a disc drive, can obtain the PS5 Enhanced Edition upgrade. Disc owners must keep the disc inserted to download or play. The listing says new PS4 purchases qualify, but games obtained through the PlayStation Plus Monthly Game do not qualify for the free upgrade; those players may buy the Enhanced Edition. Check the current terms for your region and account before relying on an upgrade. PlayStation’s US Mortal Shell page has the listing and upgrade details.
Nintendo Switch: Complete Edition content and physical copy
Nintendo UK lists the Complete Edition as a download released 19 December 2022 and a Game Card release dated 28 April 2023. Its listed extras include The Virtuous Cycle, a repeatable-run roguelike mode; Hadern as a fifth playable Shell; and Rotten Autumn content, including Shell shades, a mini-quest, photo mode and an alternate boss soundtrack by Rotting Christ. Nintendo notes that the product description was provided by the publisher.
The Game Card listing confirms that a physical Switch version exists in the UK, but does not establish current stock or availability elsewhere. Check your country’s Nintendo store and local retailers for format, rating, language and availability. Nintendo UK’s Complete Edition page lists both release formats and the included content.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying
- Platform and edition: Verify the exact product name on your store; Enhanced Edition and Complete Edition refer to different platform listings.
- Included DLC: Confirm whether the content you want is bundled. Nintendo’s UK Complete Edition description lists its additions; do not assume a different platform’s product contains the same package.
- Upgrade eligibility: If you own the PS4 version, check whether your copy and PS5 hardware meet the PlayStation listing’s terms.
- Format and local availability: If you want a physical Switch copy, confirm Game Card stock in your region.
- Price: Store prices and inventory change. The official US PlayStation page has listed add-ons, but prices are regional and may change, so check the live store rather than relying on an old figure.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
