For curiosity-led exploration, start with Elden Ring; for a richly detailed western, choose Red Dead Redemption 2; and for a dense science-fiction city, try Cyberpunk 2077. There is no objective measure of which open world is “most immersive”: the right fit depends on whether you want to follow visual clues, inhabit a character, uncover stories, or feel surrounded by a busy setting.
What makes an open world feel immersive?
Immersion is a preference, not a comparable score. Some players want a world that rewards wandering and inference rather than directing them from marker to marker. Others want a place that feels richly inhabited, a story rooted in its locations, or the freedom to shape a character and decide what to do next.

The recommendations below separate those strengths instead of pretending there is one universal winner. They draw on editorial assessments from GamesRadar and PC Gamer, alongside PlayStation’s open-world game guide. These are qualitative judgments, not results from a shared immersion test.
Which game best fits the kind of immersion you want?
| Game | Best fit | What draws you in | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elden Ring | Curiosity-led discovery | Exploration often depends on noticing places, clues, and possibilities rather than following quest logs, marker trails, or collectible lists. | Its challenging combat is a major part of the experience; wandering away from a hard encounter is an option, but not a way to avoid difficulty altogether. |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | A detailed, atmospheric western | Regional variety, hunting, mysteries, and optional activities give the world many reasons to hold your attention. | Its appeal is a richly realized setting and activity, not a proven simulation benchmark. |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | A dense science-fiction city | Night City provides a bustling futuristic setting; the Phantom Liberty expansion adds the Dogtown district. | It is a more directed role-playing experience than a purely self-directed sandbox. The game had a troubled 2020 launch, and platform and current version matter when assessing its present-day experience. |
| The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | Role-playing freedom and customization | You can travel widely and take on different character roles, with a large library of user-created mods adding options on supported platforms. | Mod access and experience vary by platform, so do not assume the same choices on every console. |
| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | Narrative-led fantasy roaming | Quests set in a war-ravaged world connect travel to local problems and story. PlayStation’s Complete Edition includes two add-ons. | Its strongest pull is authored quests and narrative, rather than unrestricted role-play. |
How the recommended worlds invite exploration
Elden Ring: follow questions, not a checklist
Elden Ring is the clearest fit if immersion means getting curious and deciding what to investigate for yourself. PC Gamer emphasizes its organic exploration without quest logs, map markers, or collectible lists, while GamesRadar points to the mystery of its world and the freedom to leave a difficult encounter and explore elsewhere. Its discoveries are especially rewarding for players comfortable reading environments and inferring what a place might hold.

That freedom comes with a real cost: combat can be demanding. Choose it for mystery, exploration, and the satisfaction of finding your way—not because it promises a relaxed escape from difficult encounters.
Red Dead Redemption 2: spend time in the setting
Red Dead Redemption 2 suits players who want a world rich in atmosphere and things to do. Its regional variety, hunting, mysteries, and optional activities create different reasons to linger as you travel. GamesRadar and PlayStation both include it among their open-world recommendations.

- Available Now - Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new cooperative multiplayer experience inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology.
- Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Uncover the hidden wonders of Tsushima in this open-world action adventure.
- The rise of the Ghost: Forge a new path and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.
Think of “simulation” here as a description of its detailed western feel, not as a measured claim that it models the world more accurately than the other games on this list.
Cyberpunk 2077: get absorbed in a city
If you want a concentrated urban setting rather than broad wilderness, Cyberpunk 2077 offers Night City, described by PlayStation as a bustling futuristic metropolis. Phantom Liberty adds Dogtown for players with that expansion. The result is a strong choice for science-fiction atmosphere, though the game guides players through a more directed role-playing experience than Elden Ring.
Rank #3
- Be Mad Max - Become the iconic post-apocalyptic warrior, crafting and upgrading Max's equipment and weapons to survive by combining melee combat, gunplay and tactical techniques. Gamers must form alliances as they work towards the goal of building their "Magnum opus."
- Immersive savage Wasteland - Explore the gritty, dynamic world while braving the treacherous landscapes, hostile weather patterns and deadly marauders.
- survive the open-world landscape - Staying alive isn't easy. Players clash with deadly factions and gangs through scores of dangerous side-missions and quests in the dynamic open-world full of exploration.
- intense vehicular combat - Engage in dynamic inter-vehicular combat, taking down enemy vehicles with a range of powerful weapons. Car combat is entirely physics-based, so no two battles are ever the Same.
- build the ultimate survival machine - Players design, customize and upgrade their ultimate vehicle-the Magnum Opus-choosing from different car chassis and a slew of upgrades including mounted weapons, armour and engines to survive another day
Its reception has to be understood over time: PC Gamer notes that subsequent patches, the 2.0 update, and Phantom Liberty helped improve the game after its troubled 2020 launch. That history is a reason to check the version and platform you are considering, not to assume every edition or platform has had the same experience.
Skyrim: make the world fit your character
Skyrim stands out for role-playing flexibility. You can roam widely and pursue different character identities, while its extensive user-made mod library can offer further ways to customize the experience. Whether that last advantage applies to you depends on your platform; mod options are not identical everywhere.

The Witcher 3: let stories pull you across the map
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a good match when exploration feels most meaningful with a story attached. GamesRadar highlights quests grounded in a war-ravaged setting and local problems, so roaming often leads into authored narratives rather than only player-directed discovery. PlayStation lists a Complete Edition with two add-ons; check the edition listing for the platform you plan to use.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a useful comparison if you value getting lost and following whatever catches your eye. That description comes from an individual reader discussion, not a representative survey, so it illustrates one kind of exploration preference rather than establishing a consensus ranking.

Is there an objectively most immersive open-world game?
No comparable published statistic establishes an immersion winner among these titles. A 2025 DiGRA conference paper discusses several of these games in the context of open-world research, but it does not provide a comparative immersion rating. Bandai Namco Europe categorizes Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, and The Witcher 3 as open-world RPGs; that genre listing is not a ranking. The useful answer is therefore about fit: choose the world whose exploration style, story, atmosphere, and role-playing freedom match what you find absorbing.
