These are curated picks, not a definitive all-time ranking: “retro” can mean older arcade and console games collected on PS4, or original PlayStation-era games that received a separate PS4 release.

Counts and features above come from the cited publisher, store, or review—not a common scoring system. A larger lineup does not by itself mean a better collection.
Which collection should you choose?
Choose SEGA for breadth across 16-bit genres
SEGA Europe Community Manager Ibrahim Bhatti announced the PS4 collection on PlayStation.Blog in 2018, describing it as “over 50 classic games from the Mega Drive era” across a wide range of genres. Named games include Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Streets of Rage 1–3, Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes, Phantasy Star II–IV, Shining Force I–II, and Comix Zone. The announcement also lists save states and visual filters, plus multiplayer for supported games. See SEGA’s PlayStation.Blog announcement, and check your region’s current store entry before buying.
Choose Atari for early console and arcade selections
Atari’s product page lists 50 games for Atari Flashback Classics Vol. 2, including Adventure, Asteroids, Haunted House, Crystal Castles, Missile Command, Major Havoc, Red Baron, and Sprint 2. Its described display choices include scanlines, full-screen, and letterboxed modes, alongside arcade bezels. This is a focused collection of early-console and arcade material rather than a broad sampling of 8-bit and 16-bit systems. Atari’s page gives a December 2018 release date; it does not state the page’s publication year. Check the Atari product page and your local PS4 listing for current edition and availability details.

Choose Capcom for a multi-genre arcade mix
Push Square’s 2021 review covers a full 32-game PS4 package of Capcom arcade releases from 1984 to 2001, with action, shooting, and fighting games. The review notes save-anytime, difficulty, speed, and control options. It describes the PS4 offering at that time as a free download with additional games sold in three DLC packs. Because that package description is historical, verify current contents, edition, and regional store details before purchase. Read Push Square’s review.

What “retro” means for PS4
There are two useful categories here: older arcade or non-PlayStation console games collected for PS4, and original PlayStation-era favorites that may have a separate remake, rerelease, or other route to play on PS4. Those are not interchangeable. A title’s appearance on an original PlayStation does not establish that its original release runs on PS4.
A 2018 PlayStation.Blog retrospective names Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, and Ridge Racer Type 4 as staff favorites from PlayStation history. It mentions a modern PS4 reimagining of Abe’s Oddysee, but does not establish a PS4 edition for every original game named. Check each specific PS4 release or compatibility route before treating one as playable on the console. Read the PlayStation.Blog retrospective.

- Over 50 retro favourites in one great package
- Online multiplayer functionality for those titles that support 2+ players
How to pick a collection
- Start with the era. Choose among Atari 2600 and arcade selections, Konami arcade games, Capcom arcade releases, or SEGA’s Mega Drive-era console catalog.
- Match the genres. SEGA is the broadest genre sampler in this shortlist; Konami’s lineup has a strong shooter focus; Atari centers on early console and arcade games; Capcom spans action, shooting, and fighting.
- Check the conveniences you care about. Look for save support, difficulty and speed settings, visual filters, display modes, multiplayer, or archival extras in the specific edition.
- Verify how the content is sold. The Capcom review describes a free base download with additional packs; do not assume every collection has the same purchase structure or that historical package details remain current.
- Confirm the PS4 edition in your region. Listings, contents, and availability can vary or change. A title’s original-console release alone is not proof of PS4 playability.
Why there is no single all-time winner
The available collections serve different tastes and eras, and their game counts come from different kinds of sources: a publisher announcement, a product page, a store listing, and an independent review. They do not form a consistent quality comparison. A personal “best” list will depend on whether you value historical influence, how well particular games hold up, collection breadth, modern conveniences, or nostalgia. The recommendations above make those trade-offs explicit rather than assigning an unsupported universal score.
