Motion blur and chromatic aberration change different parts of a game image: motion blur smears detail during movement, while chromatic aberration separates colors around edges or across focal planes. They are separate effects, so compare and adjust them independently in the game you’re playing.

What motion blur does

Motion blur is the streaking or smearing of image detail associated with movement. Autodesk describes it as an effect that emulates the loss of detail when objects move too quickly to be seen clearly. In film, the blur comes from an object changing position while the camera’s shutter is open (Autodesk’s motion-blur explainer).

In a game, the effect may be noticeable when the camera turns or objects move quickly. It can make movement look more blurred or cinematic, but it can also make moving details less distinct. The precise effect depends on the game and its implementation.

What chromatic aberration does

Chromatic aberration is color fringing: different wavelengths of light refract by slightly different amounts and do not focus together. Epic Games explains the optical mechanism in its Fortnite post-process effects documentation. In game settings, EA describes the effect as color correction on different focal planes.

Unlike motion blur, chromatic aberration is about color alignment, not movement. It may show up as colored separation around edges or as a stylized treatment of the image. Whether that look suits a game is a matter of visual preference.

Motion blur vs. chromatic aberration

Effect What changes Where to look for it Possible trade-off
Motion blur Detail is smeared or streaked in relation to movement. Moving objects or the image during camera movement. Movement may look more blurred, and moving detail may be harder to distinguish.
Chromatic aberration Colors are separated or treated across focal planes. Colored edges and image areas affected by the game’s focal-plane treatment. It may contribute to a stylized look or appear distracting.

They are not synonyms, and one setting does not substitute for the other. Autodesk notes that motion blur has a controversial history in games and that many players disable it where possible; that is a qualitative observation, not a measured preference statistic. The official setting references establish that both effects can be adjusted, but they do not identify a universally best setting.

  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

How to compare them in a game

  1. Choose a scene that shows both kinds of detail. Look for movement, such as a camera turn or moving character, alongside high-contrast edges that make color separation easier to spot.
  2. Change only one setting. Turn motion blur off or reduce its amount, then compare the same scene. Restore it before testing chromatic aberration.
  3. Watch for the relevant cue. For motion blur, check whether movement smears less or more. For chromatic aberration, look for changes in color separation around edges or across the image.
  4. Keep the combination you prefer. You can leave one effect enabled and change the other if the game offers independent controls.

This is a practical visual check, not a performance test. The cited sources document visual effects and controls; they do not establish that disabling either effect improves frame rate.

Controls vary by game and platform

These examples are specific to the documented PC references where noted. Labels, options, and defaults may differ on other platforms or after game updates.

Game and reference Motion blur Chromatic aberration
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, PC (EA reference) On/off setting for blurring during certain movements; documented default: On. Separate on/off setting for color correction on various focal planes; documented default: On.
Battlefield 2042, PC (EA reference) Separate slider, range 0–100. Separate on/off control; documented default: On.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (Insomniac reference) Described as arising from camera movement and fast-moving objects; lower settings mean less blur and higher settings more apparent blur. Listed separately from motion blur.

EA’s Jedi: Survivor PC settings reference and Battlefield 2042 PC settings reference show why it is worth checking each control separately: one game may offer a motion-blur toggle, another an amount slider, while chromatic aberration has its own control. Insomniac’s accessibility options for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 likewise list chromatic aberration separately from motion blur.

Should you turn either effect off?

There is no evidence in these official sources for a single on-or-off rule that fits every player and game. Decide based on what the effect does to the image in the game you are playing: reduce motion blur if movement looks too smeared to you, or disable chromatic aberration if its color fringing distracts you. If you like either effect’s visual style, you can keep it on. Check the current game menu for the available control and its range.
