For a dependable early horse in Where Winds Meet, follow Chapter One toward the General’s Shrine and complete the Roundy encounter: chase him and interact while he is mounted. You can try to steal a horse from a passing rider sooner, but that route is less predictable and may bring retaliation. Mounts can also help with gathering, finding treasure and navigating—not just getting around faster.
How to get your first horse reliably
A guide updated in November 2025 describes the dependable early route as part of Chapter One: Heaven Has No Pier (TheGamer’s horse guide). After the tutorial, travel with Ruby toward the General’s Shrine. You’ll encounter Roundy, an NPC who has stolen a horse. After the dialogue, pursue him and interact while he is mounted. The guide says the horse you obtain is added to your stable.
This story encounter is the better choice if you want a reliable early mount without gambling on an opportunistic theft.
Can you get a horse even earlier?
You can try to snatch a horse from a mounted NPC on the road before reaching the General’s Shrine. The guide reports riders on roads in that area, including a road east of the shrine between the cliffside and river. This is an opportunistic method rather than a guaranteed route: a failed attempt can start a fight, and repeated theft may lead to a bounty or pursuing authorities.

| Use | Skill or trait | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Travel | High Speed; stamina-oriented traits | High Speed provides a straight-line speed boost; stamina traits can support longer rides. |
| Gathering | Collection | Collects nearby enemy drops while the horse is in Follow mode. |
| Resource farming | Petals Collection | Gathers nearby resources. |
| Chest hunting | Treasure Seeking | Locates a chest within range. |
| Navigation | Wayfinder | Travels toward a marked destination. |
| Exploration and riding | Fall mitigation, swimming, double-jumping and multi-rider skills | Support rough routes, water, jumps or riding together, depending on the mount’s skill set. |
How to choose a mount
Choose for the task you actually do. For covering ground, prioritize speed and stamina. For farming, look for nearby drop or resource collection. Treasure Seeking suits chest hunting, while Wayfinder is useful when you want help following a marked route. If you often ride through difficult terrain or with others, check for fall mitigation, swimming, double-jumping or multi-rider support.
Acquisition route is a separate consideration from utility. The guides distinguish Exploration Rewards—which can include field capture, theft, exploration and event routes—from Ingenious mounts, which commonly use premium purchase or draw routes. Those categories do not mean a premium mount is required to use the mount system. Specific routes and availability can vary, so check the current in-game interface rather than relying on an old shop listing.

The index says the slot count varies and lists the Shop and Divine Steed Level rewards as sources, but does not establish a current price or permanent schedule (Where Winds Meet Wiki’s Horse Gallop Tactic entry).
