For a practical room-by-room checklist, use the following as a starting point and adjust it to your home and lease:
- Kitchen: Clean counters, cabinets, sinks, and appliances, including the interiors where required. Remove food and trash.
- Bathroom: Clean fixtures, tiles, drains, and cabinets; remove residue and personal items.
- Bedrooms and living areas: Dust surfaces, clean floors, and empty closets and other storage.
- Throughout the home: Dust lights, blinds, vents, and baseboards; wipe doors, window sills, and switch plates.
- Final details: Check alarms and lights, clear belongings and trash, and clean patios or other included areas when applicable.
Care.com recommends emptying the space, gathering supplies first, and cleaning from top to bottom so dust and debris fall onto areas you have not yet cleaned. After belongings are out, it is easier to see and reach floors, cabinets, and corners.

How to clean before moving out
- Confirm the standard. Read the lease and any move-out instructions. If anything is unclear, ask the landlord or property manager which tasks are expected.
- Remove belongings and trash. Do a final walkthrough for items left in closets, cabinets, drawers, and appliances.

Should you hire a move-out cleaner?
Hiring can make sense if you are short on time, the home needs more work than you can manage, or you would rather focus on the move itself. DIY cleaning may be the better fit when you have the time, supplies, and ability to meet the property’s expectations. Neither choice guarantees a deposit refund: cleaning is only one part of the move-out process, and the applicable standard depends on your lease and local requirements.
