“mqutil.dll” errors you may see
Recommended Free Tools
Windows or an application may display one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because mqutil.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “mqutil.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mqutil.dll was not found.”
- “Cannot find
mqutil.dll.” - “The application or DLL
mqutil.dllis not a valid Windows image.” - “mqutil.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
mqutil.dll is a genuine Microsoft file associated with Microsoft Message Queuing, also called MSMQ. If it is missing, the safest repair is normally to restore the Windows MSMQ feature, then repair the application that reported the error.

The 60-second answer
Do not download mqutil.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32. MSMQ is an optional Windows component, so a missing file often means that Message Queuing is disabled, its component payload is damaged, or an application that depends on it is incomplete.
Try this order:
- Enable Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Server in Windows Features.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application.
- If MSMQ will not install, run DISM and SFC from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Check antivirus quarantine, Windows servicing errors, and the application’s own logs.
The file is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET Framework component. Installing those runtimes is not the primary fix for this error.

What is mqutil.dll?
mqutil.dll is associated with Microsoft Message Queue Server and is published by Microsoft Corporation. Its metadata identifies it as a Windows NT MQ utility DLL. It supports the Microsoft Message Queuing components used for reliable, asynchronous communication between applications through queues. Microsoft’s Message Queuing protocol overview explains the role of MSMQ in that communication model.
MSMQ is not installed on every Windows installation. It is an optional Windows feature, and its available subfeatures and installed files vary by Windows edition and build.
That is why there is no single modern file size, hash, version number, or folder path that should be used as a universal authenticity test. Older Windows inventories may show historical 32-bit builds, but an old Windows XP DLL is not an appropriate replacement for a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
Why does an application need MSMQ?
A program may use MSMQ to place jobs or messages in a queue instead of requiring two services to communicate at exactly the same time. Business software, administrative tools, older server applications, and some specialist programs can depend on it.
The error does not prove that the application itself is broken. It may be asking Windows for a component that was never enabled, was removed during cleanup, or became unavailable after an upgrade or incomplete feature installation.
Before repairing anything, note:
- The exact error text and error code.
- Whether the problem affects one application or several.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether you use Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server.
- Whether the issue began after removing Windows features, an upgrade, antivirus activity, disk cleanup, or an interrupted update.
Fix 1: Enable MSMQ in Windows Features
This is the best first fix on Windows 10 and Windows 11 when an application genuinely requires Microsoft Message Queuing.
Click-by-click instructions
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- In the Windows Features window, locate Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Server.
- Select the main feature.
- Expand it if Windows shows subfeatures.
- Select only the related components required by the application, unless its documentation specifies additional MSMQ features.
- Click OK.
- Allow Windows to search for and install the component files.
- Restart the computer if Windows requests it.
- Launch the affected application again.
The exact subfeature names can differ between editions and builds. Do not assume that a feature name from another computer applies identically to yours.
If the application requires an activation component, HTTP support, Active Directory integration, or another MSMQ-related feature, its vendor documentation should identify that dependency. Do not enable unrelated features simply because their names contain MSMQ.

- Run:
DISM /Online /Get-Features /Format:Table | findstr /I MSMQ
Review the feature names and their states. A commonly used command for the main server feature is:
DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /All /FeatureName:MSMQ-Server
Feature names differ by Windows release. If MSMQ-Server is not listed, use the exact name returned by /Get-Features rather than guessing.
When the command works, DISM should report that the operation completed successfully. Restart if requested, then test the application.

- Test the service and the application that reported the error.
Microsoft documents this process in its Server Manager roles and features guide.
PowerShell method
Open an elevated PowerShell window and run:
Install-WindowsFeature -Name MSMQ-Server -IncludeAllSubFeature
This command applies to Windows Server, not ordinary Windows 10 or Windows 11 client installations. Microsoft provides the command details in the Install-WindowsFeature reference.
After installation, restart if requested and check the application again. If the command reports that source files are unavailable, move to the DISM repair section instead of copying a DLL manually.

Use this fix when Windows Features cannot enable MSMQ, the installation ends with an error, or several Windows components appear damaged.
Common symptoms include:
0x800F081F0x800F080C- Error
14081 - “The referenced assembly could not be found.”
- Windows Features repeatedly rolls back the installation.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected Windows files against that repaired store.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
The scan can take time and may appear to pause. Do not close the window while it is working.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC may report that it repaired files, found no integrity violations, or found damaged files it could not repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRestart Windows, try enabling MSMQ again, and then launch the affected program.
Microsoft explains this repair sequence in its Windows image repair documentation.
When manually hunting through component versions and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan finds; repair actions are provided by the full version, and it is not required for this Windows repair.
If DISM reports that source files are missing
If DISM returns 0x800F081F or says that the source files could not be found, use matching Windows installation media or another approved repair source. The source must correspond to the installed Windows release and architecture.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not use an old Windows image, a different language edition, or an arbitrary ISO. A mismatched source can fail again or leave servicing problems unresolved. Microsoft’s DISM repair guidance covers the /Source option and its requirements.
After DISM completes successfully, run SFC again and retry the MSMQ installation.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program reports mqutil.dll, the application may be damaged even though MSMQ is installed correctly.
For a normal desktop application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If the error remains, choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application using its official installer.
Some applications use application-local components rather than the copy supplied by Windows. That is another reason copying a random DLL into a system folder may not solve the error.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity command before reinstalling the entire game. The exact label depends on the launcher.

If the application has a vendor-specific MSMQ prerequisite, install that prerequisite from the application’s official documentation. Do not assume that every program needs every MSMQ subfeature.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate file after a false positive, or it can remove a suspicious replacement.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
mqutil.dllor Microsoft Message Queuing. - Check the reported file path and publisher information.
- Do not restore the file blindly.
A file that belongs to a legitimate Windows component should be restored only when its location, signature, and surrounding installation are consistent with Windows. If the file is in an unusual application folder, has an unknown publisher, or was detected as malicious, leave it quarantined and perform a full security scan.

After handling quarantine, repair or re-enable MSMQ through Windows Features. That restores the component using Windows servicing instead of relying on an isolated file.

The problem may begin after:
- A failed Windows upgrade.
- A rollback.
- Removing optional Windows features.
- An interrupted update.
- A disk-cleanup operation.
- A security product change.
Install pending Windows updates, restart, and try the MSMQ installation again. If the feature still fails, run DISM and SFC before attempting another installation.
If the problem began immediately after a driver, update, security-product action, or feature change, System Restore may be appropriate. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, and choose a restore point from before the change.
System Restore is not a replacement for repairing a damaged application, and it does not make an unofficial DLL trustworthy. Back up important files before using recovery options.
Fix 7: Check architecture and avoid cross-version DLL copying
Do not copy an old 32-bit mqutil.dll into a modern 64-bit Windows directory. A 64-bit Windows installation normally uses System32 for 64-bit system binaries and SysWOW64 for 32-bit compatibility binaries. Those names are confusing by design and should not be used as a shortcut for choosing a DLL.
The correct architecture is supplied by Windows servicing or the application’s official installer.
If the error appears only in a 32-bit application, that does not mean you should download a 32-bit DLL manually. First restore MSMQ through Windows Features, then repair the application. If the application has its own architecture-specific prerequisite, use the vendor’s installer.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there
A graphics or chipset driver is not the normal source of mqutil.dll. Device Manager is relevant only if the problem began after a driver change, Windows reports a device error, or the application fails alongside broader hardware-driver problems.
To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, System devices, and Storage controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and review the Device status message.
- Use Update driver, or download the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not replace a working driver merely because mqutil.dll is missing. Match the driver to the device, Windows edition, and system architecture.
When checking dozens of driver versions manually is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its scan identifies; the full version performs driver installation, but a driver update is not required unless your symptoms point to a driver problem.
Why you should not download mqutil.dll separately
A loose DLL download can be:
- The wrong Windows build.
- The wrong architecture.
- From a different language or release.
- Modified or malicious.
- Missing the supporting MSMQ component registration and servicing state.
Even a genuine file copied into the right-looking folder may not fix the root cause. Windows may still consider MSMQ disabled, the component store may remain damaged, or the application may require another dependency.
Use Windows Features, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or the affected application’s official installer instead.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should you run regsvr32 mqutil.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command and does not install a missing Windows feature.
Running:
regsvr32 mqutil.dll
will not recreate MSMQ if the component is disabled or its payload is missing. It can also produce confusing errors when the DLL is not designed for manual registration.
Use regsvr32 only when the specific software vendor explicitly documents it for that software’s own build. Microsoft’s regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation explains why registration errors occur.
What to collect if the repair still fails

FAQ
Is mqutil.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft DLL associated with Microsoft Message Queuing. It is not necessarily present on every computer because MSMQ is an optional Windows feature.
Is mqutil.dll malware?
The filename itself is legitimate, but malware can use familiar filenames. Check the file’s location, Microsoft signature, and installation context. A copy from an unofficial download site should not be trusted merely because its name is correct.
Is MSMQ installed by default?
Not universally. MSMQ is installed as an optional component, and availability varies by Windows client and Server edition.
Do I need MSMQ Server or MSMQ Client?
Start with Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Server on Windows client systems and Message Queuing through Server Manager on Windows Server. The application may require a related subfeature, so use its documentation or the feature list reported by your Windows installation.
Will Visual C++ or DirectX fix mqutil.dll?
There is no evidence that mqutil.dll belongs to either runtime. Restore MSMQ and repair the affected application instead.
Can I copy mqutil.dll from another computer?
That is unsafe. The other computer may use a different Windows build, architecture, language, or MSMQ configuration. Restore the component through Windows servicing.
When should I run SFC?
Run DISM first when Windows components or feature installation are damaged, then run sfc /scannow. SFC may not repair the file if the component store or servicing state is itself broken.
