msawt.dll Is Missing: Trace the Old Microsoft Java App

msawt.dll is the Microsoft AWT Library for Java, a 32-bit component of the discontinued Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. If Windows 10 or Windows 11 reports that msawt.dll is missing, the immediate problem is usually an old application or installer that still expects Microsoft’s legacy Java runtime.

Do not start by downloading a loose copy of the DLL. The safest repair is to identify the program requesting it, then repair or reinstall that program from its original trusted media. Modern Java, Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, and current Windows Java packages do not normally replace msawt.dll.

What msawt.dll is

msawt.dll contains Microsoft’s implementation of AWT, the Abstract Window Toolkit used by Java applications with graphical interfaces. It was historically associated with Microsoft Windows and the Microsoft Java VM, also called MSJVM.

Older Windows and Internet Explorer-era software could install it with other Microsoft Java files, including components such as msjava.dll, javart.dll, javacypt.dll, jit.dll, and jview.exe. Archived installations commonly placed the 32-bit file in:

That historical location does not mean a copy should be downloaded and placed there today. msawt.dll was part of an old runtime environment, and its companion files, registry settings, and application-specific files may also be required.

Microsoft no longer distributes the MSJVM as a current download. Microsoft’s historical security documentation explains that the Java VM was no longer available for distribution, and current Microsoft Java guidance covers supported Java distributions rather than the discontinued MSJVM.

A current Java package, including Microsoft Build of OpenJDK, does not promise to provide msawt.dll. Modern Java normally uses a file named awt.dll, which is different.

What the error messages mean

You may see one of these messages:

  • msawt.dll was not found
  • The file msawt.dll is missing
  • The program can't start because msawt.dll is missing from your computer
  • Error loading msawt.dll. The specified module could not be found
  • Cannot find msawt.dll
  • msawt.dll access violation

Older Windows and Internet Explorer reports also mention crashes such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
IExplore caused an invalid page fault in module MSAWT.DLL

These messages all point to a program trying to load the old Microsoft Java component. They do not prove that the current Windows installation should contain the file.

The wording The specified module could not be found needs extra care. It can mean that msawt.dll itself is absent, but it can also mean that Windows found the file and could not load one of its dependencies. Replacing one DLL may therefore leave the actual problem untouched.

Before changing anything

First determine which executable is producing the message.

Note:

  1. The program name and shortcut location.
  2. Whether the error appears during Windows startup, when opening a particular application, or when running an installer.
  3. Whether the program is an old Java application, browser-based tool, game, business utility, or setup package.
  4. Whether the error began after reinstalling software, removing old Internet Explorer components, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, restoring an old disk image, or changing drivers.

If the message appears only when launching one old application, repair that application before repairing Windows. If it appears during startup, inspect the Startup apps list and the application’s installation folder to find the obsolete program that is still being launched.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that needs msawt.dll

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

This is the most likely fix.

The application may have installed msawt.dll originally but lost it during an incomplete update, failed uninstall, disk cleanup, antivirus action, or damaged reinstall. Restoring the entire application runtime is safer than copying one file.

Use the program’s repair option

  1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the application that produces the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

Some older desktop programs do not expose a Repair button in Settings. In that case:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Look for Repair, Change, or Modify.
  6. Follow the installer’s repair wizard.
  7. Restart Windows and test the program.

If the application has a launcher with Verify files, Scan and repair, or a similar function, run that from the launcher instead. A complete verification can restore companion files that a standalone DLL replacement would miss.

Reinstall from original media

If repair fails:

  1. Back up the application’s settings or saved data if needed.
  2. Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Run the original installer from trusted installation media.
  5. If the installer offers optional Java or legacy runtime components, install only those included with the original application.
  6. Start the program again.

Do not assume that a newer installer is compatible. A modern replacement may have removed the Microsoft Java dependency, while an old installer may require an obsolete environment that current Windows cannot fully support.

If the application is a game, use its official launcher verification or reinstall process. If it is a business application, obtain the installer from the organization or vendor that supplied it. If the original installer is unavailable, replacing the application may be safer than rebuilding a discontinued runtime from random files.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair succeeded if the application starts without the msawt.dll message and its main functions operate normally. If a different DLL error appears, the installation may contain several missing or incompatible legacy components. Return to the application’s complete repair or reinstall process rather than downloading each new DLL separately.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

Security software may remove an old DLL because legacy files can be vulnerable, modified, or bundled with an unsafe installer. Do not restore the file automatically.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Open any detection associated with the affected application or msawt.dll.
  6. Check the detected file path, threat name, and source.
  7. Run a scan of the original installer and the application folder.
  8. Restore or allow the file only if you can verify that it came from a trusted original installation and the detection is a false positive.

Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can reintroduce malware. If the file came from an unknown download, a modified installer, or an unexpected modern application directory, do not restore it. Remove the questionable installation and reinstall the application from trusted media.

After a verified restoration, launch the application. If Windows Security quarantines the file again, stop trying to force it back. Investigate the detection and replace the application or obtain a clean installer.

Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes

Use this step when you also see damaged Windows behavior, missing built-in files, failed updates, or other system-component errors. It is less likely to restore msawt.dll on a clean modern Windows installation because current Windows does not normally include the discontinued MSJVM.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  4. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows again.
  3. Test the affected application.

You can follow Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM instructions if either command reports an error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired damaged files. If the application still reports msawt.dll, repair the application itself. SFC is not a general-purpose way to obtain an old third-party or discontinued application runtime.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed rarely helps. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies, while the repair action is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the dependency.

Fix 4: Undo a recent system or software change

Time needed: 15 to 40 minutes

If msawt.dll worked until a recent update, cleanup operation, application removal, or system change, reverse that change.

Remove a recent application or update

  1. Press Win + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Update history.
  4. Review recent quality, driver, and feature updates.
  5. If the timing clearly matches the error, select Uninstall updates.
  6. Remove only the update you have identified as the likely trigger.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

You can also return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select a recently installed program, and choose Uninstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not remove unrelated updates merely because the error is difficult to diagnose. A legacy application may simply have reached a compatibility limit on current Windows.

Use System Restore

System Restore may help when an appropriate restore point exists.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Confirm the restore point.
  6. Select Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, installed programs, and drivers without removing personal files. It does not guarantee restoration of a discontinued MSJVM file, and it may remove an application installed after the chosen restore point. Microsoft provides further guidance for System Restore.

Fix 5: Check drivers only when the timing points to a driver change

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

A graphics or chipset driver does not normally provide msawt.dll. Do not install drivers as a generic DLL fix. Check this path only if the application worked until a driver update, the error appears with graphics-related crashes, or Device Manager shows a problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the graphics device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Check the driver date and provider.
  8. If available, select Roll Back Driver.
  9. Restart Windows and test the application.

If rollback is unavailable:

  1. Return to Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the device.
  3. Select Uninstall device.
  4. Do not select an option that removes the driver package unless you have a known replacement.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Install the driver from the computer or graphics-device manufacturer.
  7. Restart again.

When several hardware drivers are outdated, manually hunting versions and matching hardware IDs is slow and easy to get wrong. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the old application that requests msawt.dll.

If Device Manager shows no warning icons and the error appeared only when launching one old program, stop troubleshooting drivers and return to that program’s installer.

Fix 6: Confirm that the file is not being confused with awt.dll

Time needed: 5 minutes

Modern Java installations commonly use:

awt.dll

That is not the same file as:

msawt.dll

Do not rename awt.dll, copy it over msawt.dll, or assume that installing a current Java runtime will satisfy the old application. The application may have been built specifically for Microsoft’s Java VM.

Check the exact spelling in the error message and the application’s documentation or installer logs. If the program actually asks for awt.dll, use the Java distribution required by that program. If it asks for msawt.dll, identify the legacy Microsoft Java dependency and repair the complete application installation.

Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this

regsvr32 is used to register DLLs that expose a DllRegisterServer entry point. It is not a general repair command for every missing DLL.

Running this command against msawt.dll is not an appropriate first step:

  • GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
regsvr32 msawt.dll

It may produce:

The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

That message does not mean the file needs to be downloaded again. It means the DLL is not a self-registering component. Microsoft documents the purpose and syntax of regsvr32.

Do not register the file unless the original application’s documentation specifically requires registration and provides the correct command.

Do not copy msawt.dll into system folders

Manually copying a file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder can create several problems:

  • The DLL may be the wrong historical version.
  • A 32-bit application may receive an incompatible file.
  • Required companion files may still be absent.
  • The file may be tampered with.
  • Windows may continue loading another copy from a different path.
  • The application may fail later with an unrelated entry-point or dependency error.

The historical msawt.dll was generally a 32-bit component. That does not mean copying it into SysWOW64 is automatically correct. Windows folder naming and application architecture are easy to misunderstand, and the application’s installer should place the file where its runtime expects it.

What caused the error

The likely causes, in order, are:

Cause What it means Best response
Incomplete application installation The program lost a legacy runtime file or companion component Repair or reinstall the original application
Discontinued Microsoft Java dependency The program expects MSJVM rather than modern Java Use the original application environment or replace the software
Antivirus quarantine Security software removed or blocked the file Inspect Protection history and restore only a verified file
Windows corruption Protected Windows components are damaged Run DISM, then SFC
Architecture mismatch A 32-bit program is being given the wrong runtime or DLL Restore the complete 32-bit application installation
Recent system change An update, cleanup, driver, or uninstall changed the environment Uninstall the trigger or use System Restore

Historical versions of this file have been reported under different Microsoft Java and Windows builds. There is no current Microsoft-supported version catalog that can be used to select a replacement by file size or version number.

What to do if none of these fixes work

Find the exact executable making the request. Check the shortcut’s Target field, the application’s installation logs, and startup entries. If the error comes from an old installer, the installer itself may be the obsolete component rather than the program you intended to install.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At that point, choose one of these paths:

  1. Obtain a clean installer from the original software provider.
  2. Contact the organization that supplied the legacy application.
  3. Run the application in a properly isolated, supported virtual machine using appropriate legacy media.
  4. Replace the application with a maintained alternative.
  5. Remove the obsolete startup entry if the program is no longer needed.

Do not keep adding Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or current Java redistributables at random. Those packages do not normally supply msawt.dll, and layering unrelated runtimes can make diagnosis harder.

Frequently asked questions

Is msawt.dll a Windows system file?

It was historically included with older Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Java distributions. It is not a normal component of current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations, so a modern computer mentioning it is usually running old software.

Is msawt.dll part of modern Java?

No. Modern Java distributions commonly use awt.dll. msawt.dll belongs to Microsoft’s discontinued Java VM and should not be treated as a current Java runtime file.

Can I install Microsoft Java to restore it?

Microsoft no longer provides an official standalone MSJVM download. Current Microsoft Java guidance does not identify a modern Java package as a replacement for msawt.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Visual C++ the right fix?

Usually not. msawt.dll is a Microsoft Java component, not a Visual C++ runtime file. Install Visual C++ only when the application specifically documents that dependency.

Should I use Windows Features?

Windows Features does not provide a current replacement for the discontinued Microsoft Java VM. Do not enable random legacy features to solve this error. Use the affected application’s installer or repair process instead.

Will SFC restore msawt.dll?

Only if the file belongs to the Windows component store being repaired. On modern Windows, SFC should not be expected to restore a discontinued application runtime. Run DISM and SFC when there is broader evidence of Windows corruption, then repair the application separately.

Should I download msawt.dll from a DLL website?

No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or the wrong historical version. Even a genuine-looking file may not include the companion runtime files the application needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest fix?

Identify the old application requesting the file and repair or reinstall that application from its original trusted media. If the software is no longer supported, use a replacement or a controlled virtual-machine setup rather than rebuilding the old runtime one DLL at a time.
