You may also see “msdadc.dll was not found,” “There was a problem starting msdadc.dll,” “Error loading msdadc.dll,” or “The specified module could not be found.” msdadc.dll is a Microsoft Data Access Components file used for OLE DB data-type conversion, so the correct repair depends on whether Windows or one old application is failing.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you are seeing:
- Only one old program fails: Repair or reinstall that application first. Its installer may expect a private or registered OLE DB component.
- Several database tools or legacy applications fail: Repair Windows data-access components with Windows Update, DISM and SFC.
- The problem began after antivirus action: Check Windows Security protection history before changing system files.
- The error appeared after an application or Windows update: Try System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists.
- The message includes
0xc000007b: Suspect a 32-bit/64-bit or binary-format mismatch. Do not replace random DLLs. - A game fails: Use the launcher’s file-verification feature before attempting system changes.
- You are running Windows 2000, XP or Server 2003: Legacy MDAC packages and Component Checker may be relevant. They are not normal repair tools for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Do not start by downloading msdadc.dll from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, belong to the wrong Windows release, have the wrong architecture, or fail to repair the missing dependency or registration that caused the message.

What msdadc.dll does
msdadc.dll is Microsoft’s OLE DB Data Conversion Stub, part of Microsoft Data Access Components. Microsoft documentation explains that OLE DB provider code calls this component when data must be converted between types. See Microsoft’s OLE DB data-conversion documentation.
It is not:
- A Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DirectX component
- A .NET runtime file
- A hardware driver
- A complete database driver by itself
MDAC was later renamed Windows Data Access Components, or WDAC. The stack includes OLE DB, ADO and ODBC technologies and is shipped with Windows for compatibility with older software. Microsoft describes this history in its SQL Server connectivity documentation.
Older installations commonly placed the file under:
%ProgramFiles%Common FilesSystemOle DBmsdadc.dll
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit components may use an x86 common-files location. Current placement depends on the Windows release and architecture. Do not assume that copying a file into System32 or SysWOW64 is correct.
1. Repair the affected application first
If only one application displays the error, the application is the best place to start. Its installation may be incomplete, its private copy may be damaged, or its setup program may have failed to register an old COM component.
Repair an installed application
On Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Not every desktop program provides an Advanced options page. If you see Modify, Change or Repair in the application’s own setup utility, use that instead.
For older Control Panel programs:
- Press Win + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair, Change or Uninstall.
- Follow the installer’s repair prompts.
If repair is unavailable, uninstall the program and reinstall it from the original installation media or the software vendor’s official installer. Restart Windows before testing it again.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if the same executable starts without the msdadc.dll message and its database or file-loading function works normally.
If the error remains limited to that application, do not install MDAC packages blindly. The program may need another OLE DB provider, an old runtime, a compatibility setting or a vendor-specific update. Record the application name, executable path, Windows version and complete error text before contacting its vendor.
2. Install Windows updates, then restart
Windows Data Access Components is integrated into Windows on modern systems. An incomplete update or damaged component store can affect files used by older applications.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the affected program again.
Microsoft’s instructions are available in Install Windows updates.
If the update itself fails, restart and try Windows Update again. Do not substitute an old MDAC installer for a current Windows repair. Windows Vista and later treat WDAC as an operating-system component rather than a separately distributed modern runtime. On Windows XP SP2 and later, the old mdac_typ.exe package also does not replace the newer integrated MDAC installation.
3. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when several applications fail, Windows files may be damaged, or the error appeared after an interrupted update or cleanup operation. DISM repairs the Windows component store first. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired store.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Leave the administrator Command Prompt open.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft specifically recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files, that it found no integrity violations, or that it could not repair some files. If it cannot repair everything, restart and run the DISM and SFC sequence once more. If the error persists, the named DLL may not be the real missing module. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency loaded by msdadc.dll, not only to msdadc.dll itself.
Repeating SFC and DISM manually can make it difficult to identify what changed. Outbyte PC Repair provides a scan that shows what it identifies, while the repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows repair commands remain the appropriate first step.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Check Windows Security quarantine
If the error began after an antivirus detection, cleanup operation or suspicious download, Windows Security may have quarantined a file.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry associated with the affected application or file.
- Check the original path, detection details and publisher.
Restore a quarantined file only when its original location, publisher and digital signature are trustworthy and you are certain it was a false detection. Otherwise, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.

Do not download a replacement DLL to bypass a security detection. If malware altered or removed the file, restoring the wider Windows component or reinstalling the affected application is safer than adding an unverified binary.
5. Check the application’s architecture
A 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit data-access components and registration. A 64-bit application normally needs a compatible 64-bit provider. A 64-bit program cannot normally use a 32-bit database provider in the same way as a 32-bit program.

Architecture mismatches are especially likely when the error includes:
0xc000007b
To identify the application involved:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Note the executable path in Target.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Check the application’s documentation or vendor support information for its architecture.
Do not mix msdadc.dll files from different Windows releases. A file catalog’s version or size is not proof that the file belongs on your installation. Windows servicing, the file’s digital signature and the executable architecture matter more than a matching filename.
6. Use regsvr32 only for a specific COM-registration problem
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. Microsoft says it works with self-registering COM DLLs that expose the required registration functions. See Microsoft’s Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.
msdadc.dll is unusual among ordinary runtime files because historical versions exposed COM registration functions, and old installers sometimes attempted to register it. Registration is therefore relevant only when:
- The error specifically says the component could not register.
- The file came from the original Microsoft or application installer.
- The file matches the affected application’s architecture.
- You have confirmed that the old setup requires registration.
Do not copy an arbitrary DLL into a Windows folder and then register it.
For a verified 64-bit copy, an administrator Command Prompt may use:
regsvr32 "C:verifiedpathmsdadc.dll"
For a verified 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit registration tool is normally:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:verifiedpathmsdadc.dll"
The names are confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 contains the 64-bit system tools and SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit tools.
If registration reports that the entry point is missing, the DLL is not self-registering in the way expected, or its dependencies are unavailable. Stop there and repair or reinstall the application or Windows component instead.
7. Do not use Windows Features as a random DLL repair
Windows Features can add optional operating-system components, but enabling unrelated features does not normally restore msdadc.dll.
To inspect available features:
- Press Win + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the list.
- Do not enable features merely because they mention legacy compatibility or .NET.
- Select Cancel unless the affected application’s official documentation specifically requires a feature.
msdadc.dll is not supplied by Visual C++, DirectX or .NET. Installing those packages may be appropriate for a different error, but it does not provide this Microsoft Data Access component.
8. Do not use Device Manager unless a provider depends on hardware
msdadc.dll is a data-access runtime, not a hardware driver. Reinstalling display, chipset or storage drivers is normally irrelevant to this particular error.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use Device Manager only when the failing application explicitly depends on a hardware-connected database provider or a device whose own software has failed:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message and note any error code.
- Install the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official source if the device itself is malfunctioning.
Do not uninstall a working device simply because an unrelated program reports msdadc.dll.
Driver hunting is often a separate task involving several hardware vendors and architecture checks. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and install updates through its full version, but driver repair is not the normal solution for msdadc.dll, and an application-specific reinstall remains the definitive fix when that application owns the failure.
9. Repair a game through its launcher
There is no verified evidence that a particular modern game commonly requires msdadc.dll. If a game displays the message, first assume that its installation or an old bundled component may be damaged.

Verification replaces changed or corrupt game files without affecting saves. If the launcher offers a similar repair function, use it before downloading system DLLs.
If the game still fails, reinstall the game from its official launcher and check whether it supports your Windows version. A legacy title may require compatibility settings or a supported older virtual machine rather than a random replacement file.
10. Legacy MDAC packages and old Windows systems
The standalone package named MDAC_TYP.EXE was the MDAC 2.8 SP1 redistributable for legacy operating systems. It should not be used as a repair package on Windows 10 or Windows 11 because WDAC is integrated into those systems.
The Microsoft MDAC 2.8 SP1 download page is relevant only when you are maintaining a genuinely old, supported-by-that-software environment. Check the package’s current availability and system requirements before using it.

The MDAC Component Checker page explains the tool and the standalone-installer limitations. Installing these packages on current Windows is not a substitute for DISM, SFC or application repair.
11. Try System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, application installation or system cleanup, System Restore may return system configuration to an earlier state.
- Press Win + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
Use this only when an appropriate restore point exists. System Restore may remove applications or updates installed after that point. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the process.
Prevention and final diagnostic checklist
Avoid future DLL problems by keeping Windows updated, installing legacy applications only from their original vendor media, and using the application’s repair or launcher-verification function before changing system files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the normal repairs fail, record:
- The exact error text
- The application and executable path
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Your Windows edition and build
- Any error code, including
0xc000007b - The date of the last working launch
- Recent antivirus, Windows or application changes
- Relevant entries from Event Viewer
The remaining cause may be a missing third-party OLE DB provider, an unsupported legacy application, a damaged COM registration or a dependency other than msdadc.dll. That information gives the application vendor or Windows technician something actionable instead of another reason to copy an untrusted DLL into System32.
FAQ
Is msdadc.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It belongs to Microsoft’s Windows data-access stack, historically called MDAC and later WDAC. Older application installers could also deploy or expect the component.
Should I download msdadc.dll separately?
Normally no. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, antivirus history and application repair. Random DLL downloads can provide the wrong file, wrong architecture or malware.
Is msdadc.dll a database driver?
Not by itself. It is an OLE DB data-conversion component used by database providers and consumers.
Will Visual C++, DirectX or .NET fix it?
No. Those packages do not provide msdadc.dll.
Should I copy the file to System32?
No. Modern Windows uses architecture-specific system and component locations. Copying a DLL can create version, signature, dependency and registration problems.
Should I run regsvr32 msdadc.dll?
Only when a verified matching file and a specific old COM-registration problem justify it. It is not the normal first-line repair.
Do I need MDAC 2.8 on Windows 11?
No. Do not install MDAC 2.8 SP1 as a repair package on Windows 11 or Windows 10. Their data-access components are integrated into Windows.
Why does the message say the module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency of msdadc.dll may be missing, or the file may be incompatible or incorrectly registered. The wording does not prove that the named file itself is absent.
