msdaenum.dll was not found. You may also see “The program can’t start because msdaenum.dll is missing from your computer” or “Error loading msdaenum.dll.”
This file is a legitimate Microsoft OLE DB component from the MDAC and WDAC data-access stack. It supports the OLE DB Root Enumerator, also described as the OLE DB Services Enumerator, which legacy database applications, installers, reporting software, and Office or Access-related programs may use.
The safest repair is usually to fix the application that reports the error, not to download a replacement DLL.

What msdaenum.dll does
msdaenum.dll belongs to the Microsoft Data Access Components family. Microsoft renamed the integrated Windows version to Windows Data Access Components, or WDAC, beginning with Windows Vista. Modern Windows includes its data-access components as part of the operating system rather than offering MDAC as a current, general-purpose standalone download.
Historical Microsoft manifests place the file in:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemOle DB
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy may instead be under:
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemOle DB
Those paths are more relevant than C:WindowsSystem32. Do not assume that copying the file into System32 is correct.
The file is not part of the Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET. Its version and exact location depend on the Windows release, architecture, MDAC or WDAC generation, and the application using it.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the best first step when one program fails and Windows otherwise works normally. A damaged installation, incomplete update, removed private copy, or obsolete installer can all produce this error.
Repair an installed app
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
For a traditional desktop application:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the program from the same list, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or the official launcher. Back up saved data and configuration files first. For games, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking function.
If reinstalling restores the program, the application was the damaged part. If the installer reports that a database component is missing, use the application publisher’s supported prerequisite package rather than a random DLL download.

Fix 2: Repair Windows components
Use this step when Windows files may be damaged, more than one application is affected, or application repair does not help.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC may need as a source. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the affected program.
A message saying that corruption was repaired means Windows found and replaced protected system files. “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no protected Windows corruption. It does not prove that an application’s private copy is present or healthy.
If the commands fail, record the exact message, restart, and run DISM again before repeating SFC. On Windows 11, another supported option is Settings → System → Recovery → Fix problems using Windows Update → Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.

Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application can require 32-bit OLE DB components even when Windows is 64-bit. Checking only the 64-bit directories can therefore lead you to the wrong conclusion.
To identify the application architecture, check its publisher’s system requirements or installation documentation. You can also inspect the application’s installation location:

These locations are clues, not absolute proof.
Do not copy a 64-bit DLL over a 32-bit installation, or vice versa. Do not rename a different file to msdaenum.dll. Repair or reinstall the application using the architecture-specific installer and database prerequisites supplied by its publisher.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a file that an older application installed. Treat this as a lead, not proof that the file was harmless.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand an item related to the affected application.
- Check its original path and detection details.
Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that the application came from a trusted official installer and that the file belongs to that installation. The safer repair is normally to reinstall the trusted application so it places a verified copy back on the system.
Run a full Microsoft Defender scan if the file disappeared unexpectedly, the application installer was not official, or other unusual symptoms are present. Do not disable protection merely to install an unknown DLL.
Fix 5: Check whether a dependency is actually missing
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that msdaenum.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL or by the application.
Check these points:
- Confirm whether
msdaenum.dllexists in the application’s installation directory or the expected OLE DB directory. - Check the application’s own error log, if it has one.
- Repair or reinstall the application and its officially supported database prerequisites.
- Confirm that the program is compatible with your Windows release.
- Run DISM and SFC if other Windows components also appear damaged.
- Scan for malware if files are repeatedly removed or renamed.
SFC may repair a protected Windows component but may not repair a private copy installed by an application. A clean reinstall may also fail when the application installer itself is obsolete or incompatible with current Windows.

Fix 6: Update drivers only when the symptoms support it
A display, storage, or chipset driver is not normally the direct source of an msdaenum.dll error. Driver work is relevant when the database application also crashes during hardware access, Windows reports device errors, or the problem began immediately after a driver change.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the reported symptom, such as Storage controllers, Display adapters, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and status.
- Use Update driver or obtain the correct package from the hardware manufacturer.
Do not update unrelated drivers just because the DLL error mentions a database application. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan to identify stale drivers, while installation is handled by the full version; use it only as an optional convenience and keep the application’s official reinstall as the main repair.
Fix 7: Use regsvr32 only for a registration problem
msdaenum.dll appears to expose COM registration functions, so regsvr32 can be relevant when the application reports a broken registration rather than a missing file.
It will not:
- Recreate a missing DLL.
- Repair a damaged dependency.
- Replace the wrong architecture.
- Fix an incomplete application installation.
First open Command Prompt as administrator and confirm the file exists. For a 64-bit copy in the historical OLE DB directory, use:
%SystemRoot%System32regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemOle DBmsdaenum.dll"
For a 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows, use the 32-bit registration tool:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemOle DBmsdaenum.dll"
The directory names are counterintuitive: System32 contains 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit binaries.
A successful registration message means the selected DLL accepted the registration request. If Windows reports that the module could not be loaded, check the path, architecture, and dependencies. If it reports that the entry point was not found, you may have used the wrong registration tool or an incompatible file.
For a simple “file is missing” message, stop here and repair the application or Windows instead.

Fix 8: Consider System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows change, application installation, or other identifiable system event and the restore point predates the problem.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the results.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but back up important data before proceeding.

Why you should not download msdaenum.dll separately
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong Windows or MDAC generation.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A modified or malicious file.
- A file that does not match the application’s dependencies.
- A replacement that hides the original installation problem.
Copying a DLL into System32 also does not guarantee that the application searches there. It can create a second, harder-to-diagnose version mismatch.
Microsoft’s old MDAC 2.8 packages are intended for historically supported operating systems and the MDAC 2.8 SDK is a developer download, not a general missing-DLL repair kit. Do not install the old runtime on Windows 10 or Windows 11 as a first response. Use Windows servicing and the application publisher’s official installer instead.
Prevention after the repair
- Keep the affected application updated when its publisher supports current Windows.
- Save the original installer and supported database prerequisites.
- Avoid registry cleaners and DLL-fixing utilities that replace files blindly.
- Check Windows Security Protection history when a file disappears.
- Keep backups of application data before uninstalling.
- Record whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Create a restore point before major driver or application changes.
- If every program begins reporting missing system files, investigate Windows corruption, disk problems, or malware rather than treating each DLL separately.
FAQ
Is msdaenum.dll a genuine Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Data Access Components and the integrated Windows Data Access Components stack. Its documented role is the OLE DB Root Enumerator or OLE DB Services Enumerator.
Is msdaenum.dll part of Visual C++?
No. It is an OLE DB data-access component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Which application uses it?
There is no single universal program. Legacy database applications, installers, reporting tools, Office or Access-related software, and other OLE DB or ADO consumers may use it.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Only when the evidence points to broken COM registration and the file already exists. Registration is not the normal fix for a missing file.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
That result may be correct if the missing copy belongs to the application rather than protected Windows files. Repair or reinstall the affected program.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it when the failure clearly follows a recent system change and a restore point exists from before that change. Repair the application first when only one program is affected.
