msdaipp.dll is an old Microsoft Data Access Component Internet Publishing Provider used by legacy software to access Web Folders, FrontPage and WebDAV-style resources. If msdaipp.dll is missing, Windows usually needs the older Office, SharePoint, FrontPage, database or publishing application repaired rather than a random DLL downloaded from the internet.
The file is associated with the OLE DB provider named MSDAIPP.DSO. It appeared in Microsoft Data Access Components, later called Windows Data Access Components, and was also installed by some Microsoft products. It is not a Visual C++ 2015 runtime file.
What the msdaipp.dll error means
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because msdaipp.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application has failed to start because msdaipp.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading msdaipp.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: msdaipp.dll.”
- “MSDAIPP.DLL Failed to Register.”
The first messages mean the application could not load the provider or one of its dependencies. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that msdaipp.dll itself is absent. A dependent component, an incompatible architecture or a damaged installation can produce the same result.
msdaipp.dll is primarily a legacy 32-bit component. A known build is 32-bit version 11.0.5510.0, with a reported size of approximately 0.8 MB, but historical Office and SharePoint installations used other builds. Do not use the version or size as a universal identification rule.

Before changing Windows, identify the program that needs the DLL
The program named in the error is more important than the DLL filename. Ask what changed immediately before the failure:
- Was Office, SharePoint, FrontPage or an older database program removed?
- Did an installer or update stop halfway through?
- Did antivirus software quarantine the file?
- Does only one legacy application fail, while Windows and other applications work?
- Is the application 32-bit on 64-bit Windows?
- Is the software running from an old installation folder, backup or copied drive?
If only one application reports the error, repair that application first. If several unrelated older programs fail, investigate Windows components and security quarantine after checking the parent installations.
Fix 1: Repair the application that shows the error
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
This is the safest and most likely fix when one program is affected. The application installer can restore the correct copy and its related provider files as a matched set.
Repair through Windows Settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the program that displays the
msdaipp.dllerror. - Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If there is no Repair option, open the three-dot menu and choose Modify, Change or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides. Select Repair or Change in the program setup window.
Repair through Control Panel
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the original program.
For Office, SharePoint, FrontPage or another Microsoft suite, repair the suite that originally installed the failing application. Do not copy a DLL from a different Office or SharePoint version. These older components were distributed as matched sets and may depend on related files and registry information.
If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the affected legacy program and reinstall it from its original Microsoft media or a legitimate installer. Back up any application data first. Reinstalling the parent application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing private copy.
How to tell whether this worked
The original program should open without the DLL message. If the same error returns immediately after repair, note whether the installer reported missing source files, whether antivirus removed the file again, and whether the application is compatible with your version of Windows.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security Protection History
Time needed: 5 minutes
Security software can quarantine a genuine old DLL, especially when it is installed by legacy software or stored in an unexpected application directory. Do not restore a file solely because its name is msdaipp.dll. The filename by itself does not prove that the file is genuine.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions.
- Open an item only if it clearly identifies the affected application or Microsoft installation.
- Check the file path and detection details.
- Restore it only when the file came from a verified Microsoft or legitimate application installation and there is no indication of tampering.
- Run a full scan after reviewing the event.
If the file was in a temporary folder, a writable location unrelated to the application, or an unsigned and unexpected directory, do not restore it. Repair or reinstall the parent program instead.
After restoring a verified file, run the affected program again. If Windows Security quarantines it again, stop restoring it and investigate the detection.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use Windows servicing commands when several applications are affected, protected Windows files are damaged, or the problem began after a failed Windows update. These commands do not guarantee restoration of a private DLL installed only by Office, SharePoint or another application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Do not close the administrator window while either scan is running. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the application repair rather than repeatedly copying DLLs from elsewhere.
When manually tracing component corruption becomes difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows what it identifies; its repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required for this fix or guaranteed to restore an application-owned DLL.

This reinstalls the same Windows version while preserving apps, files and settings. It is a Windows repair method, not a replacement for reinstalling an old Office, SharePoint or database application.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10 minutes
A 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit components. Installing or locating a 64-bit substitute will not satisfy it.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while 32-bit applications can use the 32-bit environment managed through WOW64 and commonly associated with SysWOW64. The names are unintuitive, and neither folder should be used as a destination for a randomly downloaded DLL.
To identify the application architecture:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the failing process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also inspect the application’s installer documentation or product properties. The important point is that the provider and its dependencies must match the application and product version.
Do not manually move msdaipp.dll between System32, SysWOW64 and an application folder. The correct installation location depends on the product that installed it.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 5: Use the correct MDAC or WDAC path
Time needed: 15–60 minutes
msdaipp.dll has a historical connection to Microsoft Data Access Components, but the correct repair depends on the operating system.
- On Windows 2000, the appropriate Microsoft MDAC package may apply.
- On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, MDAC was included with the operating system or service packs.
- On Windows Vista and later, the equivalent Windows Data Access Components were part of Windows and were not separately redistributable.
Do not install the old MDAC 2.8 SP1 redistributable as a general repair for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Microsoft documents that package for Windows 2000, while later Windows versions use operating-system servicing.
The MDAC 2.8 SDK is a developer SDK, not a normal end-user repair package. Installing an SDK will not automatically repair an Office or SharePoint installation.
For Windows 10 or Windows 11, use this order:
- Repair the application that needs the provider.
- Install available Windows updates.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Use a Windows repair reinstall if Windows itself remains damaged.
- Reinstall unsupported legacy software only from legitimate original media.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the application depends on them
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A driver update is not the normal repair for msdaipp.dll. This is an old data-access provider, not a graphics, audio or printer driver. Consider driver work only if the error began with a broader hardware-related application failure or the affected software explicitly requires a device driver.

To check drivers using Windows:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If a recent driver caused the application to fail, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, when available. Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a suitable driver.
When hunting through Device Manager for stale versions is taking longer than the application repair itself, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; its driver installation is handled by the full version, and updating a driver is not expected to fix an application-owned msdaipp.dll copy in every case.
Do not use regsvr32 as a first repair
Time needed: Not recommended unless the product specifically instructs it
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the required registration entry points. It is not a universal DLL repair command.

The message “MSDAIPP.DLL Failed to Register” was documented in connection with older SharePoint setup problems, but that does not mean copying a DLL and registering it is a supported solution on current Windows. Registering the wrong architecture can also produce another error.

Use regsvr32 only when the original application’s documented installer or Microsoft support procedure explicitly requires it, and use the copy installed by that product. Repairing or reinstalling the parent application is safer.
Why downloading msdaipp.dll is usually the wrong fix
Random DLL download sites create several problems:
- The file may contain malware or have been modified.
- The build may belong to a different Office, SharePoint or MDAC release.
- A 32-bit file may be unsuitable for the calling application.
- The DLL may require other missing dependencies.
- Copying it into a system folder can leave Windows with mismatched components.
- It does not repair the registry, installer state or related provider files.
There is no current Microsoft download page offering a standalone, generally supported msdaipp.dll for modern Windows. Use the legitimate installer for the affected application, Microsoft Windows Update, Windows servicing or a Windows repair installation instead.

If the error remains after repair
Capture the following information before making further changes:
- The exact error text.
- The name and version of the application that fails.
- The full path shown for any remaining
msdaipp.dll. - Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined anything.
- The final DISM and SFC results.
- Whether the failure affects one program or several.
A dependency error may require repairing another component installed by the same application. If the software is too old for Windows 10 or Windows 11, check whether the vendor provides a supported update or compatibility guidance. Do not keep replacing individual DLLs until the installation becomes impossible to audit.
System Restore can help after a recent failed installation when restore points are available, but it is not a substitute for repairing the parent application. If Windows 11 remains damaged, use Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now before considering a more destructive reset.
FAQ
Is msdaipp.dll a Windows system file?
Not universally. It was used in Windows-era data-access components, but Office, SharePoint, FrontPage and other legacy products could install it. The application that requests it determines the correct repair path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs msdaipp.dll safe?
The genuine Microsoft component is associated with Microsoft Data Access Component Internet Publishing Provider, but the filename alone proves nothing. Check the file’s location, digital signature and installation source. A copy in an unexpected writable folder should be treated cautiously.
Is msdaipp.dll part of Visual C++?
No. It is an older Microsoft data-access provider, not a Visual C++ runtime file.
Should I install MDAC 2.8 on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. Do not use the old MDAC 2.8 SP1 redistributable as a general repair on modern Windows. Windows Vista and later include the equivalent data-access components as part of the operating system.
Should I copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The correct location depends on the application and architecture. Manual copying can create a mismatched installation and leave the actual dependency or installer problem unresolved.
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
The application may be unable to load a dependency, may be using the wrong architecture, or may lack the correct registration and installation metadata. Repair the complete parent application.
Can SFC restore msdaipp.dll?
Only if the missing or damaged file belongs to protected Windows components covered by servicing. SFC will not necessarily restore a private copy installed by Office, SharePoint or another application.
Should I register msdaipp.dll with regsvr32?
Usually no. regsvr32 is not a universal repair command, and there is no basis for registering a randomly downloaded copy. Follow the original product’s supported repair procedure instead.
Do modern games normally use msdaipp.dll?
There is no reliable basis for treating it as a common modern game dependency. If a game reports it, use the game launcher’s repair or verification feature only when that game actually bundled the file, then reinstall the game from its legitimate source if necessary.
What is the safest overall fix?
Identify the program that triggers the message, repair or reinstall that program, check antivirus quarantine, and use DISM followed by SFC only when Windows corruption is plausible. Avoid standalone DLL downloads.
