“This application failed to start because msderun.dll was not found.”
The msderun.dll error usually means a legacy Visual Basic 6 application cannot find the Microsoft Data Environment Runtime component it needs. The safest repair is normally to restore the original application or its Data Environment installation, not to copy a DLL from the internet.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches your situation:
- The error appears when starting one older business, database, reporting, or VB6 application: repair or reinstall that application first.
- The error appeared after uninstalling another old program: reinstall the program that originally supplied the shared Data Environment components, or obtain its original deployment package.
- The file exists, but Visual Basic reports “Microsoft Data Environment Instance 1.0 is missing”: the COM component may need registration.
- The file disappeared suddenly: check Windows Security or your antivirus quarantine before reinstalling anything.
- The application was moved from another computer: reinstall it using its legitimate installer rather than copying only
msderun.dll. - Several Windows programs are failing, not just one legacy application: check Windows component health with DISM and SFC after checking the application installation.
- An old installer will not run on Windows 10 or Windows 11: try compatibility settings, use the vendor’s updated installer, or install the program in a supported virtual machine.
msderun.dll is a 32-bit Microsoft Data Environment Runtime file associated with Microsoft Data Environment Runtime 1.0 and Visual Basic 6-era Data Environment projects. It is not normally a core Windows system DLL.

What msderun.dll does
The Microsoft Data Environment Runtime supported database access and reporting features used by older Visual Basic applications. Applications that used Data Environment projects or Data Reports could require this runtime at launch.
You may encounter the file in:
- Compiled Visual Basic 6 applications
- Data Environment projects
- Data Reports applications
- Older database utilities
- Packaged accounting, inventory, or business software
- Internal office applications built with Visual Basic 6
Other related components may include msde.dll, Data Environment type libraries, report controls, database providers, and other legacy runtime files. This is why replacing one DLL rarely provides a complete repair.
Historical installations commonly placed the file under:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesDesignermsderun.dll
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may still use this location or another directory selected by the original installer. Do not move the file to C:WindowsSystem32 simply because Windows displayed a missing-DLL message.
Public file listings show more than one historical build and size. The commonly reported file is 32-bit version 6.0.88.4, but the correct build depends on the application and its deployment package. Do not assume that every file with the same name is interchangeable.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that needs the file
This is the most likely and safest fix.
Identify the affected application
First, record which program displays the error. Check:
- The title bar of the error dialog.
- The shortcut you used to start the program.
- The program path in the shortcut.
- The executable named in Event Viewer.
- The application listed in Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
To inspect a shortcut:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the application folder and executable name.
- Select Cancel without changing the shortcut.
To check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Open the entry and note the faulting application path.
Do not delete or rename files while identifying the program. The path tells you which installer or vendor package should be used.
Repair from Windows Settings
If the application supports repair:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Some traditional desktop programs show Modify, Repair, or Change instead:

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Uninstall.
- Select Repair when the installer offers it.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the application.
A successful repair should restore the runtime and allow the application to open without the msderun.dll message. It may also restore related files that the application needs later when opening a report or database form.
Reinstall from original media
If repair is unavailable:
- Back up the application’s data files and configuration.
- Locate the original installer, deployment share, CD, or vendor download.
- Close the application and any related database services.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or
appwiz.cpl. - Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as an administrator.
- Select the complete installation or the Data Environment, Data Reports, and database components when offered.
- Restart Windows again if requested.
- Test the application using its normal shortcut.
For an internally developed VB6 program, ask the developer or administrator for the complete deployment package. It should include the runtime files and registration information required by that particular application.
If uninstalling another legacy program caused the problem, reinstalling only the currently failing program may not restore every shared component. The original vendor package should be used to restore the complete component set.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A missing file may have been removed by Windows Security or another antivirus product.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions.
- Look for
msderun.dllor the affected application. - Read the detection details and original file path.
Do not restore the file solely because its name looks familiar. Restore it only when all of the following are true:
- It came from the legitimate application installation.
- The application vendor or your organization confirms the component.
- The file is in the expected application or component directory.
- The detection is consistent with a false positive rather than suspicious behavior.
After restoring a quarantined file, repair or reinstall the application. That gives you a clean copy and restores related dependencies. If antivirus repeatedly removes the file, do not keep restoring it blindly. Have the file and installer checked by your security administrator.
Fix 3: Register the existing 32-bit component
Registration is appropriate only when the correct file is already present but Windows or Visual Basic cannot find its COM registration.
It is not a substitute for installing the file. regsvr32 does not download dependencies, reconstruct a damaged installation, or make an arbitrary DLL safe.

Confirm the file first
Check these locations:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesDesignermsderun.dll
Also inspect the affected application’s own installation directory and any vendor-specified component directory.
To inspect the file:
- Right-click
msderun.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Confirm that the description identifies Microsoft Data Environment Runtime.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Review the signer and signature status.
- Do not use the file if its origin is unknown or its properties do not match the expected component.
Register on 64-bit Windows
Because msderun.dll is a 32-bit component, use the 32-bit registration utility from an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesCommon FilesDesignermsderun.dll"
- Select OK on the success message.
- Restart the affected application.
On 32-bit Windows, run:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesCommon FilesDesignermsderun.dll"
If the vendor package installed msde.dll beside it and the application documentation requires both components, register the related file from the same trusted installation:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesCommon FilesDesignermsde.dll"
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesCommon FilesDesignermsderun.dll"
Use the System32 version of regsvr32.exe instead on 32-bit Windows.

Interpret registration errors
- “DllRegisterServer succeeded” means registration completed. Test the program.
- “The module was loaded but the entry point was not found” can indicate the wrong DLL, wrong architecture, or a file that does not expose the required COM registration function.
- “The specified module could not be found” may mean the DLL itself is missing or that a dependency such as
msde.dllis missing. - Access denied usually means the Command Prompt was not elevated or security software blocked the operation.
- Registration succeeds but the program still fails usually indicates missing related files, incorrect application configuration, or a different component failure.
If registration fails, reinstall the complete application or Data Environment component set instead of repeatedly trying different copies of the DLL.
Fix 4: Use the original VB6 or Data Environment package
For a compiled program, the application’s installer is the correct source. For a development computer, the original Visual Basic 6 or Data Environment installation may be required.
The Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Service Pack 6 Cumulative Update is an official x86 package, but it is a security update and should not be treated as a guaranteed standalone msderun.dll installer. It may be relevant to a managed VB6 development environment, but it does not replace the application vendor’s deployment package.
When working with an old installer:
- Copy the installer to a local folder.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try the Windows version recommended by the software vendor.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer again.
If setup still fails, contact the software vendor or internal developer for a current deployment package. Do not extract a DLL from an unrelated computer unless the application owner confirms that the computers use the same package and architecture.

Fix 5: Check Windows component health
msderun.dll is normally an application component, so SFC and DISM are not the primary repair tools for it. They are useful when the missing-file error is part of broader Windows corruption or several unrelated programs are failing.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
After restarting:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, that does not prove that msderun.dll is installed. The file may still need to be restored by the application installer.
Manually tracking which Windows components changed while repeating DISM and SFC can be time-consuming. Do not expect modern Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX, or a generic Windows update to supply the Microsoft Data Environment Runtime.
Fix 6: Check Windows Features only when the application requires them
Windows Features generally do not install msderun.dll, but an old application may separately require a Windows compatibility component.
To review optional features:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review enabled features against the application vendor’s documentation.
- Enable a feature only when the application specifically requires it.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not enable random legacy features as a substitute for reinstalling the application. If the program requires a particular .NET or database compatibility component, use the version and package specified by its vendor.

A device driver does not normally restore msderun.dll. Driver work is relevant only if the legacy program also depends on a printer, scanner, database device, or other hardware and continues failing after the runtime is restored.
To check drivers:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Printers, Imaging devices, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider and driver status.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer or your organization.
If you are also hunting through Device Manager for several stale drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by its full version; it is optional and will not replace the application installer responsible for msderun.dll.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid websites offering an isolated msderun.dll download. A random copy may:
- Contain malware or unwanted modifications
- Be the wrong historical build
- Be the wrong architecture
- Lack its COM registration
- Require missing files such as
msde.dll - Conflict with the application’s deployment package
- Leave the application broken after the next update or repair
Never copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 merely to silence the error. Never overwrite a trusted application copy with an arbitrary download.

Use the original application installer, the software vendor’s deployment media, or an official Microsoft package appropriate to the installed VB6 environment. Microsoft’s official regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s behavior, but registration still requires a legitimate compatible DLL and its dependencies.
Verify the repair
After repairing or reinstalling:
- Confirm that the application opens normally.
- Open the database or report feature that previously failed.
- Confirm that the program’s shortcut still points to the correct executable.
- Check that
msderun.dllis located in the application or expected Designer component directory. - Review Properties > Details and Digital Signatures.
- Confirm that antivirus no longer reports the file.
- Avoid moving or renaming the restored file.
If the program starts but reports a different missing component, reinstall the complete package rather than adding unrelated DLLs one at a time. A compiled application may need only runtime files, while opening or editing a VB6 project may require additional design-time registrations.

Is msderun.dll a Windows system file?
Normally no. It is a Microsoft application component associated with the legacy Microsoft Data Environment Runtime and Visual Basic 6-era software.
Can I download msderun.dll by itself?
You should not. A standalone copy may be unsafe, incompatible, unregistered, or missing dependencies. Restore it through the application or development package that originally installed it.
Why does a 32-bit DLL matter on 64-bit Windows?
A 32-bit application requires 32-bit versions of its components. Use the 32-bit regsvr32.exe from %windir%SysWOW64 on 64-bit Windows.
Should I run SFC first?
Only when broader Windows corruption is suspected. SFC and DISM normally do not restore third-party legacy application files. Repair the affected application first.

Why does registration fail even though the file exists?
The file may be the wrong architecture, damaged, missing dependencies, or not a COM server that can be registered independently. Reinstall the complete trusted component set.
Why did the error appear after removing another program?
Older installers sometimes treated shared legacy files as private files. Uninstalling one program may have removed components still used by another. Reinstall the legitimate owning application or its complete runtime package.
Is Microsoft’s VB6 service pack a standalone fix?
No guaranteed standalone msderun.dll repair should be assumed. The official x86 VB6 update may be relevant to a VB6 environment, but the affected application’s original installer remains the preferred source.
What if the old installer cannot run on Windows 11?
Try the installer’s compatibility settings and administrator mode, then request an updated deployment package. If the software cannot be made reliable on the current system, isolate it in a supported virtual machine rather than downloading replacement DLLs.
