The MSI B350M Gaming Pro can be the sensible buy when it is substantially cheaper or in better condition and your build only needs two RAM slots and one M.2 drive. With either used board, verify the exact model, revision and installed BIOS before assuming a Ryzen 3 2200G will boot.
Compatibility and BIOS come before the specification checklist
Both boards use the AM4 socket and are documented for Ryzen processors, but the installed firmware on a particular used board determines CPU support. Before buying, identify the exact board model and revision, then check its CPU support list and BIOS release notes. If the installed BIOS does not support the 2200G, the board may require an update with a supported processor or through a service provider. Do not assume either board has BIOS flashback, and do not flash blindly.
The Ryzen 3 2200G is a Raven Ridge APU. ASRock’s BIOS support page lists B450M Pro4 version 10.62 dated September 24, 2026, with a warning: ASRock do NOT recommend updating this BIOS if you are going to use Pinnacle, Raven or Summit Ridge CPU on your system.
Read the complete version history and model-specific instructions for the BIOS currently on your board rather than treating the newest version as automatically correct. ASRock BIOS support
MSI’s published material uses broad Ryzen-series wording; that is not proof that every second-hand B350M Gaming Pro has the right firmware for a 2200G. The same verification rule applies to MSI. The official board documents are the MSI datasheet and MSI specification page.

Specification differences that affect this build
| Decision axis | MSI B350M Gaming Pro | ASRock B450M PRO4 | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Socket, chipset and size | AM4, B350, micro-ATX | AM4, B450, micro-ATX | Both fit a micro-ATX case, subject to normal case and BIOS checks. |
| Memory | Two DDR4 DIMM slots; up to 32GB listed | Four DDR4 DIMM slots; up to 128GB listed | ASRock leaves two slots open for later expansion. Supported speed depends on the CPU and configuration; advertised overclocked rates are not guaranteed plug-and-play speeds. |
| M.2 and SATA | One M.2 socket and four SATA ports | One PCIe Gen3x4 Ultra M.2, one SATA M.2 and four SATA ports | ASRock offers two M.2 connectors, but M2_2 shares lanes with SATA3_3: using one disables the other. |
| Expansion slots | One PCIe 3.0 x16 and two PCIe 2.0 x1 | One PCIe 3.0 x16, one PCIe 2.0 x16-length slot at x4 for relevant Ryzen CPUs, and one PCIe 2.0 x1 | ASRock provides another long slot, but it is electrically x4, not a second x16 connection. |
| Display outputs | VGA, DVI-D and HDMI listed | D-Sub, DVI-D and HDMI; integrated Radeon Vega graphics for Ryzen APUs listed | For a graphics-card-free 2200G system, confirm the board manual’s processor qualification before relying on an output. |
| Rear USB listings | Datasheet lists six USB 3.1 Gen1 and six USB 2.0 total | Two rear USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-A/Type-C, four rear Gen1 and two USB 2.0 | Compare the actual rear connectors and speeds you need; published totals can include headers. |

Memory planning: the biggest long-term difference
Choose MSI for a fixed, modest configuration
Two DIMM slots and a 32GB listed ceiling are adequate for a simple 2200G gaming or general-purpose build if you install the final capacity now. Upgrading later may mean replacing both modules rather than adding a pair.

- AMD Socket AM4: Ready to support AMD Ryzen 5000 / Ryzen 4000 / Ryzen 3000 Series processors
- Enhanced Power Solution: Digital twin 10 plus3 phases VRM solution with premium chokes and capacitors for steady power delivery.
- Advanced Thermal Armor: Enlarged VRM heatsinks layered with 5 W/mk thermal pads for better heat dissipation. Pre-Installed I/O Armor for quicker PC DIY assembly.
- Boost Your Memory Performance: Compatible with DDR4 memory and supports 4 x DIMMs with AMD EXPO Memory Module Support.
- Comprehensive Connectivity: WIFI 6, PCIe 4.0, 2x M.2 Slots, 1GbE LAN, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C
Choose ASRock for staged upgrades
Four slots and a 128GB listed maximum make the B450M PRO4 more forgiving if you want to start with two modules and add more memory later. Use matched dual-channel modules where possible, and check the board and processor support tables before selecting a high advertised memory speed.
Storage: two M.2 sockets are not two interchangeable sockets
The MSI provides one M.2 connector alongside four SATA ports. ASRock adds a PCIe Gen3x4 Ultra M.2 socket and a second M.2 socket intended for SATA devices, also alongside four SATA ports. Confirm whether an SSD is PCIe/NVMe or SATA before purchase. On ASRock, M2_2 and SATA3_3 share lanes; populating either disables the other, so map your drive and SATA-device layout first.

Expansion and graphics-card considerations
Both boards provide a primary PCIe 3.0 x16 slot for a graphics card. MSI’s remaining slots are two short PCIe 2.0 x1 connections. ASRock trades one of those for a second x16-length connector that runs at x4 with relevant Ryzen processors. It is useful for a compatible add-in card or secondary expansion device, but it should not be described as a second full-bandwidth graphics slot.
Both boards list VGA/DVI-D/HDMI outputs. ASRock explicitly documents integrated Radeon Vega graphics for Ryzen APUs. MSI’s detailed graphics-output section attaches a processor qualification naming 7th Generation A-series/Athlon processors, so its wording is not a clean confirmation for the 2200G. If you plan to use the APU without a discrete card, verify the exact manual and support information for the board in hand.

A buying checklist for used boards
- Confirm the label on the PCB matches B350M Gaming Pro or B450M PRO4 and record the revision.
- Ask for the installed BIOS version or a clear firmware-screen photograph; compare it with the manufacturer’s CPU support and release notes.
- Inspect the AM4 socket, DIMM latches, M.2 retaining screw, PCIe slots, video connectors and USB ports for damage or corrosion.
- Check that the seller includes the correct I/O shield and that the board can be returned if it fails to POST.
- Plan RAM, SSD protocol and lane-sharing before ordering parts.
- Test POST with the 2200G, one memory kit and the intended display connection when possible.
Which board should you choose?
Pick the ASRock B450M PRO4 when
- You want four memory slots or a memory ceiling beyond 32GB.
- You expect to use two M.2 drives and have checked the SATA3_3 lane-sharing rule.
- You need USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-A/Type-C or an additional x16-length expansion slot.
- The specific board’s BIOS history is confirmed to support your 2200G setup.
Pick the MSI B350M Gaming Pro when
- Two DIMM slots, one M.2 drive and two short expansion slots meet your complete plan.
- It is clearly cheaper or in demonstrably better condition than the ASRock board.
- You have verified BIOS support and do not need the ASRock’s extra connectors.
Published specifications do not establish current listing prices, seller reliability, condition, comparative value or independent performance for these exact board-and-APU combinations. Treat those as local, deal-specific variables rather than assuming a universal value winner. A Reddit user asked the same practical question about BIOS updates for this pairing; the thread is useful for seeing the wording of that concern, not as authoritative compatibility evidence: Reddit discussion.
The Bottom Line
For most upgrade-minded Ryzen 3 2200G builds, the ASRock B450M PRO4 is the more expandable specification choice. Buy the MSI B350M Gaming Pro instead when its condition or price is better and its two-slot, one-M.2 layout is all you need—after verifying the exact BIOS and revision.
