mslid.dll Missing: Find the Caller and Repair Office Safely

“The program can’t start because mslid.dll is missing from your computer.” If mslid.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair the Microsoft application that owns it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Which fix applies to you

Use the description that matches what you see:

  • Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, or another Office program shows the error: run Office Quick Repair, then Online Repair if necessary.
  • The error appeared after an Office update or rollback: update Office, restart Windows, and run Online Repair.
  • The file disappeared after an antivirus scan: check Windows Security Protection History before restoring anything.
  • The error names a launcher, packaged application, or server product: repair, update, or reinstall that specific application. Do not copy an Office DLL into its folder.
  • The file exists but Windows reports “not designed to run on Windows” or 0xc000007b: suspect corruption, a dependent DLL, or a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch.
  • Several unrelated Windows programs are failing: install pending Windows updates, then use DISM and SFC.
  • A file named mslid.dll is in an unusual folder or has no Microsoft signature: treat it as suspicious and scan the system.

The exact caller matters. The filename alone cannot identify which program is failing.

What mslid.dll is

mslid.dll is a Microsoft DLL associated with Microsoft Language Identification. Its file description is commonly shown as Microsoft Language Identification DLL, and its publisher is Microsoft Corporation.

The file is primarily associated with Microsoft Office installations and Office-based products. A documented Office path is similar to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootvfsProgramFilesCommonX86Microsoft SharedPROOFMSLID.DLL

The exact path depends on the Office edition, installation technology, processor architecture, and installed components. Office Web Apps Server has also included Mslid.dll in Microsoft update packages.

This is not normally a standalone Windows system DLL. Windows’ own Extended Linguistic Services use components such as Elscore.dll; Microsoft documents language detection as part of ELS rather than identifying mslid.dll as a normal System32 component. See Microsoft’s documentation for Extended Linguistic Services and Microsoft Language Detection.

Microsoft has not published a complete list of every Office generation and build that contains the file. Do not assume that every valid copy has the same version, size, location, or architecture.

Why Office requests it

Language identification supports Office language-related features, including functions used by proofing and text-processing components. A damaged or incomplete Office installation can therefore cause the error when Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, or another Office component starts.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

The error can also appear when:

  • An Office update stopped before all files were replaced.
  • A Click-to-Run operation left files from incompatible builds.
  • Antivirus software quarantined the file.
  • The application is loading a DLL of the wrong architecture.
  • A dependency required by mslid.dll is missing or damaged.
  • A third-party program packages or calls Office components.
  • The file was manually copied from another computer or Office release.

The message may say that the file is missing even when it is present. Windows sometimes reports the name of the first DLL involved in a failed load, while the actual problem is a dependent DLL or incompatible architecture.

First, identify the caller and inspect the file

Before changing files, find the program that displays the error. The title bar, message window, shortcut, or Event Viewer entry usually identifies it.

Check the installation path

If the message appears when launching Office, right-click the program’s shortcut and choose Properties. On the Shortcut tab, note the Target path. You can also open Task Manager, right-click a running Office process, and choose Open file location.

Look for mslid.dll under the same trusted Office installation rather than in a random download directory. A path under an Office folder is consistent with the file’s known association. A copy in a temporary folder, a user download folder, or an unrelated program directory needs further verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy the file into:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Those folders are not general-purpose destinations for Office-private files.

Check publisher and digital signature

If the file exists:

  1. Right-click mslid.dll.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  4. Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
  5. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
  6. On the Details tab, check the description, company, original filename, and version information.

A legitimate file should identify Microsoft Corporation as the company or signer. A familiar filename does not prove that a file is safe. If the signature is missing, invalid, or belongs to another publisher, do not restore or register that copy.

Check 32-bit and 64-bit architecture

The Office process and its DLLs must use compatible architecture. A 32-bit Office installation needs the matching 32-bit Office DLL even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A 64-bit DLL copied into a 32-bit Office directory, or an old DLL copied into a newer installation, can produce:

  • “Not designed to run on Windows”

  • Entry-point errors
  • A message saying the module could not be loaded

The safest way to correct architecture problems is to repair or reinstall the Office installation that called the file. Do not attempt to solve them by swapping files between System32, SysWOW64, and Office folders.

Fix 1: Run Office Quick Repair

Quick Repair is the fastest first step when an Office application reports the error.

Windows 11

  1. Close Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and other Office programs.
  2. Open Start > Settings.
  3. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  4. Find Microsoft 365 or the relevant Microsoft Office entry.
  5. Select the three-dot button beside it.
  6. Choose Modify.
  7. Select Quick Repair.
  8. Choose Repair and confirm any prompts.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Open the program that originally produced the error.

Windows 10

  1. Close all Office programs.
  2. Open Start > Settings.
  3. Select Apps > Apps & features.
  4. Select Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
  5. Choose Modify.
  6. Select Quick Repair, then choose Repair.
  7. Restart Windows and test the caller again.

If the application opens normally afterward, do not download or manually copy mslid.dll. The repair restored the managed Office installation.

If Quick Repair completes but the same message returns, continue with Online Repair.

Fix 2: Run Office Online Repair

Online Repair is more thorough. Microsoft says it repairs or replaces the complete Office installation, so it can correct missing, damaged, or mismatched private files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeat the Modify steps above, but choose:

  1. Online Repair
  2. Repair
  3. Confirm the repair
  4. Keep the computer connected to the internet
  5. Restart Windows when it finishes
  6. Test the original Office program

Online Repair can take longer and may require Office to be reconfigured. It is the preferred repair when mslid.dll is missing from an Office directory or has an invalid signature.

Use Microsoft’s Office application repair instructions if the labels differ on your Windows build.

If Office is not listed

If Microsoft 365 or Office does not appear in Installed apps or Programs and Features:

  1. Confirm which executable displays the error.
  2. Check whether the program is a standalone Office-based product.
  3. Use that product’s own Repair, Modify, or Change option.
  4. If it has no repair option, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  5. Reinstall it using the original Microsoft installer or the product’s official installer.

Do not use a DLL from another Office installation to fill the gap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Update Office before reinstalling it

A failed or incomplete Office update can leave an executable and mslid.dll at incompatible revisions.

If any Office application opens:

  1. Start Word, Excel, Outlook, or PowerPoint.
  2. Select File > Account.
  3. Select Update Options.
  4. Choose Update Now.
  5. Allow the update to finish.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Test the affected program.

Microsoft documents this process in its Office stopped-working and update troubleshooting.

If no Office application opens, run Online Repair instead. If repair cannot complete, uninstall Office and reinstall it from Microsoft’s official installation process. A clean reinstall is appropriate when the installation is incomplete, the repair repeatedly fails, or the error returns immediately after repair.

Record the Office edition and build before uninstalling if you need to reproduce the installation. Do not preserve a questionable mslid.dll by copying it elsewhere and putting it back later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection History

If mslid.dll vanished directly after a scan, Windows Security may have quarantined it.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Choose Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Expand the relevant entry and inspect its path and detection details.

Only consider restoring a file if all of the following are true:

  • It came from the expected Microsoft Office directory.
  • Its digital signature is valid and belongs to Microsoft Corporation.
  • The Office installation itself is trusted.
  • The detection is clearly a false positive.

Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. Do not allow a file merely because its name is mslid.dll. If the file is unsigned, located somewhere unexpected, or associated with other suspicious activity, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.

For suspected compromise:

  1. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
  2. Select Scan options.
  3. Choose Full scan, then select Scan now.
  4. If you suspect active malware, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same area.

See Microsoft’s guidance for Protection History and virus and threat protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC

DISM and SFC are useful when many Windows applications are failing, Windows Update has been damaged, or the computer has wider component corruption. They are not the primary fix for an Office-private DLL under the Office installation directory.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Choose Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the original application.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions if either command reports an error.

Neither command is guaranteed to restore an Office-owned mslid.dll. If the error remains and only Office is affected, return to Online Repair or reinstall Office.

Repeating SFC and DISM without checking what changed rarely helps. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds when manually hunting through Windows corruption reports becomes guesswork; any repair action is performed by the full version, and it is not required when Office Repair is the clear cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Do not use Device Manager as an Office DLL repair

Device Manager does not repair Microsoft Office files. It manages hardware drivers.

Use it only when the error is actually connected to a hardware device or a separate application that depends on a damaged driver:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Choose Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant hardware category.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Choose Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

If the problem began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when that option is available. For a damaged device installation, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.

Do not expect driver changes to restore an Office language-identification DLL. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale drivers, but its free scan only reports findings and driver installation is handled by the full version; reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application ships the missing file.

Fix 7: Check Windows Features only when the caller requires one

Turning Windows Features on or off is not a normal fix for mslid.dll. Do not enable random language packs, legacy frameworks, or compatibility features just because a DLL message appears.

If the error belongs to a program that explicitly documents a Windows optional component:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Optional features.
  2. Select View features or More Windows features.
  3. Locate the named component.
  4. Install it only if the application’s documentation requires it.
  5. Restart Windows and test the application.

On Windows 10, open Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off. If the caller is Microsoft Office, use Office Repair instead.

Why regsvr32 mslid.dll usually does not help

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented functions associated with mslid.dll are language-identification functions, including LidInit, LidCheck, LidLanguages, and LidTerminate. That does not establish it as a self-registering COM server.

Running this command:

regsvr32 mslid.dll

may produce an error such as a missing entry point or loading failure. Even if it displays a success message in an unusual setup, registration does not replace a missing dependency, correct a wrong-bitness DLL, or repair Office servicing.

Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains its intended use. Repair the owning application instead.

Why DLL download sites are the wrong fix

Do not download mslid.dll from a random DLL website. That copy may be:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Malware or a tampered file
  • The wrong Office release
  • The wrong processor architecture
  • Missing a valid Microsoft signature
  • Incompatible with the calling executable
  • Unable to solve a missing dependent DLL

Manual copying also bypasses Office servicing. The file may disappear again during the next update or leave the installation with mismatched components.

Safe sources are:

  • Office Quick Repair or Online Repair
  • The original Microsoft Office installer
  • Microsoft-provided Office updates
  • Windows Update for Windows components
  • The official repair or reinstall process for a third-party application that bundles Office functionality

If the error persists after Online Repair

Collect evidence before trying another replacement file:

  1. Record the exact error text.
  2. Record the executable that displays it.
  3. Note the full path where the program expects mslid.dll.
  4. Check the file’s Microsoft signature.
  5. Note whether the Office installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  6. Open Event Viewer by right-clicking Start and selecting it.
  7. Check Windows Logs > Application for an error at the time of the failure.
  8. Note any named dependency, side-by-side error, or application fault.
  9. Install pending Windows and Office updates.
  10. Perform a clean official Office reinstall.

If only one Windows account is affected, test the program in a newly created Windows profile. A damaged profile can prevent an otherwise healthy installation from loading correctly.

If the error comes from a game, launcher, or packaged application, use that program’s official Verify files, Repair, or Reinstall function. Do not substitute a DLL taken from Office or another computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevention

  • Let Office updates finish before shutting down Windows.
  • Keep Microsoft Defender and Windows security updates current.
  • Do not delete unfamiliar files from Office directories manually.
  • Keep Office architecture consistent with the required add-ins and integrations.
  • Avoid copying DLLs between computers or Office releases.
  • If antivirus quarantines the file, verify its path and signature before taking action.
  • Keep a record of the application that triggered the error rather than treating every DLL message as a Windows-system problem.

FAQ

Is mslid.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is a real Microsoft DLL associated primarily with Microsoft Office and described as Microsoft Language Identification DLL. A file with that name is not automatically legitimate unless its path and Microsoft digital signature also check out.

Is mslid.dll part of Windows?

It should not normally be treated as a Windows System32 DLL. Windows language services use other documented components. Repair the Office or Office-based application that requests mslid.dll.

Which Office versions contain it?

Public records show the file in Office installations and in an Office Web Apps Server update. Microsoft has not published a complete package matrix covering every Office generation, edition, build, and architecture.

Should I run regsvr32 mslid.dll?

Generally no. The command is intended for self-registering DLLs, and it does not repair a missing Office file, dependency, or architecture mismatch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download mslid.dll?

Do not use random DLL download sites sites. Restore it through Office Online Repair or the original Microsoft installer.

What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?

It commonly indicates corruption, a wrong-architecture DLL, an incompatible Office build, or a dependency failure. It does not prove that Windows itself is missing a system file.

Will SFC restore mslid.dll?

Not usually if the file belongs to Office and is stored under the Office installation directory. Use SFC and DISM for broader Windows corruption, while using Office Repair for Office files.

What if the file returns after every repair?

Check antivirus Protection History, confirm the Microsoft signature, inspect Event Viewer for a dependent-DLL error, and perform a clean official reinstall. If only one user account fails, test a new Windows profile.
