Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →mso40uiwin32client.dll belongs to Microsoft Office, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Office installation that contains it. Do not download a loose copy of the DLL or copy it into System32; that can create a version mismatch and leave the underlying Office problem unresolved.
What this file actually does
mso40uiwin32client.dll is a Microsoft Office 16 shared component associated primarily with Office 2016 and also found in some Click-to-Run Microsoft 365 and Office installations. Its exact internal function is not publicly documented in the Microsoft sources available for this file.
It is an Office component, not a normal Windows system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET component. Typical locations are:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedOffice16
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesMicrosoft SharedOffice16
Click-to-Run Office may store the component inside its virtual file system instead of exposing it in the same way as an MSI installation.

Microsoft update records list separate architectures. For example, KB5002469 documented these Office 2016 files:
| Office component | Example version | Example size |
|---|---|---|
| x86 | 16.0.5435.1001 | 7,435,136 bytes |
| x64 | 16.0.5435.1000 | 9,362,496 bytes |
These are documented examples, not universal current versions. The correct file depends on your Office edition, architecture, and build.

| What you see | Most likely explanation | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because mso40uiWin32Client.dll is missing” | Damaged, incomplete, or quarantined Office files | Repair Office |
“Is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” with status 0xc000012f |

| Word, Excel, or Outlook crashes and Event Viewer names the DLL | The DLL may only be where the crash became visible | Test Safe Mode and add-ins |
| The problem started after antivirus activity | The file may have been quarantined | Check Protection History |
| Only Outlook fails | An add-in, profile, or Office build may be involved | Start Outlook in Safe Mode |
| Windows has other update or system-file errors | Windows corruption may be contributing | Run DISM and SFC |
The file appears in System32 or SysWOW64 |
It may not be the genuine Office component | Do not replace it manually |
Microsoft reports have documented this file in Word, Excel, and Outlook failures. A faulting-module entry does not prove that the DLL itself is defective. An add-in, Office build, profile, or dependent component can trigger a crash inside a valid Microsoft file.
Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Office
Repair is the most likely solution because it replaces damaged or incomplete Office files with the correct files for your installation.
- Close Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and every other Office application.
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Apps & features.
- Search for Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or your installed Office edition.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Modify.
- If the installer offers Quick Repair, try it first if you want the faster repair.
- If Quick Repair does not solve the error, return to the same screen and choose Online Repair.
- Select Repair and allow Office to complete the process.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the application that previously failed.
Microsoft describes Online Repair as the more thorough option because it repairs the complete Office installation. It may require an internet connection and can reset or replace more Office components than Quick Repair. See Microsoft’s Office repair instructions.
For an MSI-based Office 2016 installation, the choices may appear as Repair, Continue, and Close rather than Quick Repair and Online Repair:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft Office.
- Choose Change.
- Select Repair, then Continue.
- Restart Windows when the repair finishes.
If repair reports that it cannot continue, note the exact message. Do not compensate by copying a DLL from another computer.
Fix 2: Confirm the Office architecture and update it
Windows may be 64-bit while Office is 32-bit. Those are separate choices. A 32-bit Office installation needs the x86 Office component, while a 64-bit Office installation needs the x64 component.
To identify the Office architecture:
- Open any Office application that still starts.
- Select File > Account.
- Select About Word, About Excel, or the equivalent option.
- Read the information shown near the top of the dialog. It should identify whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit and show the build.
If no Office application starts, check Installed apps or Programs and Features for the edition name, then repair that existing installation rather than installing a DLL manually.
For Click-to-Run Office:
- Open Word, Excel, or another Office application.
- Select File > Account.
- Select Update Options > Update Now.
- Wait for the update to finish.
- Restart the Office application and test again.
For MSI-based Office 2016, use Microsoft Update, the applicable Microsoft Update Catalog entry, or the official Microsoft Download Center package identified by the relevant Microsoft update article. KB5002469 lists official x86 and x64 packages named:
msodll40ui2016-kb5002469-fullfile-x86-glb.exe
msodll40ui2016-kb5002469-fullfile-x64-glb.exe
Do not assume an MSI update applies to Click-to-Run Office. Microsoft distinguishes these installation technologies, and installing the wrong package can fail or leave the original problem unchanged.
Fix 3: Test Office in Safe Mode
A startup crash can be caused by a COM add-in rather than by a damaged mso40uiwin32client.dll.

Open the Run dialog with Windows key + R, enter the command for the affected application, and press Enter:
winword /safe
excel /safe
outlook.exe /safe
If the application opens in Safe Mode:
- Select File > Options.
- Select Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins.
- Select Go.
- Clear the check box for every add-in.
- Restart Office normally.
- Re-enable add-ins one at a time until the failure returns.
The last add-in enabled is a strong suspect. Update it from its original vendor or remove it if it is no longer needed.
If only Outlook is affected and Safe Mode works, test with a new Outlook profile after disabling add-ins. Open Control Panel, search for Mail, select Mail, choose Show Profiles, and create a new profile. Microsoft provides additional Outlook troubleshooting guidance.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine an Office file after an update or after detecting suspicious file activity.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry naming
mso40uiwin32client.dllor an Office folder. - Check the detected path and the reason for the action.
Do not blindly choose Allow on device. If the alert identifies malware, leave the file removed and reinstall Office from Microsoft. If it appears to be a false positive, first verify that the file came from the expected Office16 folder and has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
To inspect a file signature:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
If the file is missing after quarantine, repair Office instead of restoring an unverified binary. Microsoft explains how Protection History records these actions.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other symptoms exist
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows component-store and protected Windows system-file problems. They normally do not restore an Office-owned DLL, so use them as secondary checks rather than as the primary repair.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test Office again.
DISM may take time and can appear to pause. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations even when Office is damaged, because Office files are not normally protected Windows system files.

When manually repeating DISM and SFC becomes difficult to interpret, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its repair function is available in the full version, but repairing or reinstalling Office remains the definitive fix for this Office-owned file.
Use Microsoft’s DISM documentation and SFC documentation if either command returns an error.
Fix 6: Investigate graphics or driver faults only when evidence points there
A graphics driver is a lower-probability cause. Consider it only when the failure is a rendering crash and Event Viewer identifies a graphics driver or display component.
To inspect the event:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Find the error at the time of the crash.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, exception code, and any named driver.
If a display driver is implicated:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the relevant adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and check whether Roll Back Driver is available. Do not change drivers merely because the event mentions mso40uiwin32client.dll.

Do not run:
regsvr32 mso40uiwin32client.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a generic missing-DLL repair command, and an ordinary Office application component may not support that registration method.

or into a game or unrelated application folder. This can load the wrong architecture or version and can introduce an untrusted binary.
Fix 7: Completely reinstall Office
Use a complete reinstall when repair fails repeatedly, the file was removed by malware, or the Office installation is visibly incomplete.
Recommended Free Tools
Before removing Office, confirm that you can reinstall it from your Microsoft account, licensed media, or an organization-managed deployment.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall Office from the official Microsoft source used by your license or organization.
- Apply Office updates.
- Test Word, Excel, Outlook, or the application that originally failed.
For MSI installations, removal may instead be performed through Control Panel > Programs and Features. If the normal uninstall fails, use Microsoft’s official Office removal guidance rather than a third-party DLL utility.
If the file was detected as malware, do not restore it. Remove the compromised installation and reinstall Office from a trusted Microsoft source.
Office 2016 support note
Office 2016 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Existing installations may continue to run, but they no longer receive normal security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. If repair and reinstall do not provide a stable result, moving to a supported Office release may be the appropriate long-term solution. See Microsoft’s Office 2016 and Office 2019 support notice.

Is mso40uiwin32client.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is primarily an Office16 component. It should not normally be downloaded separately or placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is this file used by Word, Excel, and Outlook?
Microsoft reports have involved all three applications, along with other Office programs and third-party Office integrations. The failing application helps identify whether an add-in or profile is involved.
Should I download the missing DLL?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or belong to a different Office build. Repair Office through Microsoft instead.
Does a faulting-module report prove the DLL is corrupt?
No. An add-in, Office build, Outlook profile, or dependent component can cause a crash that is reported at this DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I run SFC first?
Only if Windows has broader corruption symptoms. SFC and DISM are secondary checks here because this is an Office-owned component.
When should I stop troubleshooting?
Stop manual troubleshooting when Office repair fails repeatedly, antivirus identifies malware, or the installation cannot be updated. Record the Office edition, architecture, build, file path, signature status, and Event Viewer details, then perform an official removal and reinstall or contact your organization’s administrator.
