msobjs.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. If Windows says it is missing, repair Windows’ protected files and component store rather than downloading a loose DLL from an unofficial website.
The 60-second answer
- Check Windows Security quarantine and restore the file only if it is the genuine Microsoft copy.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM first, then SFC:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart again.
msobjs.dll is associated with Windows security-auditing message resources. Its reported description is “System object audit names,” and public Windows file records identify it in system directories such as C:WindowsSystem32 and, on 64-bit Windows, C:WindowsSysWOW64.Microsoft’s Windows file listings

What is msobjs.dll?
msobjs.dll is part of Microsoft Windows, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX package, .NET component, or a particular game. It supplies Windows security-auditing message resources used to identify system objects and audit-related information.
The exact version, size, architecture, and language resources depend on your Windows release and servicing level. Older public records show different metadata for different Windows versions, so a single file size or version should not be treated as universal.NirSoft file information
On a normal installation, look in these locations:
C:WindowsSystem32msobjs.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64msobjs.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Do not assume that copying one file into the other directory is a valid repair.
What usually causes the error?
The most likely causes are:
- A protected Windows file was deleted or corrupted.
- A Windows update or upgrade did not complete correctly.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Disk or filesystem corruption damaged Windows components.
- Malware removed or replaced a system file.
- An application is loading a suspicious copy from its own folder.
- A damaged application, permissions issue, or incorrect program path is producing a misleading loader message.
There is no authoritative evidence that one specific game or application uniquely causes every msobjs.dll error. The program named in the message may simply be the first application to request a damaged Windows component.
Fix 1: Install updates and restart
A failed servicing operation can leave Windows components inconsistent. Start with Windows Update before replacing anything manually.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
- Try the affected program again.
If Windows Update itself reports errors, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, then repeat the update check.
On supported Windows 11 installations, you may also see Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the same Windows version while repairing system files and components, while preserving applications, personal files, and settings. The option is not available on every Windows 11 configuration.Microsoft’s repair reinstall guidance
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair for a missing or damaged msobjs.dll.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter and wait for it to finish.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as a source for protected system files. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them, or that it found no integrity violations. Try the affected application after restarting.

If you repeatedly run SFC without knowing whether the underlying component store is healthy, you can end up repeating the same failed repair cycle. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what needs attention, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows DISM and SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.
If DISM cannot find repair files
Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source when Windows Update cannot provide the required files:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual repair-source path. The source must match your installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. Do not substitute an arbitrary Windows folder or a copy from another computer.Microsoft’s SFC and DISM instructions
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed a file after detecting suspicious activity, or it may have quarantined a legitimate file during cleanup. The available evidence does not establish a specific antivirus false-positive incident for msobjs.dll, so verify before restoring anything.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
msobjs.dll. - Check the recorded path and detection details.
- Restore it only if the path is a normal Windows directory and the file can be verified as Microsoft-signed.
- Run a Full scan afterward.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to force a DLL into System32. If the detection concerns a copy inside a game or application folder, do not restore it automatically. Quarantine the suspicious copy, update the security software, and investigate the application instead.
Fix 4: Verify the path and Microsoft signature
A missing Windows copy and a malicious lookalike are different problems.
- Open File Explorer.
- Check:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
- Right-click
msobjs.dllif present and select Properties. - Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft.
The file’s expected identity is Microsoft Corporation, with the product listed as Microsoft Windows Operating System. A copy in a random download folder, temporary directory, application directory, or user profile should not automatically be trusted.
If the file is unsigned, has an unexpected publisher, or behaves suspiciously, do not overwrite it with another copy. Run a full malware scan and use Windows repair commands instead.
Fix 5: Repair the affected application
If DISM and SFC report no problems, the error may come from the program that is trying to load the file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
First identify what changed:
- Did the error start immediately after installing or updating an application?
- Does only one program fail?
- Does the program use its own bundled DLL directory?
- Does the error disappear when starting another Windows application?
Then repair the application:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the program and test it.
If Repair does not help, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. Back up application data first. Do not install a random msobjs.dll beside the program executable.
A Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX runtime, or .NET repair is not a normal fix for this file. Use those only when the error names a DLL belonging to that runtime.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to hardware
A driver is not the normal owner of msobjs.dll, and Device Manager will not replace a protected Windows message resource. Driver work is relevant only if the failure began with a device problem, a hardware-related application, or a recent driver update.

To check manually:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the failing application.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Avoid replacing every driver just because one DLL error appeared. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing which drivers are stale, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 msobjs.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Available metadata identifies msobjs.dll as a Windows audit-message resource rather than an ordinary self-registering COM server.Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation
Running regsvr32 may produce another error without repairing the missing or corrupted component.
Why downloading or copying the DLL is unsafe
A standalone DLL download can contain malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible servicing level. It can also leave the component store damaged, so Windows removes or replaces the file later.
Do not copy msobjs.dll from another PC, an old Windows installation, a game folder, or an unofficial DLL library. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, a matching Microsoft installation source, an official Windows repair reinstall, or System Restore.

If DISM and SFC cannot repair it
Escalate in this order:
- Review the DISM and SFC results and restart.
- Check the drive for broader filesystem problems.
- Use System Restore if the issue began after a recent installation or update and a suitable restore point exists.
- Use a matching Windows installation source with DISM.
- Use Windows 11’s Reinstall now repair option when available.
- Perform an in-place Windows repair using matching Microsoft installation media.
- Use Reset or a clean installation only as a last resort after backing up personal files.

FAQ
Is msobjs.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes, a correctly located and Microsoft-signed msobjs.dll is a Windows system file. Do not assume every file with that name is genuine.
Should it be in System32 or SysWOW64?
It can appear in System32 and, on 64-bit Windows, in SysWOW64. The correct copy depends on Windows architecture and servicing level.
Should I install Visual C++ to fix it?
No. msobjs.dll is not identified as a Visual C++ runtime file. Repair Windows first.
Can I register it with regsvr32?
Normally no. It is a Windows audit-message resource, not a DLL that should ordinarily be registered manually.
What if SFC says there are no integrity violations?
Check the affected application’s installation, path, permissions, and bundled files. Also verify that any msobjs.dll outside the Windows directories is Microsoft-signed.
What information should I collect before asking for help?
Record the exact error text, Windows version and build, whether the file exists in System32 or SysWOW64, the Digital Signatures result, and what changed immediately before the error appeared.
