mssph.dll is the Microsoft Search Protocol Handler, a genuine Windows Search component. If Windows says mssph.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL from an untrusted site.
What the mssph.dll error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because mssph.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because mssph.dll was not found.”
- “mssph.dll could not be loaded.”
- “Cannot find mssph.dll.”
- “The file mssph.dll is missing or corrupted.”
Windows Search uses protocol handlers to access and index supported data stores. The handler runs through Windows Search processes such as SearchProtocolHost.exe, which helps isolate indexing components from other processes. Microsoft update manifests list mssph.dll with related Search files including SearchIndexer.exe, SearchProtocolHost.exe, mssrch.dll, mssprxy.dll, and mssphtb.dll.
The error usually indicates Windows component corruption, an incomplete update, antivirus quarantine, disk damage, or a product-specific copy that was removed. It is not normally a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, game dependency, or device driver.
Identify the copy before repairing it
The path named in the error is important. On a typical 64-bit Windows installation, the system copies are usually:

C:WindowsSystem32mssph.dll— normally the 64-bit copyC:WindowsSysWOW64mssph.dll— commonly the 32-bit copy
On 32-bit Windows, the usual location is:
C:WindowsSystem32mssph.dll
Despite its name, System32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 commonly contains 32-bit system binaries.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may require the 32-bit copy. Copying a 64-bit DLL into an application folder will not correct an architecture mismatch.
Compact version-identification table
These are examples shown by Microsoft Windows servicing information, not interchangeable download choices.
| Windows context | Architecture | Example version information |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 version 1507 servicing | x86 | 7.0.10240.16384 |
| Windows 10 version 1507 servicing | x64 | 7.0.10240.16384 |
| Older Windows releases | x86 or x64 | Other 7.0.x builds |
The correct file depends on the Windows release, architecture, servicing level, and sometimes the Microsoft product involved. File size or version text alone cannot establish compatibility.

To inspect a file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the path shown above.
- Right-click
mssph.dlland select Properties. - Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A genuine system copy should be Microsoft-signed and located in a Windows component directory. A copy in a temporary folder, user profile, random application directory, or unfamiliar download location deserves investigation.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete servicing operation is a common reason for a protected Windows file to disappear or become damaged.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the application or Windows Search operation again.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart and test again.
If the error began immediately after an update, continue with the repair commands below. Do not manually replace the DLL with a file from another Windows computer.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft supports using Deployment Image Servicing and Management, followed by System File Checker, to repair the Windows component store and protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application or search function again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies clean system files. SFC then checks protected files and replaces missing or corrupted copies. DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source, so an internet connection and functioning update service can matter.
Typical SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: rerun DISM, inspect
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log, and consider a matching installation source or supported repair reinstall.
Repeating SFC without checking what changed can make troubleshooting unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies, while the repair function is provided by the full version. It is optional; Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands remain the supported first-line repair.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, use a matching Windows installation source with Microsoft’s documented /Source and /LimitAccess options. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build closely enough to provide the required components.
Fix 3: Check antivirus Protection History
Security software may quarantine or remove a file after a detection or false positive.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to
mssph.dll. - Expand the entry and record the detected path, detection name, publisher, and action.
- If the file is in a Windows system directory, has a valid Microsoft signature, and the detection is demonstrably a false positive, use the available restore or allow action.
- If the file is unsigned, oddly located, or associated with suspicious activity, do not allow it.
- Run a Full scan. If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan where available.
- After cleaning or restoring a verified file, run DISM and SFC again.
Do not whitelist a file solely because its name is mssph.dll. Malware can use a legitimate filename.

Fix 4: Determine whether SharePoint owns the file
Windows Search is the normal owner of the system copy, but Microsoft also ships an mssph.dll in SharePoint Server packages. A SharePoint Server copy can have different version numbering from the Windows copy.
If the error identifies a SharePoint, Office server, or other product directory:
- Note the complete path in the error.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings → Apps → Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Locate the named Microsoft product.
- Select its available Modify, Repair, or maintenance option.
- If no repair option exists, download the installer or current servicing package through the organization’s official Microsoft administration channel.
- Restart the server or workstation if the product installer requests it.
- Do not replace the product’s copy with the Windows copy from
System32orSysWOW64.
A product-specific path changes the repair route. Repair the owning product rather than treating every same-named DLL as interchangeable.

A missing DLL and a damaged search index are different problems.
If Windows Search opens but returns missing, stale, or incomplete results:
- Open Settings.
- Search for Troubleshoot.
- Open Troubleshoot settings.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter if it is available.
- Follow the prompts and select the symptom that best matches the problem.
To rebuild the index:
- Open Control Panel.
- Set View by to Small icons or Large icons.
- Select Indexing Options.
- Select Advanced.
- On the Index Settings tab, select Rebuild.
- Confirm the action and allow indexing to finish.
Rebuilding the index repairs the search catalogue. It does not restore a missing mssph.dll.
If the problem affects only one user profile, test a new Windows account. A profile-specific Search package or cache issue may require Microsoft’s Search reset or package re-registration procedure rather than DLL replacement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 6: Use System Restore or a supported repair reinstall
If the problem started directly after a Windows update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or software change, System Restore may help when a restore point exists.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files.
On supported Windows 11 systems, you can also use the repair reinstall option:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available.

If corruption returns, SFC cannot repair the file, or the file repeatedly disappears, back up important data and investigate disk health. Recurring corruption can indicate a failing storage device or broader file-system damage.

Do not download or manually register mssph.dll
Do not download mssph.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. That approach can introduce malware, provide the wrong architecture, mismatch the Windows build, or leave the underlying component-store problem unresolved.
Do not run this as a general repair:
regsvr32 mssph.dll
regsvr32 registers DLLs that support the required COM self-registration functions. It is not a missing-file repair command, and it is not a first-line fix for a Windows-protected Search component.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Microsoft’s repair reinstall, System Restore, or the official installer for the product named in the error.

There is no verified basis for treating mssph.dll as a graphics driver, device driver, DirectX file, Visual C++ runtime, or .NET component. Reinstalling those packages is appropriate only when the diagnostic identifies a separate missing dependency.
If a separate Device Manager error points to a driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If the problem began after an update, open Properties → Driver and review Roll Back Driver.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Manually hunting versions for many devices can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation through the full version is optional. It is not a substitute for repairing Windows Search or reinstalling a product that owns a separate mssph.dll.
FAQ
Is mssph.dll malware?
Not when it is a valid Microsoft-signed file in a normal Windows component directory. An unsigned copy or one in a temporary, user, or unexpected application folder should be scanned and investigated.
Is mssph.dll part of Windows?
Yes, Windows Search installations use it as the Microsoft Search Protocol Handler. SharePoint Server can also contain a separate product-specific file with the same name.
Does a 32-bit program need a different file?
Possibly. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit and 64-bit copies commonly reside in SysWOW64 and System32, respectively. The process architecture and Windows build must match the loaded component.
Will rebuilding the search index replace the DLL?
No. Index rebuilding addresses search results and the catalogue. It does not restore a missing or corrupt binary.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for mssph.dll alone. Install or repair those packages only if the error identifies one of them as a missing dependency.

That wording can mean a dependency required by mssph.dll is missing, not necessarily that mssph.dll itself is absent. Use the file path, event history, signature, and DISM/SFC results to identify the actual failure.
What if none of these fixes works?
Check %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log, confirm the file path and signature, inspect antivirus history, and use a matching Windows repair source or supported repair reinstall. If the dialog names SharePoint or another product, repair that product instead of copying a Windows DLL.
