MultiVersus relaunched on May 28, 2024. Its new player-versus-environment mode was called Rifts, a series of themed battles and challenges playable solo or in online co-op. The announcement is historical: Warner Bros. Games later said online features would end on May 30, 2025.
When did MultiVersus relaunch?
Warner Bros. Games announced May 28, 2024, as the full launch date. The developer published its detailed preview of Rifts on May 16, so that preview date should not be confused with the game’s relaunch date. The May 16 Steam Community post covered the mode and launch timing.
What was Rifts?
Rifts was a PvE mode built around themed sequences of encounters, rather than competitive matches against other players. Players could progress through a Rift alone or team up online; the developer said co-op teammates shared rewards. Difficulty increased as players advanced, with combat mutators changing the conditions of encounters.
Encounters, mini-games, and bosses
The first season was set to include a tutorial Rift and seasonal Rifts with their own stages, characters, skins, and mutators. The developer overview described more than a dozen mini-games in the first season, plus a themed boss battle at the end of each Rift.

Optional mission objectives offered another way to earn stars. Collecting more stars unlocked additional rewards, giving players reasons to revisit encounters and complete objectives beyond simply reaching the end.
Gems and progression
Each player had three gem sockets. Gems came in Offense, Defense, and Utility types, providing bonuses intended to help with harder nodes; duplicate gems could be leveled up. Rifts also offered a way to develop combat skills outside competitive PvP.

What other modes were available at launch?
The launch announcement described Rifts as one part of a broader mode lineup. Alongside PvE, the game offered 2v2 team play, 1v1, four-player free-for-all, co-op against AI, custom online matches, training, tutorials, and local matches for up to four players. Warner Bros. Games listed these modes in its French-language launch release.

No. In a January 31, 2025 announcement, Warner Bros. Games said Season 5 would be the game’s final seasonal content update. It began February 4 and concluded May 30, 2025, when online features ended; the publisher also said the game would no longer be available to play online or download after that date.

For offline play after the shutdown, the publisher’s notice instructed players to download the latest version and log in during Season 5. That was the stated requirement in the notice; it does not establish the current access status of a particular platform account or installation. The announcement is available on the official MultiVersus Steam page.
