First check where your encoder is sending the stream. A Muvi Stream URL and Stream Key send video to Muvi Live; a YouTube event’s server URL and stream key send it to YouTube. They are separate credentials, and Muvi’s documented RTMP workflow does not establish that starting a Muvi Live stream automatically publishes it on a YouTube channel. Follow the path for the actual destination before changing bitrate or buying equipment.
Identify the stream’s destination
Open your encoder’s stream settings and note the selected service, server URL, and which platform supplied the key. Never share a stream key publicly: YouTube describes it as the stream’s password and address.
- Encoder sends to Muvi: Check the Muvi stream’s Stream Info and follow the Muvi sequence below.
- Encoder sends to YouTube: Open the matching event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and follow the YouTube sequence below.
- Muvi uses an external live feed: Confirm that the configured HLS, RTSP, MPD, or SRT URL points to an active live feed. Muvi says its HLS Live indicator appears for an active real-time feed, not a playlist, recording, or VOD feed. See Muvi’s external live-stream URL guidance.
The key distinction is where the encoder sends its output. A preview in one platform does not confirm that another platform has received or published the stream.
If your encoder sends to Muvi Live
- In Muvi Content Management, open Content Library and select the intended live stream.
- Under Stream Info, copy that stream’s Muvi Stream URL and Stream Key into your encoder’s custom-service settings. Do not substitute a YouTube event’s URL or key.
- In the encoder, confirm the intended video and audio sources, select a suitable server location, and save the settings.
- In Muvi Content Library, click Start for the stream and wait for the server to start.
- Then start streaming from the encoder. Return to Muvi and check its preview and Live indicator.
Muvi documents its sharable link, HLS URL, and embed code as distribution options. These are not the same as configuring an encoder to send directly to YouTube. If the problem is an embedded Muvi player rather than the YouTube watch page, check whether embed-domain restrictions are enabled and whether the target domain is allowed. See Muvi’s embed guidance.

If your encoder sends directly to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open the correct event in Live Control Room.
- Confirm that the encoder’s server URL and stream key came from that event. A key from another event or platform will not be interchangeable.
- Start sending from the encoder and wait for the event preview. For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s workflow says to click Go live after the preview appears.
- Check the event’s privacy setting: public, private, or unlisted. Verify playback on the channel or event watch page, and check from a mobile device if viewers report that it is missing.
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. These are YouTube requirements and guidance, not Muvi settings. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
If you suspect the key is stale or exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; replace the key in the encoder and keep it private. See YouTube’s encoder stream settings.

Use the status message to locate the fault
Once the destination and credentials are confirmed, use that platform’s status and preview to decide what to inspect next. YouTube’s Live Control Room shows stream health and error messages; note the exact message, event type, encoder, and time if you contact support. YouTube advises monitoring stream health during the event. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
- Encoder reports a start error: YouTube’s troubleshooting guide recommends refreshing the stream key for third-party encoder start errors. Confirm that the replacement key is entered in the right event’s settings.
- Preview has the wrong image or no sound: Check which sources are routed into the encoder, encoder error messages, and CPU load. If you are also recording locally, check whether the recording shows the same problem.
- Encoder preview looks healthy but viewers have playback problems: Check the outbound upload connection’s speed and stability, not only download speed. Ask viewers on different networks whether they see the same issue.
- Preview works but people cannot find the stream: Check whether the event is scheduled, whether you clicked Go live when required, its privacy setting, and the channel or watch-page URL you shared.
- Muvi preview works but a YouTube event does not: Confirm that a separate YouTube publishing or relay workflow is actually configured. The documented Muvi RTMP steps alone do not establish automatic YouTube publication.
Check encoding and upload bandwidth after the destination is right
For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate range in YouTube’s current settings table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate fits all streams. YouTube also advises leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. These are YouTube recommendations, accessed in 2026; they are not Muvi requirements. Test with representative motion and audio before an event, then watch stream health while live. A high download speed does not prove that outbound upload is stable. Avoid applying Muvi’s illustrative quality-tuning bitrates as though they were YouTube’s ingest requirements.

Common misdiagnoses
- Buying a capture card, microphone, or lighting to fix a missing YouTube event: Those help only when the source setup calls for them; they do not correct a wrong destination, key, privacy setting, or publication state.
- Assuming a Muvi share link or embed code makes a YouTube event: Those distribute a Muvi stream. Check the separate YouTube event workflow if YouTube is the intended destination.
- Assuming an empty analytics panel means the stream is healthy: Use the actual stream status, error text, and preview instead.
- Changing bitrate before checking the key and destination: Encoding adjustments cannot fix sending to the wrong platform or an unpublished/private event.
