If mv_wx.dll is missing, incompatible, or could not be loaded, repair the FSX, FSX: Steam Edition, or Prepar3D aircraft or WX Advantage Weather Radar package that installed it. mv_wx.dll is not a Windows component, so downloading it into System32 or running system repair tools first usually misses the real problem.
What this file actually does
mv_wx.dll is a compiled flight-simulator gauge associated with the MilViz/REX WX Advantage Weather Radar. Aircraft panels load it to provide weather-radar functions inside Microsoft Flight Simulator X, FSX: Steam Edition, or Prepar3D.
It is not:
- A Microsoft Windows DLL
- A Visual C++ runtime file
- A DirectX component
- A .NET component
- A normal hardware driver
- A file that normally belongs in
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64
The file may have been installed by the WX Advantage Radar itself, by a MilViz aircraft package that integrated the radar, or by another aircraft package using the same gauge. The exact owner depends on the aircraft and simulator installation.
A shared installation may place it here:
<Prepar3D folder>gaugesMV_WX.dll
An aircraft-specific installation may instead use:
<aircraft folder>panelMV_WX.dll
The related MV_WXM.dll is a different file. It is commonly associated with the simulator’s module area:

<Prepar3D folder>ModulesMV_WXM.dll
Do not substitute MV_WXM.dll for MV_WX.dll. A file can exist in the expected folder and still fail if it was built for a different simulator version.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
mv_wx.dll was not found |
Incomplete aircraft or radar installation | Repair or reinstall the owning package |
mv_wx.dll is incompatible |
Wrong FSX or Prepar3D build | Run the installer for the exact simulator version |
| The aircraft loads with a blank radar | Missing gauge, incorrect panel reference, or integration problem | Inspect panel.cfg and repair the aircraft |
| Prepar3D crashes after loading an aircraft | Duplicate or obsolete gauge copy | Find and temporarily rename duplicate copies |
| The file is locked | Simulator or add-on conflict | Close the simulator and test one aircraft at a time |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Security software removed or isolated it | Verify the installer source, then inspect Protection history |
| Several unrelated Windows DLLs also fail | Possible Windows component corruption | Use DISM and SFC after repairing the simulator package |
Fix 1: Repair the WX radar or aircraft package
This is the most likely fix for a genuinely missing mv_wx.dll.
Step 1: Identify the affected simulator
Write down whether the aircraft runs in:
- FSX
- FSX: Steam Edition
- Prepar3D
For Prepar3D, also record the installed generation shown by the simulator’s About window. Do not assume that a file working in one Prepar3D installation will work in another.
Step 2: Identify the aircraft or radar owner
Think about when the error began:
- After installing a particular aircraft
- After updating Prepar3D
- After reinstalling the WX Advantage Radar
- After moving the simulator to another drive
- After an antivirus scan
- After restoring or copying an aircraft folder
If only one aircraft reports the problem, start with that aircraft’s installer. If several aircraft using the radar fail, start with the WX Advantage Radar package or its update utility.
Step 3: Run the original installer
- Close FSX, FSX: Steam Edition, and Prepar3D.
- Locate the original aircraft or radar installer.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair, Update, or Install, depending on the options shown.
- Select the exact simulator version when the installer asks.
- Allow it to restore the gauge and any associated module.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Test one affected aircraft.
A successful repair should remove the missing-gauge message and allow the radar or aircraft panel to load. If the installer does not list your simulator version, do not force an older build into the new installation. Contact the product owner or use the original purchase account and support channel for a compatible installer.
If the installer cannot find the simulator
Check the simulator’s actual installation folder rather than selecting a similarly named directory. A moved or duplicated simulator can leave the installer pointing at an old location.
Do not solve this by copying mv_wx.dll from another computer. The copied file may target another simulator build, depend on files that are absent, or create competing copies.

Fix 2: Check the gauge and module folders
A wrong folder or duplicate copy can produce the same error as a missing file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Search for both files
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- In the search box, search for:
MV_WX.dll
- Repeat the search for:
MV_WXM.dll
Record every location you find. Common relevant locations include the simulator’s gauges folder, the aircraft’s panel folder, and the Prepar3D Modules folder.
The file’s presence is not proof that it is the correct file. Right-click it, select Properties, and open the Details tab. Record the product and file-version information for comparison with the installer or aircraft documentation. Historical community reports mention multiple builds, but those reports are not current universal version requirements.
Check for duplicates safely
If you find multiple copies:
- Close the simulator.
- Create a backup folder outside the simulator directory.
- Copy the discovered files into that backup folder.
- Do not delete anything yet.
- Temporarily rename an obviously old or separately copied file, for example:
MV_WX.dll.old
- Start the simulator and test the affected aircraft.
- If the problem worsens, restore the original filename.
Do not rename files while FSX or Prepar3D is running. An aircraft-specific copy and a global gauge copy may be intentional, so remove or disable duplicates only as a controlled test.
Fix 3: Inspect the aircraft’s panel.cfg
An aircraft panel can explicitly request the gauge even when the file is stored elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the affected aircraft’s folder.
- Open its
panelfolder. - Right-click
panel.cfg. - Select Open with and choose Notepad.
- Press Ctrl + F.
- Search for:
MV_WX.
You may see references resembling:
gauge00=MV_WX.WX
or:
gauge01=MV_WX.WX2D
These references require a discoverable MV_WX.dll. If the panel configuration refers to the gauge but the file is absent, repair the aircraft or radar installation rather than editing the configuration randomly.
If the aircraft has recently been modified, restore the original panel.cfg from the vendor’s installer or backup. As a temporary diagnostic test, you can disable the radar gauge lines by placing a semicolon at the start of the relevant line, but this may remove radar functionality and should not be treated as the permanent repair.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may quarantine a file that was previously installed correctly. Do not assume that every detection is a false positive.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
MV_WX.dllor the aircraft/radar installer. - Open the entry and review its details.
- Restore the file only if you have verified that it came from the legitimate original installer.
- Update Windows Security.
- Run a scan on the installer before running it again.
Microsoft explains Protection history and quarantine actions in its Windows Security Protection history documentation.
If the file is quarantined again, do not create a broad antivirus exclusion for the entire simulator folder. Re-download or retrieve the installer through the original product channel and ask the product owner to verify the package.
Fix 5: Match the simulator-specific build
An “incompatible with this simulator” message usually indicates that the gauge was built for another simulator target. Windows being 64-bit does not prove that the gauge is compatible with your simulator.
Use this process:
- Close the simulator.
- Open the file’s Properties and then Details.
- Note the file information without treating historical version numbers as current requirements.
- Open the radar or aircraft installer.
- Select the precise FSX, FSX: Steam Edition, or Prepar3D option.
- If several Prepar3D versions are listed, select the installed one.
- Install the matching build.
- Test the aircraft again.
Do not mix files between FSX and Prepar3D simply because the filename is identical. Do not assume that a Prepar3D v3 or v4 file belongs in a Prepar3D v5 installation.
If no installer supports your simulator version, the safe choices are to use a supported simulator installation, disable the radar integration, or contact the product owner. There is no verified universal standalone download that should be used as a replacement.

- Test another aircraft that does not use the WX Advantage Radar.
- Test another aircraft known to use the radar.
- If only one aircraft fails, repair that aircraft first.
- If every radar-equipped aircraft fails, repair the shared radar installation.
- If the simulator crashes only with one aircraft, temporarily disable that aircraft’s radar gauge in
panel.cfg. - Restart the simulator and test again.
If disabling the gauge stops the crash, the result points to an incompatible or damaged radar integration. It does not prove that Windows is missing a system component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Use DISM and SFC only for Windows symptoms
mv_wx.dll is not a Windows system file, so SFC cannot recreate it. These commands are appropriate when Windows itself shows additional corruption, such as multiple built-in applications failing or other protected system files reporting errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair the aircraft or radar package again.
- Test the simulator.
Microsoft documents this sequence in its System File Checker instructions.

Repeating SFC will not install a third-party simulator gauge. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through Windows repair results and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed; its free scan identifies reported issues, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the aircraft or radar package remains the definitive fix for mv_wx.dll.
Does regsvr32 fix mv_wx.dll?
Normally, no.
regsvr32 is intended for registering Windows components that provide the appropriate registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer. A simulator gauge is loaded by the simulator’s gauge and panel system, not registered as a normal COM component.
Running this command is therefore unlikely to repair the gauge:
regsvr32 MV_WX.dll
It may produce an entry-point, architecture, or loading error. Microsoft describes the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do not keep trying different copies of regsvr32 from System32 and SysWOW64. Repair the simulator package instead.

Do drivers or runtimes need reinstalling?
Not by default. Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, and graphics drivers should be considered only if the simulator log identifies a dependent runtime or the original product installer explicitly requires it.
If a simulator log identifies a separate hardware driver failure:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver or reinstall the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official source.
- Restart Windows and test the simulator.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying which of many drivers is stale; its free scan shows reported driver issues, while installation is completed by the full version. A driver update will not replace a missing mv_wx.dll when the aircraft package is the actual owner.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not download mv_wx.dll from a DLL website
A random replacement can contain malware, target the wrong simulator, use the wrong architecture, or hide the actual incomplete installation. It can also create duplicate copies that make troubleshooting harder.
Use only:
- The original WX Advantage Radar installer or updater
- The original aircraft installer
- The product owner’s purchase account or support channel
- Your own verified backup from the same simulator installation
There is no verified current standalone download that should be treated as the universal fix.
FAQ
Is mv_wx.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a third-party flight-simulator gauge associated with the MilViz/REX WX Advantage Weather Radar.
Can I put it in System32?
No. The normal locations are the simulator’s gauges folder or an aircraft’s panel folder, depending on how the product was installed.
Is MV_WXM.dll the same file?
No. MV_WXM.dll is a separate compatibility or module file. It cannot replace MV_WX.dll.
Why does the file exist but still fail?
It may be the wrong simulator-specific build, an obsolete duplicate, a quarantined or damaged copy, or a file that the aircraft cannot discover through its panel configuration.
Will reinstalling FSX or Prepar3D fix it?
Usually not as a first step. Repair the aircraft or radar package first. Reinstalling the simulator can leave third-party add-ons incomplete and creates unnecessary configuration work.
Should I use System Restore?
Only after backing up your simulator configuration and installed add-ons. Microsoft provides System Restore through Windows recovery tools, including rstrui.exe, but restoring Windows does not guarantee that a third-party gauge will be restored correctly.
