My Summer Car is a Windows-only car-building and life-survival simulator set during a 1990s Finnish summer. You assemble a car and engine from hundreds of loose parts, maintain your character, drive several vehicles, take jobs and rally, and manage the risk of permanent death. It left Steam Early Access with its full release on January 8, 2025.
What you actually do in My Summer Car
The central project is building your car. Steam describes a full assembly involving more than a hundred parts, beginning with components scattered loose rather than a ready-to-drive vehicle. Assembly, adjustment, maintenance and repairs are the main progression loop.
Drive, tune and keep the car alive
Driving uses a detailed simulation rather than simplified arcade handling. The official feature description includes an engine simulation, Pacejka tire model, fluid management, damage and wear, traffic controlled by AI, paved and dirt roads, rally events and multiple drivable vehicles. Your choices about tuning, fluids and repairs affect whether the car remains usable.
Survive the summer between garage jobs
The player character has needs and obligations alongside the vehicle work. You must manage food, sleep, money and alcohol, take randomly paying jobs, use the sauna and keep up personal maintenance. The game can end permanently, so a crash or other fatal mistake is not simply a reload-free inconvenience.

How demanding is the tone?
This is an intentionally unforgiving, mature simulation. Steam’s content warning includes crash deaths and blood, a possible suicide scene, tobacco and alcohol, and Finnish profanity; English subtitles are optional. That combination, plus permanent death and detailed mechanical work, makes it a poor fit if you want a relaxed driving game with forgiving checkpoints.
Can your Windows PC run it?
Steam lists these specifications and notes that high single-core CPU performance is required.

The Windows versions above are the game’s listed requirements, not a promise that every old installation will work indefinitely. Steam Client support has required Windows 10 or later since January 1, 2024, so a Windows 7 or 8 machine may face a client-compatibility issue even though those systems remain in the game’s requirement block.
What the requirements mean in practice
- Prioritize CPU single-core performance. The developer’s warning is unusually explicit; a nominally adequate graphics card does not compensate for a weak processor core.
- 6 GB RAM is the floor. 8 GB is the listed recommendation and leaves more room for Windows and background applications.
- Storage is easy; compatibility is not. The listed installation footprint is only 1 GB, but the CPU, 64-bit system and Steam-client conditions matter more for a purchase decision.
Does My Summer Car support a steering wheel and shifter?
Yes. The Steam listing explicitly supports steering-wheel and shifter controllers, and the official feature list says that operating the car requires an H-type shifter and clutch. A PC racing wheel with pedals and an H-pattern shifter is therefore the most faithful accessory setup, although it is optional rather than a purchase requirement.

What the hardware changes
- A wheel and pedals provide the intended steering, throttle, brake and clutch input.
- An H-pattern shifter matches the game’s manual-transmission requirement more closely than a sequential paddle setup.
- No particular wheel brand or model is officially endorsed in the cited game descriptions, so compatibility should be checked for your Windows and game configuration before buying.
Is My Summer Car still in Early Access?
No. Steam records October 24, 2016 as the Early Access release and January 8, 2025 as the full release. Amistech Games’ December 31, 2024 news entry announced that the game was moving out of Steam Early Access.
Recent documented build information
The official changelog identifies build v.241231-01, dated December 31, 2024. Its fixes include safer police checkpoints, rally-start penalties, traffic-light behavior, vehicle-collision changes and other bug fixes. That build date describes the documented update entry; it is not a guarantee that every later Steam installation has identical files.

Choose it if you want
- Hands-on, loose-part car and engine assembly instead of menu-based upgrades.
- Manual driving with clutch and H-pattern shifting.
- A Finnish rural road network with traffic, dirt driving, jobs and rally competition.
- A survival routine where money, fatigue, food and personal upkeep influence your plans.
- High consequences, including permanent death.
Look elsewhere if you want
- Instantly drivable cars or lightweight customization.
- Arcade handling, forgiving failures or frequent safety nets.
- A family-friendly presentation without alcohol, tobacco, profanity or disturbing scenes.
- A console version: the official site labels the game PC-only.
How it differs from simpler driving games
My Summer Car’s defining difference is that driving is only one part of ownership. A conventional driving game may let you select a finished car and customize it through menus; here, the loose-part assembly, fluids, wear, clutch work and repairs are the game. Survival pressures and permanent death add consequences that a standalone road simulator usually does not have. If you compare alternatives, judge them on assembly depth, simulation intensity, survival pressure, driving variety and accessibility rather than graphics alone.
