MyHouse.wad’s enduring appeal is its transformation of a familiar Doom II house into a shifting horror experience. To play the version described in PC Gamer’s March 2023 guide, you need a PC retail copy of Doom II with Doom2.WAD, GZDoom, and the playable MyHouse.pk3 file. The extension matters: the guide says to launch the .pk3, not the original .wad.
What you need to play MyHouse
PC Gamer’s setup guide, published March 20, 2023, lists three components. These are the guide’s instructions from 2023, not confirmation of current compatibility or download availability.
- Doom2.WAD: The game data file from a PC retail copy of Doom II. If you already own a compatible copy, the guide does not suggest buying it again.
- GZDoom: A recent build of the Doom source port.
- MyHouse.pk3: The playable mod file, which the guide says is in the Files folder of Steve “Veddge” Nelson’s Google Drive.
Keep the files together, then drag MyHouse.pk3 onto GZDoom.exe. Do not launch MyHouse.wad instead; the guide distinguishes that original file from the .pk3 used to play the mod. It also recommends OpenGL or Vulkan rendering rather than Software mode, saying some effects may break in Software mode. Why the mod is more than a house map
Steve “Veddge” Nelson shared MyHouse on Doomworld in March 2023. PC Gamer describes it as an expanded take on an older “my own house but full of demons” map attributed to a friend. Rather than remaining a conventional level, the playable experience turns the house into a place of spatial contradictions: rooms change, routes hide, and apparent endings may not be final.

That shift from an ordinary, recognizable setting into something unstable is central to the mod’s horror. Dominic Tarason’s 2023 feature calls its effect a “chillingly good impression” of seeming haunted and never-ending; that is a reviewer’s impression, not a literal claim about the software. The details of how its secrets and endings unfold are best left undiscovered by players who want the full surprise.
Should you know the story details first?
No. PC Gamer’s feature recommends going in blind and keeping to the initial Doomworld post before playing. If you want to preserve discovery, stop here rather than reading descriptions of later locations or routes. The same feature names a burning house, a brutalist hellscape, an airport, a maze-like Backrooms sequence, and a return to Doom II’s Underhalls; those examples show the range of the experience, but knowing them in advance can spoil the escalation.

Is House of Leaves required?
No. “Navidson Realty” alludes to Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves, whose fictional Navidson estate is labyrinthine and otherworldly. The novel is optional context for readers interested in the reference; it is not a requirement for installing or playing MyHouse.
