Kyle Larson turned a 26-second pit stop and an early trip a lap down into a second-place finish in the South Point 400 on October 4, 2026. Chase Briscoe won at Las Vegas Motor Speedway; Larson’s runner-up result widened his lead over Denny Hamlin in the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Chase from 26 points before the race to 40 afterward.

Briscoe controlled the race; Larson had to recover

Briscoe, driving the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, led 175 of 267 laps and won both stages. He took the checkered flag 1.376 seconds ahead of Larson, with Tyler Reddick third, according to NASCAR’s October 4 race recap. The result came from two very different race days: Briscoe’s sustained control and Larson’s climb back from an early setback.

Larson started sixth in the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and struggled with handling. He stopped on Lap 33 for work around the right-front wheel area; Autoweek reported the stop lasted 26 seconds and left him a lap down. A timely caution let him take a wave-around and return to the lead lap, limiting the damage.

How Larson worked his way back to second

Larson was 23rd at the end of Stage 1 and 10th at the end of Stage 2. With 30 laps remaining, he had advanced to third. He passed Bubba Wallace with 11 laps to go and was 0.346 seconds behind Briscoe with ten laps remaining, according to Autoweek’s race chronology.

The recovery did not mean Larson had the stronger car throughout the race. He said track position mattered, and his tires were worn by the time he reached Briscoe. Autoweek reported that Larson gained 14 points on Hamlin at Las Vegas; Hendrick Motorsports said his 2.2 average finish across the first five Chase races was the best opening five races of a postseason in NASCAR history. Those figures describe the standings and results as of this October 2026 race.

The last-lap contact left Larson second

Larson closed on Briscoe, but the gap at the finish was larger than the late chase suggested. NASCAR reported that Larson and Reddick had drawn to under four-tenths of a second of Briscoe with one lap remaining. Larson tried the high line through Turns 3 and 4 to carry momentum, got loose, overcorrected, and hit the outside wall. Reddick then made contact with Larson and slid across the infield grass. Both recovered to keep their positions: Larson second and Reddick third.

“It was a fight,” Larson said after the race, in NASCAR’s account. He described the closing laps this way: “Just tried to stay patient, but my tires were pretty much burnt off by the time I got there [to Briscoe]. Just tried to do what I could to try to win. Felt like I moved up at the right time and did a decent job with it; just was trying to push hard in [Turns] 3 and 4 to build some momentum out, and I don’t know, and just got really loose and overcorrected in the wall.”

Briscoe, reflecting on the closing battle, said: “Honestly, more of the windshield, except for when Larson would get really, really close,” according to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway recap.

What the Las Vegas result meant for the Chase

In the post-race standings snapshot dated October 4, 2026, Larson held a 40-point lead over Hamlin, up from 26 points entering Las Vegas. Five Chase races remained. The race gave Larson more separation, but the standings at this point do not settle the championship.
