ncc.dll is the NCC PlugIn for IrfanView, associated with IrfanView and developed by Irfan Skiljan. It is not a normal Windows component, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall IrfanView together with its matching official Plugins package.
Do not download ncc.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. That can install the wrong architecture, introduce malware, or leave the damaged IrfanView installation unfixed.
Fix 1: Reinstall IrfanView and its official Plugins package
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely solution when ncc.dll was deleted, quarantined, corrupted, or omitted during installation.
- Close IrfanView.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps and then Apps & features.
- Search for IrfanView.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Uninstall. Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Open a browser and go directly to the official IrfanView website by entering
irfanview.com. - Download the IrfanView installer that matches the edition you use.
- Download the matching package from the official Plugins page at
irfanview.com/plugins.htm. - Install IrfanView first.
- Install the Plugins package into the same IrfanView installation.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch IrfanView and repeat the action that previously produced the error.
The plugin package may contain different files depending on the release and architecture. Confirm its current contents on the official Plugins page rather than assuming every release includes the same DLL.

If you do not want to uninstall first
You can install IrfanView and its Plugins package over the existing installation. This may restore missing files while preserving settings, but a complete uninstall and reinstall is preferable when the installation is visibly damaged or multiple versions are present.
If reinstalling works, the error should disappear when IrfanView starts or when you use the plugin-dependent operation. If the error remains, continue with the architecture and duplicate-installation checks below.
Fix 2: Match the IrfanView and plugin architectures
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A 32-bit plugin cannot reliably repair a 64-bit IrfanView installation, and a 64-bit plugin cannot be used by a 32-bit installation. Do not copy plugin files between installations to solve this mismatch.
To identify the installed edition:
- Start IrfanView if it opens.
- Open the Help menu.
- Select About IrfanView.
- Check the version and architecture information shown there.
- Close the dialog and IrfanView.
- Return to the official IrfanView download and Plugins pages.
- Download the package intended for that same architecture.
- Reinstall both the application and the matching Plugins package.
If IrfanView will not open:
- Press Windows + E.
- Browse to the shortcut’s target location. You can right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and inspect the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the IrfanView executable.
- Check whether you have more than one IrfanView installation.
- Remove or repair the unused installation if appropriate.
- Reinstall the Plugins package into the directory used by the executable you actually launch.
A common failure occurs when a desktop shortcut, file association, or image editor launcher still points to an older IrfanView directory. Repairing a different installation will not change the files used by that shortcut.
The correct location for an application plugin is normally the IrfanView program or plugin directory. It is not automatically C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may remove or quarantine a plugin after an update, scan, or false positive. The missing-file message alone does not prove that ncc.dll is safe or malicious.

Windows Security
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events involving IrfanView, its Plugins package, or
ncc.dll. - Expand an event to see its location and detection details.
If the file was quarantined:
- Verify that the affected file was inside the genuine IrfanView installation.
- Scan the installer again before restoring anything.
- Check the installer’s digital signature where available.
- Restore the file only if you are confident it came from the official IrfanView package and your security software identifies it as a false positive.
- If the detection remains suspicious, do not restore the quarantined file.
- Download a fresh installer directly from
irfanview.comand scan it before installation.
Do not add a broad exclusion for your entire Downloads folder or Windows directory. If the file disappears again after reinstalling, review the quarantine history and contact the security software vendor if the official package is repeatedly detected.
Fix 4: Confirm that IrfanView is allowed to access its plugin directory
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A file can exist but still fail to load if the program is using a different directory or cannot read the installation files.

- Right-click the IrfanView shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
- Confirm that this is the directory where you installed the application and Plugins package.
- Right-click the IrfanView executable.
- Select Properties, open the Security tab, and confirm that your Windows account has permission to read and execute files in that folder.
- Start IrfanView normally.
You can also test whether permissions are involved by right-clicking the IrfanView shortcut and selecting Run as administrator once. If the error disappears only when elevated, the installation or its folder permissions need correction. Running as administrator is a diagnostic step, not the preferred permanent solution.
Avoid installing IrfanView inside a location managed by cleanup software or restrictive corporate policies unless required. If a cleanup utility removes plugin files, reinstalling will not solve the problem until that utility is configured correctly.
Fix 5: Repair broader Windows component corruption
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally install or replace a third-party IrfanView plugin such as ncc.dll. Use them when other Windows features are also failing, applications are showing unrelated system-file errors, or Windows itself appears corrupted.
First run DISM:
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows.
Then run System File Checker:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test IrfanView again.

If you are repeatedly hunting through Windows repairs, comparing logs, and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it found; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling IrfanView remains the definitive fix for this application plugin.
If DISM and SFC report repairs but ncc.dll is still missing, that result is expected for a third-party file. Return to the official IrfanView installer and Plugins package instead of repeating the Windows commands.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers only when symptoms point to them
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A graphics or storage driver is not the normal cause of an IrfanView plugin DLL being absent. Driver work is relevant only when IrfanView crashes during image rendering, Windows reports broader display problems, or Device Manager shows a device error.
To check Device Manager:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Storage controllers, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read the device status.
- Open the Driver tab to view the provider and installed driver details.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test IrfanView again.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise, obtain the driver from the computer or device manufacturer.

Fix 7: Check for a damaged disk, profile, or cleanup process
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
If ncc.dll returns after every reinstall, something may be removing or corrupting files.
Check these possibilities:
- Review antivirus history again.
- Temporarily stop scheduled cleanup utilities that remove unused application files.
- Check whether Windows reports storage errors or low disk space.
- Open IrfanView from a separate Windows user account.
- If it works there, the original user profile or its permissions may be damaged.
- Create a fresh profile only after backing up important user data.
- Reinstall IrfanView from the trusted official installer under the affected account.
System Restore can help when the failure clearly began after a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists:
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and complete the wizard.
System Restore is a fallback. It does not replace obtaining the correct current IrfanView package.

If you suspect malware, update Windows Security or your installed security product and run a full scan. Do not restore a quarantined DLL merely because its filename matches the error.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM or ActiveX registration entry points. An IrfanView plugin is normally loaded by IrfanView from its application directory, not registered globally with Windows.
Running this command is therefore usually inappropriate:
regsvr32 ncc.dll
It can produce a registration error while leaving the real problem untouched. Use the official IrfanView and Plugins installers instead. Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64 and do not register it globally unless IrfanView’s own documentation specifically requires that behavior.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as the first fix
The supplied identification describes ncc.dll as an IrfanView plugin, not as a Microsoft runtime file. Installing Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a logical first response to this particular filename.
Install or repair a runtime only when a separate error explicitly names that runtime or another dependency. Microsoft maintains a Visual C++ Redistributable reference for cases where that dependency is actually identified.
