“The program can’t start because ncdprop.dll is missing from your computer.”
“The code execution cannot proceed because ncdprop.dll was not found.”
You may also see “Error loading ncdprop.dll. The specified module could not be found,” “NcdProp.dll is corrupted,” or “NcdProp.dll could not be loaded.”
The 60-second answer
ncdprop.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component for advanced network-device and network-adapter properties. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or ordinary third-party application DLL.

Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. The safest repair is:
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM, then System File Checker:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and repeat the action that produced the error.
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
%windir%System32NcdProp.dll
%windir%SysWOW64NcdProp.dll
System32 contains the 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains redirected 32-bit system components, despite its confusing name.
Microsoft describes this component as part of the network adapter’s advanced-properties experience. If the error appears while opening an adapter’s properties, the network driver may also need attention, but the driver is not the same thing as ncdprop.dll.
What usually causes the error
The message does not always prove that ncdprop.dll itself is missing. Windows may display “the specified module could not be found” when the named DLL is present but one of its dependencies cannot load.
The most likely causes are:
- Corrupted or missing Windows system files
- An incomplete Windows update or servicing operation
- Damage to the Windows component store
- A damaged or recently updated network-adapter driver
- Antivirus quarantine or malware remediation
- Disk errors or broader Windows installation damage
- A 32-bit and 64-bit architecture mismatch
- An application reporting a dependency failure incorrectly
There is no reliable reason to identify this file as belonging to a particular game or consumer application. If only one program shows the message, that program may be calling the Windows network-properties component incorrectly or may have a separate dependency problem.
Fix 1: Update Windows and restart
Start with Windows Update because incomplete servicing can leave protected Windows files inconsistent.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Retry the action that triggered the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install pending updates and restart.
If Windows Update fails, run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and continue with DISM and SFC below.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a missing, corrupted, or incorrectly serviced ncdprop.dll. These commands restore Windows files from the component store rather than copying an unknown DLL into a system folder.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
Run System File Checker
When DISM completes, enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test again.
A result saying that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them is a good sign. A result saying that it found no integrity violations means SFC did not find damaged protected files, so the error may involve a dependency, driver, or application.
If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time. If DISM itself cannot repair the image, use a matching Windows installation or repair source as described in Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed becomes guesswork. You can check the normal Windows directories without downloading anything.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%windir%System32. - Press Enter.
- Search for
NcdProp.dll. - Repeat with
%windir%SysWOW64if you use 64-bit Windows.
Do not copy the file between these folders. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows uses the 32-bit system environment, while 64-bit Windows components use the 64-bit environment. Microsoft explains these compatibility boundaries in its 32-bit application guidance.
The exact version depends on the Windows release and servicing level. Do not replace a file merely because its version differs from one found on another computer.

If the file exists but the error remains, the problem may be a missing dependency. “The specified module could not be found” does not conclusively identify ncdprop.dll as the missing module.

Use this route when the error occurs while opening Network Connections, viewing an adapter’s properties, or changing advanced adapter settings. It is also appropriate if the problem began immediately after a network-driver update or hardware change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If that does not help:
- Return to Device Manager > Network adapters.
- Right-click the adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package only when you have a replacement driver available from the computer or adapter manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver supplied for your exact computer or adapter model.
- Run DISM and SFC again if Windows components also appear damaged.
Reinstalling the driver will not restore the Windows DLL in every case. ncdprop.dll supports the Windows network-device properties interface, while the adapter driver is supplied for the hardware.
Manually identifying the correct driver among several revisions is easy to get wrong. Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
NcdProp.dll.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only if you can verify that it is the genuine Microsoft-signed Windows file and the detection is demonstrably a false positive. Otherwise, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains how these events are recorded. Older events may no longer be visible because Protection History is retained for a limited period.
Fix 6: Reinstall the network application only if the evidence points there
If DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and the driver repair all succeed but one application still reports ncdprop.dll, inspect that application rather than replacing the Windows DLL.

Try these steps:
- Note the complete error message and the program name.
- Update the program from its official developer source.
- Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, Repair, or Modify if available.
- If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official installer.
- Test again after restarting.
The application may be using an incorrect private copy or reporting a dependency failure. Do not place a downloaded DLL beside the program executable. Windows can load an unintended or malicious copy from an application directory, as explained in Microsoft’s DLL search-order documentation.

Do not register ncdprop.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is used for DLLs that expose the registration entry point required by that utility. Public file analysis does not establish that NcdProp.dll provides the required DllRegisterServer entry point.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a routine fix:
regsvr32 NcdProp.dll
regsvr32 %windir%System32NcdProp.dll
If Windows reports that the entry point is missing, that does not mean you found the cause. Repair the Windows component store and protected files instead.

If the error began after a recent update, consider rolling back that change:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update > Update history.
- Select Uninstall updates.
- Remove only a recently installed update that matches the timing of the failure.
- Restart and test.
You can also use System Restore if restore points are available. Microsoft lists these choices in its Windows recovery options.
On Windows 11, try the built-in repair reinstall:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings, subject to Microsoft’s availability requirements. If that option is absent, use a matching Windows installation source for an in-place repair installation after backing up important data.

Repeated repair failures can indicate storage problems or wider installation corruption. Back up your files, review DISM and CBS logs, and check storage health before attempting more repairs.
