What this file actually does
ndishc.dll is described as NDIS Helper Classes. It belongs to Windows networking diagnostics and is associated with the Network Diagnostics Framework, which Microsoft ships as part of Windows.
The file helps Windows and supported networking components diagnose and repair connection problems. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET package. Installing one of those packages specifically for ndishc.dll is unlikely to help.
On a typical installation, the file is located here:

- 64-bit Windows:
%windir%System32ndishc.dll - 32-bit Windows components used by 32-bit processes on 64-bit Windows: normally
%windir%SysWOW64ndishc.dll
The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit processes through Windows file-system redirection. Do not use the folder name alone to decide which DLL to copy.
Historical file records show different versions and sizes for different Windows releases. Those values can change through Windows servicing, so a version number found online is not a universal target.
Causes grouped by symptom
| Symptom | Most likely explanation | Correct next step |
|---|---|---|
| Windows reports the file is missing during several programs | A damaged or missing Windows component | Run Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| One application triggers the error | The application may have damaged files or a dependency problem | Repair or reinstall the application after repairing Windows |
| The problem began after a driver or Windows update | Interrupted servicing or networking damage | Run DISM/SFC, then use System Restore or reinstall the network driver |
| Microsoft Defender lists the file in Protection history | The file may have been quarantined, or the detection may need investigation | Verify the location and Microsoft signature before restoring |
The specified module could not be found appears while the file exists |
A dependency may be missing, not necessarily ndishc.dll itself |
Repair Windows and investigate the calling program |
| The file keeps disappearing | Malware, disk corruption, or an unstable Windows installation is possible | Run a full Defender scan and check storage health |
Fix ndishc.dll errors in order
1. Install Windows updates and restart
Windows servicing is the safest way to restore a missing or damaged system DLL.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
- Try the program again.
Microsoft’s instructions for installing updates are available on its Windows Update support page.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. An update can supply the correct Windows component, but it may not repair a component store that is already corrupted.
2. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Run them in this order.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- After DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program again.
A successful DISM run means the component store repair completed. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found files it could not repair.

- Supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14
Microsoft explains this sequence in Using System File Checker in Windows.
Manually repeating DISM and SFC can be tedious when you do not know which component changed or whether the repair actually addressed the problem. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the primary repair path.
If DISM fails because it cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, do not download ndishc.dll from a DLL site. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation as a /Source; that source must match the installed operating-system version. See Microsoft’s guidance for fixing Windows Update corruptions.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them:
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - If the same result returns, inspect the CBS log for the affected component.
- If the problem began after a recent system change, continue to System Restore below.
3. Check whether Microsoft Defender quarantined the file
Antivirus quarantine is a possible cause, but restoring a file without verifying it can create a security problem.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for a file named
ndishc.dll. - Open the detection details and note the file path.
- Restore it only if the file was in the expected Windows directory and you can verify that it is a genuine Microsoft-signed file.
To inspect a file manually:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar, or check%windir%SysWOW64when investigating a 32-bit process. - Right-click
ndishc.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
A copy in a downloads folder, temporary folder, application directory, or an unfamiliar path deserves additional investigation. Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the device. Follow Microsoft’s Protection History guidance before restoring anything.
After restoring a legitimate quarantined file, run DISM and SFC anyway. Quarantine restoration does not repair other damaged Windows components.
4. Repair or reinstall the affected application
A Windows DLL can be requested when launching another program because that program loads Windows networking or diagnostic components. The application may not own ndishc.dll.

- Close the application.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the program and test it.
If there is no Repair option:
- Download the application’s installer from its official publisher.
- Back up any application data or saved settings.
- Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current version from the official installer.
- Test the program before adding plugins or modifications.
For a game, use its launcher’s Verify or Repair game files function. That can repair the game’s own files, but it cannot repair Windows’ copy of ndishc.dll, so run DISM and SFC separately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If reinstalling the application does not help, check whether its error message names another missing dependency. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency of ndishc.dll, not necessarily to the named file itself.
5. Update or reinstall the network adapter
Use this step when the problem started after a network driver change, when networking is also malfunctioning, or when Windows reports damaged networking components.
First try updating the driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If updating does not help, reinstall it:
- Open Device Manager again.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Allow Windows to redetect the adapter.
If Windows does not restore a working driver, download the replacement only from the computer manufacturer or network-adapter manufacturer. Avoid driver packages from unrelated download sites.
Driver hunting is often the slow part because several adapters and driver versions may be listed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the manufacturer’s official driver remains the safest source.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not uninstall a network adapter unless you have a way to regain network access, such as another connection or the manufacturer’s driver already saved locally.
6. Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate if the error appeared immediately after a driver, Windows update, or software installation and a restore point exists.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the list.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back selected system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal files, but it can remove applications or drivers installed after the restore point. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore support guide.

Do not download or register ndishc.dll manually
Do not download ndishc.dll from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. The file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, come from the wrong Windows build, or be tampered with. Even a genuine file copied from another release may not match the current component store.
Do not overwrite a newer Windows DLL with an older one. Windows Update, DISM, and SFC are designed to restore the correct component for the installed system.
regsvr32 is also not a general missing-DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose a registration interface; it does not restore a missing file, repair a corrupted component, or supply missing dependencies. Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference, but it does not prescribe regsvr32 ndishc.dll as a repair for this error.
There is no Windows Features checkbox that normally needs to be enabled to restore ndishc.dll. Treat it as a Windows component and repair Windows itself.

If ndishc.dll exists and is Microsoft-signed but the application still fails:
- Note the complete error message.
- Check whether only one application is affected.
- Repair or reinstall that application.
- Look for a second missing module named in the error.
- Confirm that the application and its dependencies match the process architecture.
- Check file permissions and the application’s installation directory.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
- Review disk health if system files repeatedly become damaged or disappear.
If several Windows components fail, DISM cannot repair the image, or the error returns after every restart, use a matching repair source or Windows’ supported recovery options rather than replacing individual DLLs.

FAQ
Is ndishc.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is identified as NDIS Helper Classes, a Microsoft Windows networking diagnostics component associated with the Network Diagnostics Framework.
Where should ndishc.dll be?
On 64-bit Windows, check %windir%System32ndishc.dll. A 32-bit process on 64-bit Windows normally uses the redirected %windir%SysWOW64 location. The exact component layout depends on the Windows architecture and installation.
Why does a game or application ask for a Windows DLL?
Applications can call Windows networking and diagnostic components. The application may trigger the error without owning the DLL, so reinstalling it alone may not repair Windows.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
No special Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET package is indicated for restoring ndishc.dll. Repair Windows first.
Should I run regsvr32 ndishc.dll?
No. It is not a general solution for a missing or corrupted Windows system DLL. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
What if SFC cannot repair the file?
Restart, run DISM again, and rerun SFC. If it still fails, inspect the CBS log, use a matching DISM repair source, or move to System Restore and supported Windows recovery options.
Is a copy outside the Windows directory malware?
Not automatically, but it is suspicious. Verify the file’s location and Microsoft digital signature before restoring or executing it. Never trust a DLL merely because its filename matches.
