No—the latest official Steam data does not show 42% of Steam users running Windows 10. Valve’s July 2026 survey puts Windows 10 64-bit at 23.30% of participating Steam systems in its combined view, or 24.88% in the narrower Windows/DirectX table. That is roughly one in four surveyed systems, not two in five.
What the July 2026 Steam numbers actually say
Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey is monthly, optional and anonymous. It reports configurations observed among participating Steam customers; it is not a census of every account or a count of unique people. One person can use Steam on several PCs, and several people can share one PC.

The second Windows 10 figure comes from Valve’s Windows and DirectX detail table, whose denominator is limited to the systems represented there. It should not be casually substituted for the combined-platform percentage. “Steam users,” “Steam PCs,” and “Windows Steam systems” describe different populations.
Why the “42%” claim is misleading
The latest official July 2026 figures support neither 42% overall nor 42% of Windows systems. A 42% number could be an older month, a different denominator, a rounding error or an unverified calculation. Without the survey month and population, it is not a defensible current statistic.

If you restrict the overview to Windows systems, Windows 10’s 23.30% combined share works out to approximately 24.9% of Windows systems, depending on how categories are treated. That is consistent with, but not identical to, the 24.88% Windows/DirectX table.
Windows 10 is declining, but not disappearing
In Valve’s detailed Windows table, Windows 10 64-bit accounted for 27.03% in March 2026, 27.16% in April, 25.57% in May, 25.04% in June and 24.88% in July. That is a 2.15-percentage-point decline from March to July, while Windows 11 rose from 71.26% to 75.01% over the same entries.

Monthly survey results can move because of sample variation as well as actual upgrades. The sensible reading is a broad shift toward Windows 11, with a substantial Windows 10 installed base still active.
Windows 10 support ended—but the operating system still works
Microsoft ended normal Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Ordinary installations no longer receive free Windows Update security fixes, quality updates or Microsoft technical support. Microsoft says PCs continue to function after that date; “out of support” does not mean “will not boot,” and it does not mean Steam or every existing game stops launching on the same day. The main immediate risk is security. Over time, unsupported systems can also lose compatibility with new applications, launchers, anti-cheat components, drivers and peripherals. Vendors may test new releases primarily on supported Windows versions, making troubleshooting harder for Windows 10 users.
Steam’s 32-bit cutoff is a separate issue
Steam stopped supporting 32-bit Windows systems on January 1, 2026, according to Steam Support. Windows 10 32-bit was the remaining supported 32-bit Windows edition and represented about 0.01% of systems in the cited survey. This policy does not mean Steam abandoned Windows 10 64-bit: that category still represented 23.30% of all surveyed systems in July.

Why many gaming PCs remain on Windows 10
Valve’s survey records configurations, not users’ reasons. Several explanations are plausible, and hardware eligibility is the clearest measurable constraint.
Older hardware may fail Windows 11 checks
Microsoft requires a compatible 64-bit processor, at least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, and DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver. The full requirements are listed by Microsoft at Windows 11 requirements. A PC that still runs a user’s games well may nevertheless lack a supported CPU or firmware configuration.

Upgrade friction is real
Players may postpone an operating-system change because of driver updates, mods, anti-cheat, specialist peripherals, older games, interface preferences or the time needed to reinstall and test a stable setup. The survey cannot establish which motive applies to any particular user.
What should a Windows 10 Steam player do?
If the PC is eligible
- Back up game saves, documents and any authentication or recovery data.
- Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check and review the reason for the eligibility result.
- Check graphics, chipset, audio, controller and peripheral software for Windows 11 support.
- Confirm that must-play games, mods and anti-cheat systems have no known Windows 11 issue.
- Use Windows Update or Microsoft’s supported upgrade process, then launch essential games and tools after rebooting.

If eligibility fails because of firmware settings
Some systems have a supported processor but TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot disabled, or are configured for legacy BIOS instead of UEFI. Consult the motherboard or system manufacturer’s documentation before changing firmware, and keep a current backup. Do not assume every “unsupported” result can be fixed this way.

- Stay temporarily on Windows 10: workable for a stable library, but with no ordinary free security updates and increasing future compatibility risk.
- Use Extended Security Updates: Microsoft documents ESU as a temporary security bridge; current consumer pricing and enrollment conditions are not established here. See the Windows lifecycle FAQ.
- Replace the PC: sensible when the machine is old, failing or already a poor gaming performer. Compare CPU, GPU, memory, storage and warranty—not just the Windows version.
- Consider Linux: Linux represented 4.01% of surveyed systems in July 2026, and SteamOS Holo 0.89%. Compatibility remains game-specific: kernel-level anti-cheat, launchers, DRM, mod tools, hardware utilities and Proton versions can all be decisive.
Unsupported Windows 11 installation methods are not equivalent to a supported upgrade and can create update, driver and troubleshooting problems.
Bottom line for Steam gamers
Windows 10 remains common on Steam, but the current defensible figure is about one-quarter of surveyed systems: 23.30% in Valve’s combined July 2026 view or 24.88% in its Windows/DirectX detail view. The important change is not an instant Steam shutdown. It is that Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025, so security exposure and future software compatibility now make a supported upgrade, a temporary ESU bridge, replacement hardware or a carefully checked Linux move increasingly relevant.
