“netadaptercim.dll is missing,” “netadaptercim.dll was not found,” and “netadaptercim.dll could not be loaded” usually indicate a damaged Windows component, not a missing game file. netadaptercim.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows WMI provider, so repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The 60-second answer
netadaptercim.dll implements the Windows NetAdapterCim provider. It exposes network-adapter information through WMI and CIM, including the MSFT_NetAdapter class used by PowerShell and Windows management software.
The normal location is:
%windir%System32wbemNetAdapterCim.dll
The safest repair sequence is:
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM.
- Run System File Checker.
- Restart and test the provider.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Do not download netadaptercim.dll from a DLL download site, copy it into an application folder, or run regsvr32 as a first response.
What netadaptercim.dll does
Microsoft identifies netadaptercim.dll as the implementation of the NetAdapterCim WMI provider defined by NetAdapterCim.mof. The provider supplies network-adapter classes such as:

The documented namespace is RootStandardCimv2. You can query the main adapter class with PowerShell:
Get-CimInstance -Namespace RootStandardCimv2 -ClassName MSFT_NetAdapter
Microsoft documents this provider for client versions beginning with Windows 8 and server versions beginning with Windows Server 2012. It is therefore part of Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations that include the relevant provider.
This file is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or ordinary network-card driver. It is a Windows management component. A physical network adapter driver may cause separate hardware problems, but reinstalling that driver does not normally restore this DLL.
Where the file should be
The expected path is:
C:WindowsSystem32wbemNetAdapterCim.dll
%windir% may point to a different Windows directory, so use the environment-variable form when checking from PowerShell.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Run:
Test-Path "$env:windirSystem32wbemNetAdapterCim.dll"
A result of True means the file exists at the standard path. It does not prove that the file is correct, signed, or properly registered.
To check its Authenticode signature:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32wbemNetAdapterCim.dll"
Look for a valid signature from Microsoft. A valid signature is useful evidence, but it does not prove that the file matches the installed Windows build or that WMI registration is healthy. Do not replace a 64-bit installation with an old 32-bit file simply because the filename matches. Historical listings for this DLL include a 32-bit Windows 8-era build, but that is not a universal version for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
What the error message means
“Missing” or “was not found”
Windows or an application attempted to load the provider and could not find the expected file. The cause may be component corruption, a failed update, antivirus quarantine, or an incorrect path.
“Could not be loaded” or “module was not found”
The named DLL may exist, but Windows may be unable to load it because the file is damaged, incompatible, incorrectly replaced, or missing a dependency. The message does not always identify the true failing component.

- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “bad image”
These are generic Windows loader categories. They commonly point to an incompatible architecture, a damaged binary, or a file from a different Windows build. They do not establish that a particular game or application is responsible.
“Entry point not found”
The program found a DLL but requested a function that the loaded version does not provide. A mismatched or manually copied DLL is a common possibility.
The program shown in the message may only be reporting a Windows dependency failure. If Windows networking and the CIM query work normally, repair or reinstall the specific application that displays the message after checking Windows itself.
Fix 1: Update Windows, then run DISM and SFC
This is the correct first repair for a missing or corrupted Windows provider.
Install pending updates
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it either found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. Test the provider:
Get-CimInstance -Namespace RootStandardCimv2 -ClassName MSFT_NetAdapter
If the command returns adapter information, the provider is working. If it returns an error, continue with the later sections rather than copying a DLL manually.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows folders and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC remain the primary repair path.

- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the WMI directory or
NetAdapterCim.dll.
Do not restore a file merely because its filename is correct. If the detected file is unsigned, came from an unexpected location, or was manually downloaded, leave it quarantined and run a full or offline security scan.
If Defender quarantined the original Windows component and you have confirmed its origin, use the available restore action, then immediately run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains the available quarantine actions. Do not disable antivirus protection to download a replacement DLL.

Fix 3: Repair a damaged WMI registration
Use this path when the DLL exists, but the MSFT_NetAdapter class cannot be queried.
First check both provider files:
Test-Path "$env:windirSystem32wbemNetAdapterCim.dll"
Test-Path "$env:windirSystem32wbemNetAdapterCim.mof"
If both return True, run DISM and SFC first. Restart and test again:
Get-CimInstance -Namespace RootStandardCimv2 -ClassName MSFT_NetAdapter
Only if the provider remains unregistered should you consider recompiling the matching MOF file. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
mofcomp %windir%System32wbemNetAdapterCim.mof
Restart Windows and repeat the CIM query.
mofcomp changes WMI registration. It is an advanced repair for a demonstrably damaged provider registration, not a universal fix for every missing-DLL message. If the MOF file is absent, do not download one separately. Return to DISM, SFC, or a matching Windows repair source.
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not use this as a general fix:
regsvr32 NetAdapterCim.dll
Some DLLs require manual COM registration, but a Windows WMI provider is registered through WMI, provider, and MOF mechanisms. Microsoft’s DLL registration guidance does not make regsvr32 appropriate for every Windows DLL.

For netadaptercim.dll, use DISM and SFC first. If the file exists but its WMI classes are missing, investigate the paired MOF registration instead.
Fix 4: Address a network-adapter driver problem only when symptoms support it
A driver reinstall is relevant when Device Manager shows a warning icon, the adapter disappears, Wi-Fi or Ethernet fails, or Windows reports a hardware driver error. It is not the normal repair for a missing WMI provider DLL.
To reinstall an adapter:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the uninstall. Avoid removing driver software unless you have the correct replacement available.
- Select Action.
- Select Scan for hardware changes.
- Install the driver supplied by the computer or adapter manufacturer if Windows does not restore it.
Prefer the manufacturer’s package and match the architecture required by the machine. A driver update cannot substitute for Windows component repair.
Manually identifying which of many network drivers is stale can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and it will not replace the need to repair Windows when the provider itself is damaged.
If DISM cannot repair the file
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found:
- Use a genuine Windows installation or repair source matching the installed edition, language, architecture, and build.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run a command using the correct source path:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual matching source. Microsoft documents this process in its Repair a Windows image guidance.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some, review:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Do not extract a replacement from a random computer. If the file is absent but SFC reports no violations, the installation may have a pending servicing transaction or a different component state. Review DISM and CBS logs instead of copying a DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRecovery options when repair still fails
If the problem began immediately after a driver or software installation, use System Restore:
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Review affected programs and complete the restoration.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files. Review Microsoft’s System Restore guidance before proceeding.

On Windows 11, try the repair reinstall:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This option is designed to preserve apps, files, and settings. If Windows cannot boot, use Windows Recovery Environment and consider Startup Repair, System Restore, or matching installation media. Microsoft lists these choices in its Windows recovery options.
A full reinstall should be the last resort after backing up data and confirming that less destructive recovery options cannot restore Windows.
Avoid unsafe DLL fixes
Do not:
- Download
netadaptercim.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Copy it into a game or application folder.
- Replace a 64-bit file with an old 32-bit build.
- Rename or delete files in
System32wbem. - Disable antivirus protection to obtain the file.
- Assume a valid signature proves the file matches your Windows build.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component servicing, a matching Windows repair source, or official Windows installation media.
FAQ
Is netadaptercim.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It implements Microsoft’s Windows NetAdapterCim WMI provider.
Is it installed by a network-card driver?
No. The provider reports network-adapter information, but it is a Windows management component rather than the vendor’s physical adapter driver.
Is there a Visual C++ or .NET package that installs it?
No standalone redistributable is identified for this file. Repair Windows through DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or matching installation media.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShould I run regsvr32?
Not as a general repair. Investigate WMI and the paired NetAdapterCim.mof file instead.
Why does an application report the error?
The application may be the process that triggered Windows to load the provider, not the owner of the DLL. If CIM queries work after Windows repair, repair or reinstall the application that still reports the error.
How do I know the repair worked?
Confirm that the file exists, check its Microsoft signature, and run:
Get-CimInstance -Namespace RootStandardCimv2 -ClassName MSFT_NetAdapter
A successful result shows that the provider is available to WMI and CIM.
